Pirate is a perfectly good colour. Not only does it tie into Krawk Island, but it's also unique, with each pet commonly having red, yellow, or gray clothing with spots and stripes, plus the usual pirate accessories like bandanas and gold jewelry.

You would think customization would make it irrelevant, but it's saved by having a specific base color (usually a slate or dull grayish-blue) that's unique to pirate pets. On top of this, many pirate pets also have skull-and-crossbone markings or scars, which further makes the bases different enough even without clothing.

Really, the biggest problem with pirate is just that a lot of pirate pets were released early on. Not only did they not get unique poses like some later pets, but the designs just tended to be very simple. This isn't inherently bad—many colours nowadays feel too busy and complex for their own good—but some pets feel pretty underbaked in hindsight.

While there are exceptions (see the pirate Xweetok below), pirate pets usually went through customization alright, seeing as most of the colour is clothing. The biggest problems tended to be either loss of important elements that didn't work with custimzation, such as peg legs, or just plain inaccuracy when converting. For example, the pirate Zafara above lost its darker accents on its front fur, spines, and tail tip. There are also pet styles (both nostalgic and dynamic) for many pets.

Favorite Species:

Xweetok: The pirate Xweetok blows most other pets out of the water. Instead of being stuck with the standard pose pre-customization like most other pets, it got completely new art and really took advantage of it, not only giving it a unique pose but also making tweaks like making the tail fur more angled, giving it extra fluff and a bear, etc., along with an amazing expression.

The converted version is fine, but it's a bit more standard for the color, and it completely lost its pet leg. The far eye is also missing an eyebrow for some reason. Thankfully, the old art is now available as a pet style.

Lutari: The pirate Lutari was released after customization so no cool poses, but it does have a great design regardless. The clothing looks appropriately pirate-y and it makes good use of what's mostly a three-color palette (red, grayish blue, and slightly off-white). However, what really makes the design is the integration of a skull into the tail markings, which is incredibly clever. It also has a great base as well. My only nitpick is that the eyes probably should've been yellow to match its yellow earring.

Krawk: The pirate Krawk is incredibly simple and honestly there's nothing that unique about it, but it just works well. The gray-and-black shirt and bandana add some nice patterning, the hook hand pops, and pirate just works well on the species native to pirate land. It also received a really good pet style that gives it a ton of personality (though it does retain the white shirt it had pre-customization; personally, I would've preferred it to keep the gray for coherency's sake).

Least Favorite Species:

Techo: There really aren't any horrible pirate pets, as the worst ones tend to just be mid, but the pirate Techo is definitely mid. All it had originally was a hat, bandana, and peg leg—and it lost the peg leg in customization. Even ignoring how few elements there are to the design, none of them are particularly coherent, and the red-on-slate effect the head spots have is downright eye-searing.

It’s been awhile, hasn’t it?

I had not only massive art block and burnout but Neopets burnout as well. The site is doing everything to just piss me off. From the constant ads, the shit about premium, ncmall species wearables. Urgh. But I have friends on the site and I love my pets. Getting a laptop soon for school, so maybe I’ll finally be able to get an ad blocker and play the site.

Still haven’t drawn much but I realized I never posted this art. This is of my gay old tansman Zafara, Herbert. I few other pieces I had already drawn that I’ll post and maybe try to doodle some sketches to get back into the swing of things.

The grindy nature of different aspects + the incredible slog of the comic pacing were a pain for sure but M8 i have MISSED having those little tasks to do every day!!! and i really missed the battledome challengers, i never even DID the battledome b4 the plot started up and now i'm fully suckered in

Good news is that the Aug 4th date for the plot return is a lot more set in stone but also bring down any expectations on gameplay changes. The guild challenge sounds fun though
