Advertisements often make the mistake of portraying non-white women in what they believe to be their natural habit. Black women are deliberately placed in animal print or next to animals to allude to African ancestry. People assume that based on the tone of your complexion you are from a specific region. African Americans of darker skin are presumed to be from Africa or of African descent. Throughout history African Americans have been called different things and one term that suports this assumption is the term colored people. Which is also an example of language used to describe the culture.

The first thought that came to my mind was the Cheerios comercial That came out a few years ago. The couple was a interrational relationship and it was blow into some political agenda, meanwhile it was showing a normal family. The media has mass amounts of white influence and main characters are usually white. Then when we have a diverse cast it's praised when it should just be a normal thing in society. We shouldn't have to fight for representation all cultures are beautiful and should not be whitewashed. The beauty industry also is flagged with controversy, recently many brands have been under attacked for only providing foundation shades for lighter skin tones. The "normal" shade range had eight light skin tones and if you were lucky a "darker shade". Media is not always bad we have been able to provide the important information for you next generations about the unfair treatment of many races and cultures in specifically America.

Cultural appropriation has always been a very controversial topic. It is crucial to understand the intent versus impact. Many individuals may argue that their acts are for an appreciation of the culture and that it was never meant to offend a cultural group. Although intentions may not be to cause harm they can very well have a negative effect on a group as a whole. For instance, black hairstyles such as cornrows or dreads have been associated with unprofessionalism and crime. A personal example I have of this is when I used to work for a local skating rink. One rule they had was that the customers were not allowed to wear any headscarves, head wraps or durags. The explanation the owners gave us was that it was linked to gang affiliation. There was no evidence or facts that suggest this. This rule often forced us to kick out many minorities. Minorities are punished and affected for certain styles, but when celebrities or other people do it there are no repercussions. For example, models like Kendall Jenner have used dreads as a fashion statement. This can be offensive because when people of color have this hairstyle they can be punished, but when white people have used this hairstyle it is celebrated. Another example is Kim Kardashian's new shapewear brand called the Kimono. The Kimono is a traditional Japanese garment. Many people found her actions very offensive. She received backlash and later renamed it SKIMS. There are many examples of cultural appropriation in PVMC. It is essential to speak about it and call people out for it because now individuals have become more aware of it.

Norms are the agreed‐upon expectations and rules by which a culture guides the behavior of its members in any given situation. Of course, norms vary widely across cultural groups. A recent example of that comes to mind is a controversial shirt made by the world renowned fashion brand Gucci. A few moths ago, Gucci released a sweater: It was black with a high turtleneck collar that covered the lower half of the face with a cutout for the mouth that was rimmed in bright red. Some people called for a boycott of the brand. Others threatened to burn any Gucci merchandise in their own closets. This isn’t the first time a fashion brand has crossed the line when it comes to their clothes and race. The brand H&M had also recently released a hoodie that had the words “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” printed on it, receiving major backlash and criticism. These brands have to realize that there’s a boundary when it comes to designing clothes and the words that they choose to print on them.

The Washington Redskins organization is a perfect example of exoticized indigenous people in PVMC. The Redskins are a football team owned by a white man with a very controversial name some people are trying to get rid of. The issue blew up so much it was a trending topic online and Tv shows were using it as satire skits for their shows. Some people think the name is offensive and should be changed, but many others want it to stay and say it is apart of history. Some people call them indians, as they would dress in feather hats and war paint. The owner said in all caps that he will NEVER change the name, so that is where it stands as of now.
