Advertisements often make the mistake of portraying non-white women in what they believe to be their natural habit. Black women are deliberately placed in animal print or next to animals to allude to African ancestry. People assume that based on the tone of your complexion you are from a specific region. African Americans of darker skin are presumed to be from Africa or of African descent. Throughout history African Americans have been called different things and one term that suports this assumption is the term colored people. Which is also an example of language used to describe the culture.

When it comes to representing race in PVMC a single story can create dangers in society by influencing false notions of what an individual should look like, live like, and act like based off of a particular image that society has deemed normal and necessary. Honestly PVMC has made me more open minded to educating myself on other people who have different racial identities. I feel that if you shouldn’t let PVMC influence your opinions of people before giving them a chance to show you who they are first because believing stereotypes will lead to treating people unfairly and unequally. Popular, visual, and media cultures representation of race contributes to the cycle of intutionalized racism by not properly representing unarmed black victims in the media and degrading them when given any chance.
