I found blogging through the decades very interesting as you can clearly see how much fashion has changed, I used primary and secondary research in the decades although secondary research I put into my own words. Not only has fashion changed but so has people’s lifestyles as you can see from the beginning to now that women now have their own life and are more independent. I also found out that now women aren't afraid to show of more of their body without men looking as if it's unusual for them to do so and finally men's fashion during this blog took little steps as only one thing would normally change in one era but looking from 1900 to 2000 it has changed a lot as men used to dress smartly and looked very posh and now they are more casual looking. I enjoyed making this blog and I think the information that I have learnt will be very useful to me in the future.

1990′s Fashion

Primary research^
The main trend was all generally loose fitting clothes and colourful unless going for a grunge look which was extremely popular in this era, flannel shirts were always seen worn by teens in thrift shops as well as baseball caps. The fashion was quite minumalistic as t-shirts were big and shorts were extra long, tapered pants were very popular, sweaters were worn with a turtleneck. Anticonformist approached fashion which lead to a casual which look that included skirts, jeans, hoodies and sneaker which continued into the 2000′s. Popular garments were black leggings with oversized sweater, low heeled shoes, flannel shirts, denim everything, t shirts, skirts, solid colours, silk shirts and turtlenecks. Sports bras, hoodies and leotards worn as tops with jeans were popular with young girls, common outfits wearing a skirt, dress shorts, babydoll or mini dress with black opaque tights white athletic socks.
Fashion trends from the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s recycled into the 90′s. Early 1990′s continued from late 1980′s fashion which was bold, geometric print clothing. Some of these recycled clothing included disco themes from the 70′s which was pleather parts, halter tops, metallic clothing, crop tops, tube tops, maxi coats maxi skirts and knee boots.
In this era internet availability increased which allowed it to be more globalised so more people were getting inspired by fashion, Kate Moss modelled for Calvin Klien which created controversy with her very thin figure. Many people critized er for allegedly promoting eating disorders in her photos. Graffiti became very popular in 1990′s but it was discovered in 1970′s in America. Banksy was a very popular artist in 90′s although he started art earlier, one of the main reasons why he is so popular is because no one knows his real identity.
Women’s hair in the early 90′s continued off the late 80′s as big and curly, as the 90′s grew the pixie cut and Rachel hairstyle became popular which was based on Marlo Thomas in That Girl and Jennifer Aniston in Friends. Around this time red hair was also a very popular colour for women as well as feathered bangs and mini hair buns. The bob cut was well desired and came back by Victoria Beckham which was featured either at a centre, side or zig-zag parting.
Fashion remained very stylish among both sexes, the popularity of grunge and alternative rock music helped fashion to be simple into 1994. Continuing from the late 80′s men wore high waisted jeans with a matching denim jacket. Stop island and Ralph Lauren were very popular as weak as V neck sweaters and graphic print sweaters. Gauge was also very popular for mens wear also, flannel shirts were popular because of grunge bands like Nirvana, Mudhoney and Pearl Jam. Fashionable accessories were converse hats, doc martens, avitor sunglasses popularised by Freddie Mercury.

1960′s Fashion

1960′s fashion was extreme styles, there was a lot of pop and color that was inspired by pop art and modern art movements. Checkerboard, stripes and polka dot and Campbell’s soup cans were all placed on short shift dresses. Fashion was over the top but never too much but eventually pop settled down into soft pastels and went for a more ‘girly’ appeal.
In the 1960′s women’s confidence was shown by the length of there skirts or dresses. Short skirts were not meant to attract men for there sexual interest but it was a way to show there confidence and for women to decide if his attention was wanted, women had sexual power through fashion.
Now that legs are more exposed by short hemlines and the young girl look, shoes changed a lot. Materials like PVC made shoes cheaper to make, flat shoes were also very popular in the 60′s as they were easy to walk in, even boots had a low heel. There wasn’t many hats that were in fashion for women in the 60′s so hairstyles became the new focus for women, hair at the start of the era was short, curly and had lots of volume although as time went on and getting into the 70′s hair became to be long and straight.
The 1950′s dress continued into the early 1960′s with a full skirt and a tight bodice. The 1950′s pencil skirt didn’t last long in the 1960′s and was turned into a shapeless shift dress in 1963, shift dresses were for casual wear at home and ideal for running errands, they weren’t worn for the office as they were to short. 1960′s dresses became shorter and anything that was above the knee was seen as a mini skirt.
There as many fashion icons in the 1960′s and in the middle of the decade the model Twiggy influenced women to free their minds into clothes that didn’t require any extra thought. Fashion icon Jackie Kennedy wore dresses without collars and jackets with only one button at the top with low heels, lots of women in the USA and abroad was influenced by her style. Brigette Bardot was the opposite to Jackie, Brigette was tacky, cheap, bold and silly. Her 1959 pink gingham adding dress with a white lac trim was unexpected although gingham and lace became a new trend. Mary Qaunt is the final 1960′s fashion icon that I’m going to talk about, her styles wasn't “grown up fashion” but it was “youthful fashion”. Her designs fir shift dresses were short sonf her mod prints were colorful and bold and her fashion carried on through 1960.
There wasn’t much change between the late 50′s and early 60′s for men’s fashion, although one noticeable change was that men’s trousers became tighter. The Beatles were a big influence on men’s fashion in the 60′s as hair was longer and trousers were tighter.

1950′s Fashion

Primary research^
In the 1950′s the had glamours shapes, colorful prints and always exaggerated with voluminous skirts and small waists. There was two main 50′s silhouettes which were the wasp waistband full skirt and a slim firing pencil skirt. In the middle of the 1950′s decade that gap between adult clothing and children clothing was filled with teenage clothing, this was when teenagers became to wear more fashionable clothes as there was now a range for them.
Petticoats and full skirts: Wide skirts were worn with layers of petticoats to give more life and the wore them n the day and evening. They were down to their mid-calf and petticoats were worn with many layers of net.
Pencil skirts: A narrow, tight fit straight skirt which were also called a ‘hobble’ skirt as it restricted women to walk properly creating the wiggle look. They were worn by all ages giving a more sophisticated look for mature looks worn with heels and accessories.
Sweater girl: This was a tight sweater with the looks aim to show a thrusting conical shaped bust and was worn with a bullet bra.
Many people felt more freedom when i came to fashion, people didn't feel like they had to change to a certain look for certain situations, the 1950′s era didn't matter if yo had curves as you could style them in with the clothes that was also in. People were happy in the 50′s although this was also the era for people to get back on their feet after rationing, but towards the end of the 1950′s nearly every household had a TV and they were getting disposable incomes which could have possible been from more women working at this time, disposable income now meant that more people were going on holidays.
World war 2 had ended meaning more men were sent back to work so now there was more housewives and baby booms. Catalogs showed certain clothing items that would pleas their husbands or help them to find a husband, it also said in men’s clothing description that its likely women were purchasing clothes for their husbands. Men’s clothes hadn't changed much through the decade and choices were suits, sport coats, slacks, sweaters or casual wear, work clothing for laborers was usually in the style of the military because the majority of the men at he time served in the armed forces or were still a part of the military.

1940's Fashion

1940's was the start of the second world war and because of this every women's garment had shoulder pads to make it look more masculine militant making a boxy square neckline, but evening dresses had spaghetti straps or halter tops with revealing shoulders and chests. More colorful fabric was worn to try and brighten up the depressing moods of the war.
Although women wore more masculine clothes whist the second world war was happening, after world war 2 in 1947 women started to wear more feminine clothes and the 'new look' replaced the clothes women was wearing whilst in war. This style was more feminine with rounded shoulders, close waist lines and full blowing skirts that hung just below the calves.
As this era was the era with would war 2 fabric rations limited cloth to make suits also making the suits different, suit pockets couldn't have flaps, trousers couldn't be more than 19 inches around or be cuffed and they were sold without waistcoats. The war has influenced men's fashion, the war brag casualness because they didn't like the unfinished suits so they were able to wear casual clothes and there was no strict codes because people couldn't afford it.
In the 1940's plus size fashion was invented and catalogs now had 'Stout' size clothing lines, the two piece bikini was invented in 1946 but they were too revealing for women's taste. Women now liked tailored suits and they were also now educated hoe to change material and update clothes into the newest fashion.

1930′s Fashion

Fashion for the 1920's with a more comfort look and low waists had gone by 1933 and this was replaced with a more fitted look with a longer floor length hemline, high neckline and wide shoulders. Women always had to dress smart no matter how much money they had, the perfect thirties women was tall with a tiny waist and small hips, but women were not like this so shoulders had puff sleeves, shoulder pads, full collars and caplet or butterfly or ruffled cap sleeves, this would make women's hips and waists look smaller as their shoulders would be seen as bigger.
Women started to wear factory made garments rather than made to order custom garments because they were cheaper this way, zippers were invented in this era as they were cheaper than buttons, also bra cup sizing was introduced fashion was glamorous as the 1920's and makeup was chic although hats were gradually becoming less popular.
Fur was in and so was floral patterns, knitted garments were becoming more and more popular in the 1930's and started to have full outfits from knit wear when it used to just be under wear and undergarments, women also liked knit wear because they could make it at home so this became the biggest leisure activity in this era, knit wear patterns were selling out of shops fast.
Knit wear for men was also in as sweaters were worn more by lower class, knitted double breasted sweaters with V necks, no collar and four buttons were given as a classic style. More V shapes appeared on men's topcoats and suits. Men's trousers spread further up the waist and the hems were cuffed giving a more casual look.

In the 1920’s the modern era entered, Women stopped wearing clothes that restricted them and began to wear clothes with a bit more comfort. Tubular dresses in the 1920’s had shorter skirts with pleats, gathers or slits which was able to give them more movement, the new dance which came in the 1920’s called the Charleston made women wear low-waisted dresses with big hemlines so it was easier for them to dance in.
The 1920’s was the year that American women were given the right to vote, this gave women more freedom. Fashion was influenced by the new art Surrealism, as after World War 1 art moved away from abstractions of pure decoration to forms of art deco.
Women in the 1920’s normally had three different outfits for one day depending on their wealth, firstly they would wear their Morning dress, housewife’s wore a cotton dress and low heels, for the poor this would be their only outfit for the day, they had to do the chores such as vacuuming, ironing and washing. Once they were done with the chores they’d put on their Street wear to run errands for your husband at work and they’d be wearing a walking suit which was a skirt, a blouse and a sweater paired with firm mid heels. The outfit would be black, navy, tan and olive green. Lastly their final outfit was called Afternoon tea and this was a simple Tea dress with shoes and accessories were more over the top.
This was the era for Cloche hats as they became the hat every women would hair with short hair tucked underneath, in 1925 the Shift dress emerged which had no waist line and dresses were being worn with straight bodices and collars.
For the first time men wore athletic clothes and became less formal, they preferred short jackets rather to long Tailcoats. The suits men wear today were based on the ones that men wore wore in the late 1920’s. By 1925 men’s trousers became more wider called Oxford bags. Men’s hats were worn depending on their class, upper class would wear top hats or a Hamburg hat, middle class wore a Fedora, a Bowler hat or a Trilby hat.

1900′s Fashion

Fashion in the 1900′s was very formal, the Victorian era came to an end and all the women wore long dresses down to the floor with tall and stiff collars, broad hats and Gibson girl hairstyles. The skirts silhouette was slim at the hip and any fullness in the skirt was to below the knee. For day, ladies wore very high necks and the bosom was undefined with fullness.
In 1900, the hourglass figure was in. The fashion houses in Paris presented a new silhouette with thicker waist, flatter bust and narrower hips. The skirts were rounded but the fabrics are soft meaning they could drape, the were also full.
Women's clothing during the early 1900′s was characterized by the S-shaped figure. The constrictive corset of the decade was designed in 1900 by Mme. Gaches-Sarraute, who studied medicine and recognized the ill-effects of the 19th century corsets. Her new "Health Corset" removed pressure from the waist and diaphragm but resulted in thrusting the bosom forward and the hips back. Women walked around with long, heavy, frilled skirts and puffy, lacy blouses. In 1908, women threw off much of the frill and lace from their clothes and embraced the "New Woman" look with tailored suits and tailored blouses and skirts. The S-shaped corset was still worn.
Cycling was still a popular activity for women during the early 1900′s. Blouses and skirts, still worn over tightly corseted figures, were worn for leisurely bike trips. Tailored clothes were worn for outdoor activities and traveling. The shirtwaist, a garment with a bodice tailored like a man's shirt with a high collar, was from a informal day wear and became the uniform for a working women. Wool or tweed suit called tailor-mades or tailleurs with ankle-length skirts with matching jackets; women of fashion wore them with animal furs and big hats. Two new styles of head wear that became popular at the end of the century were the motoring veil for driving and sailor hats worn for tennis matches, bicycling and croquet.
