Doctor I Need You: Chapter 6
a/n: I know it’s been a while since I’ve last updated, I sincerely apologize for that. School has really been holding me back on updating and it didn’t help that I had writers’ block. But I finally finished Chapter 6! YAY! And this chapter is a little longer than the older chapters so enjoy!
Chapter Summary: Son Soojin’s execution date is in 2 days, but she’s refusing to have surgery and might as well die “on Taeyong’s watch”. Jisoo and Xiumin have a 10 year old patient that needs a new liver and intestine. What choices will the doctors make when the 10 year old boy down the hall is dying and the only organs that match are those of a murderer who wants out of her execution?

Taeyong got a page at 3:30 in the morning, he rushed down to the hospital and ran to Soojin’s room.
“Aw man, I told them not to call you here,” Soojin groaned, “Whatever it is could’ve waited till morning, Dr. Taeyong needs his beauty sleep doesn’t he?”
Taeyong ignored her, “Your head CT’s show that your brain contusions are expanding. I need to get you in the OR right away.”
“This brain thing, could it kill me?”
“If we don’t treat it, yes.”
Soojin bursted out in laughter.
“You think that’s funny?” Taeyong scoffed.
“I’m sorry, it’s just that they’re gonna execute me in 2 days. Might as well take my chances with the brain thing am I right?” Soojin smirked, “I mean, it’s a nice way to go. With a nice attractive doctor next to me, all the jello I want-”
“Are you refusing surgery?” Taeyong cut her off.
“Either way, I’m going to die. Might as well do it on your watch.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jisoo stood outside her patient’s room waiting for Dr. Xiumin.
“I’m here! I’m here! What’s wrong?” Dr Xiumin ran up to her.
“Woojin’s B.P, it’s a little down from yesterday. If we make a few calls, get a little pushy, maybe could we get him bumped a few spots up the transplant list-”
“Dr. Jisoo, you paged me 9-1-1 at 3:30 in the morning to what? To chat?” Xiumin scoffed.
“You like to chat, you’re chatty-”
“Not at 3:30 in the morning! Look, he’s only 10, he’s very close to the top of the list, we’ll find him his organs when we find him his organs but staying up all night chatting about this will not help,” Xiumin started walking away, “I’m gonna go back to sleep, I suggest you do the same.”
Jisoo stopped him, “He’s running out of time!”
“They always are, welcome to pediatrics.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were going over Soojins charts when Taeyong spotted you, the two of you walked into Soojin’s room.
“The swelling in your brain is increasing rapidly, the longer we wait the worse it gets,” Taeyong informed her.
She smiled, “Excellent. Go team.”
“I strongly suggest you reconsider surgery.”
“Have you ever seen the inside of a maximum security prison?”
Taeyong shook his head.
“Believe me, if you had to die, this is the place to do it.”
Taeyong turned to you, “Vigilantly monitor Ms. Soojin’s elevating I.C.P.s, hourly neuro exams, when she goes unconscious which she will, we’ll rush her to surgery-”
“You can’t do that,” Soojin interrupted, “Can he do that?”
“When you’re unconscious and can’t make sound medical decisions, a 2-doctor consent is all we need to treat you”
“My god!” Soojin groaned, “I’m gonna be dead as a doornail in 2 days, Dr. Y/n you’re a reasonable-”
“We’re done here!” Taeyong cut her off.
“Do you fix your broken television before you throw it out?” Soojin called out.
“She’s got a point,” You said.
Taeyong left the room.
You started wheeling Soojin out of the room for her neuro exam.
There was a long silence between you two before she spoke, “You’re upset.”
“I don’t get upset with patients.”
“You’re mad at me for killing all those people, I get that,” Soojin sighed, “Would it help if you knew I was abused as a kid? Every day, it’s how I learned to read. I used to hide under the sink and sound out the letters in the detergent bottles.”
“Is that true?”
“Did it make you feel better?”
Jisoo was wheeling her patient Woojin to the elevator as well, his eyes lit up when he saw the handcuffs attached to Soojin.
“Cool!” He exclaimed, “Did you do something bad?”
Soojin smirked at the kid, “Traffic violation.”
You gestured Jisoo to take the elevator first.
“What’s wrong with you kid?” Soojin asked.
“I need a new liver and intestine.”
“Really? You want mine?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jisoo spotted Xiumin in the attending’s lounge where he was having his lunch. She walked over and slammed a piece of paper in front of him.
“What the-”
“I’ve made a list of the best pediatric G.I.’s in the country. If we can get one of these guys to come down and do a TIPS procedure on Woojin.”
“A TIPS procedure on a kid that needs a new liver?” Xiumin scoffed, “That’s like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound.”
“Do you have a better idea?”
“Waiting for that call, trust the process. Why can’t you do that-”
“Because!” Jisoo snapped, “I’m tired. I’m so damn tired of waiting for that call when this kid is getting worse! Woojin’s tired, his mother’s tired, the only person who’s happy to sit on his ass and twiddle his thumbs and wait is you!”
“Whoa. I’ve been patient with you. But you know what, I am really over you constantly telling me how I should do my job-”
Wonwoo knocked on the door.
“Someone has to!”
“Hey,” Wonwoo said.
Xiumin scoffed, “I have 20 other kids in this hospital!”
“Hey,” Wonwoo repeated.
“I’m concerned about this one child-”
“SHUT UP!” Wonwoo shouted, “Respectfully. Respectfully shut up. Because we’ve got organs.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play The Funeral)
Wonwoo and Xiumin left to pick picked up the organs.
“I wished you could get organs delivered or something, I hate flying,” Xiumin complained, “I feel a lot closer to death flying than in the O.R. don’t you?”
“I do now.”
“So, Taeyong and Y/n. I never thought they’d even make eye contact let alone get together. But hey, that’s like movie love isn’t it? If they do get together, that’s gonna be one hell of a story, right?”
“I don’t know.”
“Well we’re at that age right? Crushes, dating, marriage, babies, that’s the plan right?”
“I don’t know!” Wonwoo snapped, “I’m sorry. I don’t make plans okay? If there’s a future there great, if not, whatever.”
“I heard that there’s this heat between Jisoo and Jin. I don’t know both of them very well but I think that it would be interesting to see more of them-”
“What is wrong with you?” Wonwoo blurted out.
“What?”
“We just took a liver and an intestine from a little kid- A dead little kid- and you don’t even care. You’re talking about rainbows and relationships and gossiping and crap. What the hell is wrong with you?”
“You don’t think I know that they just pulled the plug on a kid? Do you not think that I get that? You don’t think I know about the tiny, tiny coffin they’re gonna stick them in? I know about the tiny coffins. I see them everywhere, in my sleep. So, if you don’t mind, I’m gonna continue talking rainbows and relationships and gossiping and crap. And I’m gonna make plans for tomorrow, because that’s what you do Wonwoo. Make plans. Turn your back on the tiny coffins and face forward...to the next kid.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You went to check up on Soojin. As always, there was that long moment of silence between the two of you as the sounds of the monitor beeps filled the air. Soojin spoke first.
“Did you know they let you choose?” Soojin asked, “Hanging, or lethal, you get to pick your poison. Which one would you choose? Medically speaking, which one’s...better?”
The sounds of the monitor hums filled the silence, you grabbed all the charts and headed towards the door. You stopped and turned around.
“With hanging, your neck breaks, which severs your spinal cord and causes your blood pressure to drop to nothing and lose consciousness. You don’t actually die until after several minutes. With lethal injection, they inject an anesthetic and put you to sleep. Then a paralytic which stops your diaphragm and lungs, then potassium, which stops your heart.”
Soojin nodded, “Was, um...was I a match for the boy?”
“Yes.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Xiumin and Wonwoo returned to the hospital and were in the O.R. finishing the surgery on Woojin. Joy sat up in the gallery looking over the whole thing, bummed out that all she can do today is watch over surgeries.
Joy sat there crossed armed, she looked at the monitor filming the surgery when she saw something odd. Joy stood up from her chair and looked at the screen a little closer.
“Oh shit,” Joy whispered, she pressed on the intercom but it wasn’t working, “No no no no!”
She bolted out of the gallery and into the O.R., Jisoo and Xiumin were about finished when Joy came running in.
“Wait! There’s a spot on the duodenum!”
Xiumin and Jisoo’s eyes averted back to the patient on the table.
Jisoo spotted it too, “What the hell is that?”
Jisoo and Xiumin were in a state of panic.
“He’s clotting and clotting and clotting!” Jisoo yelled out in frustration.
“Is there a source?” Xiumin asked.
“This can’t be happening,” Jisoo muttered under her breath, “This cannot be happening, not to this little boy. This is not happening. This is not happening.”
“These organs are dead Dr. Jisoo,” Xiumin said the words no one wanted to hear, “Keeping them in him is making him sicker. This is doing more harm than good.”
“NO! I can just-”
“He’ll die if you leave them in-”
“He’ll die if I take them out!”
Joy raised her hand, “Maybe you guys could try a Portacaval Shunt. It’ll keep the circulation going and bypass the liver.”
Jisoo shook her head, “That’s just a temporary fix.”
“Anybody got any better ideas?” Xiumin asked.
Everyone shook their heads.
“Then I don’t see what choice we have, Dr. Jisoo.”
“How much time do we have to find him new organs?” Wonwoo asked.
“24 hours,” Jisoo replied.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A code came from Son Soojin’s room, you ran as fast as you could.
“I don’t feel so good,” Soojin cried.
“I.C.P is critical, we can’t wait anymore we need to get her down to the OR-”
“NO!”
“We need to get you down to surgery,” You said.
“I’m not scared to die. I just don’t want to do it strapped down to a table like an animal,” Soojin begged, “Please, please, please, Dr. Y/n. Let me go.”
Taeyong and Taeyeon ran into the room.
“Push the paralytics! Start bagging her, intubate and get her into the OR. I need another doctor signature on the form,” Taeyong handed you the papers, “Here sign. Sign the form.”
But you couldn’t, you stood there, frozen.
“Y/n, sign the form.”
You stared at the papers but your hands wouldn’t move.
“Y/N! SIGN THE FUCKING FORM!”
Taeyeon grabbed the pen and signed it for you.
“Don’t scrub in,” Taeyong told you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You two are on Woojin all day today,” Jisoo ordered Wonwoo and Joy, “He has no liver or intestine, that means toxins are building up and his brain is gonna swell. We can’t stop it but we’re gonna try like hell to slow it down.”
Joy’s eyelids were fluttering up and down, she hadn’t had much sleep the past few days.
“Joy I need a nod or a yawn or even a burp, something that lets me know that you’re awake and capable of taking care of this child.”
“Yes, sorry, I’m all yours.”
Xiumin walked up to Jisoo.
“Jisoo, how much time do we have left?”
“16 hours at most.”
Wonwoo spoke up, “There’s a liver dialysis machine downstairs, G.I.’s using it for a clinical trial.”
“That may give Woojin a few more hours...maybe,” Xiumin shook his head and left
“Alright then, Joy, put in the I.C.P. monitor and start tracking his intracranial pressures. Wonwoo, get the machine,” Jisoo ordered.
“What is it’s already hooked up to somebody?”
“If that somebody has more than 16 hours to live then we can unhook them,” Joy said.
“I want off this case,” Jisoo said under her breath.
“Dr. Jisoo?” Wonwoo was concerned.
“I want off this case. I want off of- this little boy is gonna die and I don’t want to be there to see it. I don’t want to- I cannot see this. I want off. I want off.”
“Dr. Jisoo, when was the last time you slept?”
Jisoo took a deep breath and shook her head, “No, no, no. I’m okay, really.”
“I think you need 1 or 2 hours of rest.”
“I’m fine. I’m good. Just go get the machine.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Son Soojin had just gotten out of surgery, Taeyong started doing post-op checkups.
“How are you feeling Ms. Soojin?” Taeyong asked.
“Why didn’t you just let me go?”
“You’re not dying here.”
“What are you so scared of Dr. Taeyong?”
Taeyong ignored her, “I.C.P’s are stable, continue neuro exams-”
“Or maybe you know deep down, you’re no better than I am,” Soojin said, “You decide who lives and who dies all the time. For you they call it medicine, not a capital offense.”
“You know what? I don’t get to choose,” Taeyong snapped, “Not me, not you, and certainly not the 7 people you slaughtered. So if I say you’re not gonna die in this hospital, then there is no way in hell I will let you die in this hospital. I am nothing like you.”
He slammed the door behind him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Xiumin paged Wonwoo, he was waiting for him in the hallway.
“Hey, Dr. Xiumin, you paged me-”
“I need you to talk to the nurses,” Xiumin whispered, “Find out if any of their patients on life support are O-positive or brain dead, then crossmatch those folks against Woojin. The kid’s running out of time.”
“Okay.”
“And Wonwoo, be sensitive to their families. We need organs for this boy, but we can only ask. We do not pressure, we do not coerce. Understand?”
“Yes sir.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“It’s getting a little harder to breathe,” Soojin gasped.
“You can stop doing this Soojin,” You said.
“I know. I know.”
“Would you like me to page Dr. Taeyong?”
“He’s your boyfriend isn’t he?”
You didn’t answer.
“He is,” She answered for you, “I had a feeling.”
You turned your back to her and continued with the check up.
“The man has very good taste.”
You gathered up the charts and started heading towards the door.
“Right now, all I can think about are lemons.”
You stopped and turned around, “Lemons?” You ask.
“When my mother was dying, she said she smelled lemons. All she could talk about for 3 day were lemons. I keep waiting to smell them but I don’t,” Soojin sighed, “Then again, she was a compulsive liar.”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to page Dr. Taeyong?”
“I’m sure.”
You left the room and continued working on the charts from outside, Taeyeon came up to you with her own charts.
“How’s our serial killer?” She asked, “Are you monitoring her?”
“Yeah. I’ve got it covered.”
Taeyeon stopped writing. Both of you made eye contact, she dropped her pen and ran to Soojin’s room.
“I said I’ve got it covered!”
She opened the door and ran to Soojin, she checked her pupil responses.
“Tell me you paged Taeyong.”
“She gonna die in a few days anyways. If she dies here we can donate her organs to the 10 year old who’s gonna die down the hall. And I know Taeyong wouldn’t let me do this. So no, I didn’t page Taeyong and I hope you won’t too. Please just...let me do this.”
Soojin gasped, “Please….help...I don’t want to die….I want...to live.”
Taeyeon shook her head, “Page Dr. Taeyong right now! Code Blue 4th floor!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Xiumin got a page from Wonwoo.
“Talk to me Wonwoo.”
Wonwoo handed him charts and papers. Xiumin started reading them.
“Oh my god,” he said.
“The guy’s not a donor and they’re about to unplug him.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Soojin was stabilized by the three of you. Taeyong was looking over her scans.
“Prep her, I want her in the O.R. in 20 minutes,” He ordered Taeyeon, he turned to you, “You should’ve paged me a long time ago.”
“I was following the patient’s wishes-”
“Patient’s wishes? She doesn’t get wishes. She killed 7 people. She’s been manipulating you ever since she’s got here. She preys on young people.”
“I made a decision as her doctor.”
“It was a bad decision. The wrong decision. You’re gonna scrub in, and you’re gonna try like hell to undo what you did.”
“Why are you so adamant on having her executed?”
Taeyong pulled you out of the room, he pulled you into the elevator and pulled the alarm, stopping it.
“You wanna know why I so pro punishment?”
You nodded.
“When I was 5 years old I watched from under the kitchen counter as some man barged into my house and shot my dad for his watch. I couldn’t go and help him, all I could do is watch. Watch as my dad fell to the ground and the man took and his watch and left. They never caught him. I hope that someday they will, and he will receive the punishment he deserves. But Son Soojin is in here right now, and I hope she gets her punishment for killing those 7 innocent people.”
He pressed the alarm again and the doors opened, he walked out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play Lost Stars)
“I’m sorry, what do you want?”
Xiumin sighed, “I’m know this is excruciating, but what I want...what I need...are your husband’s organs- his livers and his bowels. He’s a match for--”
“Go away,” the woman said.
“I’m sorry?”
“Please go away. I can’t take anymore. He was healthy, two day ago, he was healthy. He’s my love. And he put his head through a windshield and I have to unplug him. He’s the man who’s supposed to hold my hand when things go bad, he is supposed to be there to help. But he gets to go to heaven, and I can’t take anymore. So please...go away. No more people cutting into him.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You, Taeyong, and Taeyeon were in the O.R. trying the repair the damages to Soojin’s brain. The door opened and Jisoo came in with tears.
“Dr. Taeyong,” Jisoo’s voice cracked.
“Dr. Jisoo.”
“I need y-you...t-to...stop,” She stuttered, “I need you to put down your scalpel. This woman is trying to kill herself and god forgive me, I need you to let her.”
“You need to leave my O.R. Dr. Jisoo.”
“1 day. In 1 day, she going to die, and her organs are going to go with her. They’ll be buried with her body and they’ll rot in the ground and that is a crime. A crime against life. It’s only 1 day. That’s all we’re taking from her and she doesn’t want it anyways.”
“We took an oath Jisoo.”
“I know…” Jisoo voice quivered, “I know we took an oath. But right now that oath makes no sense. So just stop. Just stop. Please. Don’t do anything else for this woman.”
“If I stop this surgery, it’s the equivalent of me sticking this scalpel into her brain, is that what you want?”
“Yes.”
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
Taeyeon looked at the brain, “She’s hemorrhaging through her craniectomy. Should I at least put in a subdural drain?”
“That’s up to Dr. Jisoo,” Taeyong said.
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
“Dr. Jisoo, should I put in a drain?” Taeyeon asked.
“No.”
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
Taeyeon shook her head, “There’s too much bleeding we should do something-”
“I am aware of that, Dr. Taeyeon,” Taeyong put down his scalpel, “It’s your call Jisoo. Am I an executioner or am I a surgeon?”
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
“Pick up the scalpel,” Jisoo left the room.
You, Taeyong, and Taeyeon continued with the surgery.
“Do you see any bleeders?” He asked you.
“The field is clear.”
He looked at you, you did the same.
“Good job, Dr. Y/n,” He said.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Xiumin walked back to the room.
“He can’t take his liver with him to heaven, or his bowels or his kidneys. His brain is gone, but those organs are probably good because he’s a young man,” Xiumin said, “I know this is not what you want to think about, it’s more than anyone should ever have to think about. But he can’t take his organs with him So please. Please. Please let us have his organs, so that he can give someone their life.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I’m alive,” Soojin whispered.
“Yes, you are,” You said.
“I was playing you, your boyfriend was right,” She admitted, “I wanted to destroy your career. And I wanted to be here to see the fallout.”
“You were scared Soojin. Death is scary.”
“It would be really good to have a friendly face in the crowd, you know...when they kill me.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jisoo sat in Woojin’s room, monitoring everything. Joy walked in and crouched down next to her.
“You need to get some sleep Dr. Jisoo, you’re exhausted, you’re worn out. Get some rest, please,” Joy whispered, “I think it’s time Dr. Jisoo.”
Tears started forming in her eyes, “Call her in here.”
Joy left the room and brought back Woojin’s mother.
“It’s time to hold him,” Jisoo sighed, “He’s going, Soojung, and you need to help him go. Peacefully, in his mother’s arms.”
She walked over to the bed where Woojin layed there, she embraced him.
“It’s okay baby. You can go,” She stroked his head, “Mommy will be okay, you can go. It’s okay, I won’t be mad. Woojin, you can go. It’s okay. You can go. It’s okay.”
Xiumin and Wonwoo ran into the room.
“WE HAVE ORGANS!” They both yell.
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
Everyone’s head turned towards them.
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
“We have organs! Get him to O.R. 3, NOW!” Xiumin yelled.
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
Jisoo ran to Woojin, prying his mother off him, “Starting C.P.R now.”
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
Xiumin grabbed the crash cart, “Push .35 of epi!”
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
“Get me a bicarb!” Joy yelled.
They all rushed Woojin to the O.R.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s time, Son Soojin’s execution date was today. The sound of chains clanking against ground filled the dark room. The guards guided her to the table, she took a look around the audience until her eyes met yours. She slightly smiled at you before being pushed and strapped down onto the table, chains still wrapped around her limbs.
Needles were stuck into her arms as her head turned to look at the crowd. The buzzers start blaring, Soojin turned her head back to see the ceiling.
“Huh, lemons. My mother wasn’t lying after all,” Soojin whispered to herself.
The drugs were pushed into Soojin’s body, her limbs becoming relaxed, her eyelids fluttering up and down. He soul was slowly leaving her body, leaving her eyes. You’ve seen that look far too many times before. You couldn’t take it anymore.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Woojin had just gotten out of surgery, everyone’s waiting for him to wake up, unsure if they got the organs in time.
Jisoo and Xiumin stood outside, looking at Woojin’s mother alseep next to her son.
“I crossed a line today,” Jisoo said.
“I did too.” Xiumin sighed.
“Woojin?”
Jisoo and Xiumin looked into the room. Woojin’s eyes started slowly opening.
“Can I have some water?” He asked.
His mother smiled at Jisoo and Xiumin and pulled her son into an embrace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play I Love You)
The guards opened the gates for you. Across the street, you spot Taeyong next to his car, his arms in his pockets, waiting for you. You walked over to him, puffy eyed, as if you’ve been crying for months. You crossed your arms, he looked at you, and you him.
You sighed, “I know you probably think I’m crazy for doing this. Hell, I think I’m crazy for doing this. But I just wanted to show her compassion, that’s why I went,” Tears fell down your face, “But it was so horrible. It was so fucking horrible!”
Taeyong pulled you into his arms and embraced you, “It’s okay.”
He drove you back to your house, the ride there was mostly silent. You looked at the outside the window, the sky tonight was not beautiful, it was not full of stars, today it was cloudy, as if it were going to rain.
You spoke first, “I can’t…”
“What?”
“I can’t seem to remember our last kiss.”
He didn’t talk to you the rest of the car ride. The two of you reached your house. He opened the door for you and started walking you to the door. You opened your door and walked inside, he started walking back towards his car when he turned around.
He looked at you and smiled, “Last Wednesday, in the elevator.”
“What?”
“You and I both just got out of surgery, it was 4:30 in the morning and we hadn’t been able to see each other for 2 days. We were both exhausted because we had back-to-back surgeries. And I just couldn’t bear another 7 hours without kissing you, so in that moment, I pulled the elevator alarm, and we both had 5 minutes of weakness. That was our last kiss. Last Wednesday, in the elevator.”
You, Taeyong, and Taeyeon got a page from the Chief to wait at the trauma bay. Taeyong greeted you and gave you a kiss.
“No kissing in the hospital,” You scold him, “You may kiss me all you want outside of the hospital but in here, I am just another doctor.”
Before Taeyong could give you another kiss, Taeyeon shoved the patient papers in both your faces. The 3 of you started reading on the V.I.P patient.
“Blackwell? As in the prison?” You ask.
The Chief came up to the 3 of you, “Have you read up on our V.I.P?”
“Yes,” The 3 of you say unison.
“Multiple stab wounds, badly beaten. She will have guards with her at all times. Cuffs will stay on, leg irons will stay on. Watch your syringes, sharps, and pins. I don’t want any accidents.”
*beep beep*
“She’s here,” The Chief said, “The 3 of you are my team. No residents. Keep this as quiet as possible.”
“Chief, what’s P.D.R?” Taeyeon asked.
“Get her in and out of trauma as fast as you can. The guards will attract a lot of attention.”
“Sir it’s stamped P.D.R. What is P.D.R?” Taeyeon showed him the paper.
The Chief hesitated, “Prisoner...death row.”
Jisoo and Rosé were talking to Park Nari. Her lawyer sat next to her.
“I understand your hesitation but you need a second surgery.” Jisoo said.
“Haven’t you put me through enough-”
Her lawyer stopped her, “I can make some calls, see if we can get you transferred to another hospital.”
“It’s been a week. Transfers take time, the longer we wait she’s at greater risk for infection and blood loss.” Jisoo explained.
“I couldn’t talk. I couldn’t move. The thought of your hand back inside me…” Nari looked at Rosé, “But you can do it.”
“Wh-What?”
“You were there. You stayed calm. You were kind.”
“Oh but Dr. Jisoo is far more experienced-”
“No. She’s not touching me,” Nari refused, “Promise me she won’t touch me. You can do it. She can’t.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ms. Son Soojin can you hear me?” You ask.
“Your voice is very lovely,” She moaned in pain, “My legs really hurt. Was I stabbed there?”
“No.” Taeyong bluntly replied.
“If I wasn’t stabbed in the leg why does it hurt so much?”
“The less you talk the more we can work-”
“Taeyong!” You cut him off.
“That’s alright. He’ll warm up as we get to know each other,” Soojin chuckled, “See, we’re not that different, you and I. People are alive when they meet us, then it all changes.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“2 days ago there was a code in room 2049 and no resident to cover it,” The Chief scolded Joy, “the schedule is a mess, your mess. Clean it up.”
The Chief walked away to tend to his work. Wonwoo walked up to Joy.
“Wow, Chief had on his stern face.” Wonwoo chuckled.
“I was really happy this morning. Wanna know why?” Joy asked, “Because I have back-to-back solo surgeries today.”
“Your face is telling me you want something.”
“Will you cover for me? Just do the Chief Resident thing so I can stay happy? Just for today. Please, please, please.” Joy begged.
“You want me to-”
“Be me. But, better. Be you.”
“Fine.”
Joy walked off to O.R. 4. Yuta walked over to Wonwoo.
“Do you know where Dr. Y/n is? Ugh, she hasn’t been giving me any surgeries for a week now. I think she still secretly hates me.”
“Um, Dr. Joy told me to tell you to find another specialty.” Wonwoo said.
“What?”
“Yeah, find another specialty. Go work in the ER, test the waters. Or here,” Wonwoo shoved a chart in his arms, “Discharge this patient.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mingyu went to check in his face lift patient, Yoo Yeona.
“What’s up Yeona, let’s get you out of bed, get you mobile.”
Yeona moaned, “No I’m too much pain leave me alone.
“Well the best thing for pain is to get you out of bed and get you moving. You’ll feel much better.”
“I will feel much better if you leave.”
“Yeona-”
“Stop scowling. You can scowl later when you actually have something to scowl about. Like when you get fat and can’t move. Right now you’re young, you should be having fun. Go! Enjoy your life, you getting uglier by the second.”
Mingyu left the room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yuta went to check on his patient, Min Hwan.
“Hey there Hwan, how’s it going?” Yuta asks
“By ‘how’s it going’ you’re asking me if I had the pleasure of taking a crap yet, then it’s not going.” Hwan groaned.
“It’s been 5 days since your bowel resection, you should be-”
“Crapping by now? What’s the problem? Did you people botch my surgery? Is my crap leaking out into my body?”
“The surgery was a success-”
“Listen, Dr. Yuta, I have been divorced twice, my children hate me, filed for bankruptcy, my life has basically sucked. But through it all, the one thing I had going for me was I crap like clockwork. It’s a simple pleasure and I want it back. So write me a prescription to make me crap!”
Rosé and Jisoo started scrubbing in for Park Nari’s second surgery.
“You know, there’s nothing in the rule book that says you can’t operate once she’s under,” Rosé informed Jisoo.
“No. If she wants a resident to do her surgery then a resident will do her surgery. I’m not operating on a patient that doesn’t want me to operate on her.” Jisoo handed Rosé the surgical mask, “Look. I wouldn’t let you operate unless I know you can handle it.”
“I could perforate her bowel-”
“You won’t!” Jisoo cut her off, “I will be in there with you the whole time. Look, I don’t waste my time on mentoring just anybody. Finish scrubbing in, you have a patient waiting.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ahh!” Soojin screams in pain.
“I don’t get it, she’s still in a lot of pain.” You shook your head.
“It’d help if we could get her off this backboard,” Taeyong said.
“She’s got decreased sensation to her lower right extremity.”
“According to her,” Taeyong scoffed, “She could tell you anything.”
You ignored him, “We put 10 of morphine she can’t be in this much pain.”
“Maybe push a little bit more?” Soojin asked.
“We’re here to treat you, not to feed your drug habit.” Taeyeon said.
The door opens as Jinyoung came in with the X-rays. You took a look at them.
“Dr. Taeyeon,” You called her over and pointed to the X-ray, “What’s that?”
“Whatever they stabbed her with is still in there.”
“Her back?”
“Her spine.”
Soojin laughed, “Does that mean I’m paralyzed? My execution is in 4 days, but if I’m paralyzed, my lawyer might be able to make a case for staying my execution. You guys think you can let me be a gimp?”
“No.” Taeyong replied.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rosé had been doing just fine at her solo surgery so far.
Jisoo looked over to Jin, “Everything look good?”
“B.P’s stable, BIS level’s 45. She’s still asleep just like the last time you asked. 2 minutes ago.”
Rosé continued with the surgery, “Anastomosis looks clean. Bowel’s intact”
“Get a new mesh,” Jisoo told her.
“Oh by the way, I don’t read stupid magazines in the O.R.” Jin said, “Before I was reading an article on anesthesia. In case you were wondering.”
“I wasn’t”
“I actually don’t like the sitting down part of my job. Not great for by back, I like to keep in shape, so I can carry my big buckets of money.”
Jisoo rolled her eyes, “I yell when I’m scared. Some people cry or duck, I yell. When she woke up it was scary, so I yelled. Then I yelled some more, it’s what I do.”
“Was that your apology?”
“Closest thing you’re gonna get.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wonwoo opened O.R. 4 where Joy was having fun with her solo surgery.
“Dr. Joy, can I talk to you for a moment?”
“I’m in the middle of a shattered femur, thank god for men who ride motorcycles.” Joy laughed.
“Uh, there’s some scheduling issues you have to deal with,” Wonwoo informed her.
“Can you handle them again? Thanks!”
Wonwoo walked out of the O.R, Yuta walked up to him.
“I need to talk to Dr. Joy, my patient won’t crap and won’t stop talking about it.” Yuta complained.
Mingyu spotted Wonwoo, “Hey is Joy in there? My face lift won’t walk. She’s abusive I can’t work with her.”
Rosé ran up to them, “I’m done with my patient but I’m not sure if I can discharge her if she files a lawsuit.”
The Chief spotted the little group in the hallway, “Is there a problem here?”
“Uh no, just a little jam. Dr. Joy has it under control,” Wonwoo assured him. The Chief nodded and walked away, “Ok, this is what’s gonna happen. Put crap man and face lift in the same room, they can abuse each other. Rosé, your patient can stay another night. And if anyone asks, none of this was my idea.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jisoo found the Chief in the ER watching everyone do their work. She walked over to him.
“Hey Dr. Jisoo. How’d the repair go?” He asked her.
“Perfect. No complications.” Jisoo replied.
“That’s good. How’s the lawyer?”
Jisoo laughed, “Lawyer’s still here. Drooling.”
“Shit.” He cursed.
“Tough day Chief?”
“Yeah.”
“You know 9/10 times, you can make a lawsuit go away if you apologize. People like to feel respected and they like hearing apologies.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You, Taeyong, and Taeyeon took a closer look at the X-ray.
“We’ll do everything by the book. I don’t want some lawyer keeping her alive on the basis that we didn’t giver her standard care.” Taeyong ordered.
“You’re pro-death penalty?” You asked.
“I’m pro-punishment.”
“She’s still a person, we don’t know what crime she committed. We can’t judge-”
“No. But a jury can. Go do a repeat crit. Let me know if she needs blood,” Taeyong ordered you.
You rolled your eyes before leaving the room.
“I thought you 2 were dating,” Taeyeon pointed in confusion.
“No, in here we’re just doctors.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Chief looked around for Wonwoo and spotted him going over discharge papers.
“Wonwoo!” He called out, “Do you have any idea why Park Nari is still here?”
“I believe Dr. Joy decided to keep her here another day.” Wonwoo replied.
“Why would she do that if Dr. Jisoo was ready to discharge her?” The Chief asked.
“You’ll have to ask Dr. Joy, but if was me I’d keep her here another night to try and talk her out of the lawsuit.”
“And why did Joy have Mingyu and Yuta put their patients in the same room? That’s a clear violation of protocol.”
“You’d have to ask her. But those 2 were impossible, neither one was willing to follow post-op instructions, so if it was me, I would put them both in the same room to encourage each other to get out of here faster.” Wonwoo explained.
“And Dr. Joy told Yuta to find another specialty? It’s odd to tell someone who’s so adamant about Cardio to change specialties.”
“Again, you’d have to ask Dr. Joy. But maybe it has to do with the fact that Yuta is still a bit unsure about Y/n. So Yuta needs to see what else is out there, otherwise he won’t fight hard enough to stay with Cardio.” Wonwoo shrugged, “But I’m just guessing. You need to ask Joy”
“That’s just what I’m gonna do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play A Bitter Day)
Joy had just finished her 4th solo surgery of the day. The Chief had been waiting for her.
“Dr. Joy, you got a moment?” The Chief asked her.
“Uh, I don’t actually, I have 2 more surgeries today. But I know the schedule’s been a little crazy. I’ll get on it tonight.”
“No. You’re not, actually.”
“Yeah, you’re right. It may not happen till tomorrow but uh-”
The Chief stopped her, “You’re not gonna get on it at all.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You and Taeyong continued to check up on Son Soojin.
“Is there any family we can call or-”
“I think what she’s trying to say is, what did you do to get on death row?”
“Taeyong!” You yell.
“It’s alright.” Soojin chuckled, “This one thursday, I was on a date with my boyfriend. We went back to his place and did usual date night stuff. Then he fell asleep, I for some reason couldn’t. I just really wanted to draw a knife across his throat. I had been thinking about it for a while, then this thursday, I just had to do it. I thought it’d be scary or sad, but it wasn’t. It was just...really fun. Then I did 2 more on Saturday, and another 4 on Sunday. Was gonna go for 6 on Monday, until I got caught.”
You and Taeyong left the room to prep an O.R.
You stopped him, “I tell you to treat me like a doctor here, but do not ever speak to me like I’m a resident. And what is going on with you today? Soojin is still a patient here, treat her like one.”
“No.”
“Excuse me?”
“I will not be kind to the killer who thinks we are 2 sides of the same coin. And if you want me to treat you like a doctor, then you act like one. Stop making friends with patients, stop acting like you’re their babysitter. This isn’t psychology doctor, that’s on the 5th floor. Stop confusing the 2.”
The 2 of you walked in silent all the way to the O.R. waiting for the nurses to bring your patient.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wonwoo was at the front desk filling out some papers. The Chief went over to him with crossed arms.
“Dr. Wonwoo, you’ve been covering for Dr. Joy.” He started.
“Chief, I’ve just been shuffling a little paperwork for her-”
“You’ve been doing the lion’s share of the Chief Resident’s work. All the responsibility and none of the credit. You deserve the credit. You deserve the job. I should’ve given it to you in the first place. I hope you’ll take it now.” The Chief offered, “Because what you do and how you do it makes this hospital work.”
“Well, it’s about time you noticed.” Wonwoo looked away, “‘Cause…”
Wonwoo turned around and gave the Chief a big hug.
“Thank you.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You, Taeyong, and Taeyeon started surgery, it was ghost silent. You and Taeyong couldn’t even bear to look at each other.
“So did anyone catch the game last night?” Taeyeon tried to start conversation.
“You know you shouldn’t even be on this case,” Taeyong snapped at you.
“Oh what’s she gonna do, jump off the table and get me?” You sarcastically replied, “I’m the one holding the knife.”
Taeyeon was uncomfortable, “Um, we’ll be doing a nephrectomy. One of you should mobilize the renal hilum.”
“I’ve never done one, but I’d love to try,” You said.
“Yeah because a nephrectomy is a trauma procedure, I’ve done it hundreds of times.” Taeyong pointed out.
“Well to some of us, surgery comes naturally, others have to practice,” You shot a look at Taeyong.
The 3 of you finished up the surgery successfully and cleaned up. Everyone’s shift was over as the doctors packed up their items in the attendings’ lounge. You got your bag and headed towards the door, Taeyong opened it for you, you made eye contact before quickly leaving and not looking back. And just like that, the 2 of you were strangers again.
The clock ticked 10:04, today was the hospital party. Most of the doctors and nurses are off their shift, the remaining are just consulting with their last patient today. You were excited to get a night off since forever.
Taeyong was in the ER meeting his new patient.
“Hello I’m Dr. Lee Taeyong, I’ll be your doctor today,” He greeted the man.
“Yang Oh Seong,” He shook his hand.
“It says you’re feeling chest pains, so I’ll take a quick listen,” Taeyong listened to the man’s heart, “You said you’ve been feeling some chest pain. When did it start?”
“About an hour ago. But can you please be quick, it’s my 10th marriage anniversary today I got reservation at my wife’s favorite restaurant, I can’t be the reason she doesn’t go,” Oh Seong said.
“Your heart sounds good but we don’t take chest pain lightly around here,” Taeyong looked through his charts, “I’ll have our Cardio doctor check up on you too.”
“Are they good?”
“The best. You’ll never find anyone better than her. Bit of a showoff but that’s just how she works. She’s very beautiful, of course she’d probably rather be called brilliant over beautiful,” Taeyong chuckled,
“She sounds good,” Oh Seong said.
“Ok, I’ll get a nurse to do a portable chest X-ray and do a chest pain workup. I’ll try to make it as fast a possible.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jisoo was in surgery with Rosé doing an abdominal wall tumor resection on their patient, Park Nari. Jin, as always, sat at the head of the table.
“I think we almost got it all out,” Jisoo praised Rosé, “we’ll finish early at this rate Rosé, hopefully this is our only patient tonight.”
*beep beep beep beep beep beep*
Rosé looked at the monitor, “She’s tachycardic!”
Jin started reaching for his anesthetics, “I don’t understand what happened. Everything seems to be fine here.”
“There’s no bleeding, I don’t see any bleeding,” Jisoo searched the abdominal, “I don’t see a reason why down here so why is her heart rate going through the roof?”
“Did you check her anastomosis?” Rosé asks her.
“I did, everything is intact!” Jisoo panicked, “WOAH!” Jisoo took her hands out the patient,”Did I just feel movement? Tell me I did not just feel movement.”
“The patient’s awake Dr. Jisoo,” Rosé pointed at the patient. Her eyes were opened and she was shaking.
Jisoo looked at Jin, “What the hell did you do? WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO? Get her back to sleep right now!”
Rosé held the patient’s hand, “You must be scared right now, but it’s ok. Just try and breathe for me.”
“Pushing 150 propofol,” Jin put the drugs in her and she went back to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taeyeon and Xiumin were done with their shift and having fun on the 5th floor.
“The Chief’s announcing Chief Resident today,” Taeyeon informed ihm
“Who do you think it might be?” Xiumin asked.
“Mingyu, anyone on my service wins,” Taeyeon said.
“No, I think it’s gonna be Wonwoo, he does great on my service,” Xiumin shook his head.
“Oh please, no one from the vagina squad is gonna be Chief Resident,” Taeyeon disagreed, “It’s Mingyu. No doubt.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taeyong spotted you  in the hallway.
“Doctor! Here’s my patient Yang Oh Seong’s X-ray. I think you should look at it.” Taeyong handed you the charts as well.
You took a look at them and went to Oh Seong’s room.
“Hi Oh Seong, I’m Dr. Y/n,” You greeted him.
“Oh, Dr. Y/n good news?” Oh Seong saw the expression on your face, “Or bad news?”
“Your X-ray is still concerning. I’ll have Nurse Jinyoung to get you up to C.T. to rule out anything serious,” You informed him.
“How long will that take?” Oh Seong asks before he got a text message, “That’s my wife, she’s worried we’ll miss the dinner I planned. What do I tell her?”
“I’m sorry sir you’ll probably be late,” You apologized, “How long have you been married?”
“10 years today. Do you have someone in your life?”
“No, not yet anyways,” You chuckled, “I’ve been trying to look for my soulmate for a while, but it seems like all the guys I like turn out to be…”
“I think he’s closer than you think he is. When I first met my wife, I thought she hated my guts. But today’s our 10 year anniversary, we made it work through all the ups and downs. When you meet your soulmate you won’t know right away, no matter what the movies and books say. But never miss out on a good person because they’re a bit difficult, the good ones don’t come easy,” Oh Seong told you, “Sometimes you fall for someone you’d never expect to fall for.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was time to announce Chief Resident, the Chief got up to the front of the room, everyone’s attention to him.
The Chief started talking, “Good evening doctors, I hope you’re enjoying tonight’s party. I have been a doctor for over 10 years, I’ve seen incredible residents grow into exceptional attendings. Every single resident deserves the title of Chief Resident, unfortunately only 1 can. This year’s Chief Resident is Dr. Park Joy, give her a round of applause.”
“WHAT?” Wonwoo yells. Everyone turned their heads towards him, Wonwoo stormed out of the room. Mingyu followed him from behind.
Wonwoo sat down in the middle of the hallway with sadness in his eyes. Mingyu went and sat right next to Wonwoo. Mingyu didn’t say anything, he just sat there with Wonwoo.
Wonwoo broke the silence, “She deserves it, but I’ve been working my ass off since my intern years. I’ve done every pre-op and post-op notes. I always inform the patient’s families on their condition mid-surgery. I am on Dr. Xiumin’s service when my main focus is on Cardio but I let Dr. Yuta have the Cardio doctor because he deserves to learn from the best. But why does no one appreciate me?”
Mingyu took Wonwoo’s hand and held it, “There is no doubt, you deserve it. I don’t know what to do. Right now you’re in the darkness hoping that someone will bring you the light, and I’m sorry I can’t do that. But instead, I’ll promise to sit beside you in the darkness.”
For the rest of the night, Mingyu and Wonwoo sat beside each other in the dark hallway. No words were exchanged, throughout the whole night Mingyu just held Wonwoo’s hand in silent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taeyong was walking around looking for you. He saw you in the attendings’ lounge packing up to go to the hospital party.
“Doctor!” He called out, he ran to you, “Oh Seong’s mediastinum looks borderline on the P.A films. Here’s the X-ray.”
“Get a C.T to be safe, do it quick. I don’t want him to miss his anniversary dinner.”
“The hospital party already started an hour ago.”
“Let’s be quick then.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play Bleeding Out)
Jisoo, Rosé, and Jin went to go check up on their patient.
“We finished the tumor resection, we got the entire thing, it went very well,” Jisoo updated Nari.
“Really?” Nari scoffed at them, “What about when I woke up? When I could smell my own burning flesh, I was unable to speak, I was feeling your hands butchering my insides. How well was that?”
Jisoo excused herself and left the room, Jin followed her outside. She had tears in her eyes, Jin stopped her.
“Here’s what we do, I’ll check-”
“What we do? We?” Jisoo scoffed, “My patient is traumatized. The only thing we are doing is getting sued because of you.”
“Why are you speaking to me like that? You have no idea what went wrong in that OR-”
“You want to know what I know? Here’s what I know. I know you’ve worked here for 4 years, I know you had a surgical residency but never did anything with it, and I know you’re an anesthesiologist, so you make buckets of money sitting on your behind, flipping through stupid magazines, while a surgeon is on the other side of the curtain, does the real work and gets sued for it.”
“You have no idea-”
“I don’t know if you’re distracted or tired but I expect to be able to trust the gas man. Trust him to do his job so I can do mine. I expect you to stay awake, no matter how long or boring a surgery may be. I expect you to stay focused long enough to keep the patient unconscious!” Jisoo wiped away her tears and walked away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were in the ER going through discharge papers, it was empty, everyone was on the 5th floor having fun. Taeyong ran in.
“Doctor, our patient’s coding in the scanner!”
“WHAT?”
You and Taeyong ran to C.T. where Oh Seong laid there coding. You ran over and felt his pulse.
“V-Fib, hand me the paddles” You grabbed them, “Charge to 200. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
“Charge to 300. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
His heartbeat returned.
“I’ll get an OR prepped and ready,” Taeyong told you.
“No time. He needs surgery now.”
The 2 of you pushed the bed with Oh Seong to the elevators. Taeyong stood next to you.
“Once these doors open we need to get him in the OR and open him fast,” You tied up your hair, “Even then, if his aorta tears we may be too late. We won't have time to scrub.”
Taeyong pulled out hand sanitizer and gave you some. The elevator opens. The 2 of you push the bed and ran into the OR. Both of you gowned up as fast a possible and started the surgery.
You held out your hand, “Scalpel.”
“Cauterizing now,” Taeyong said.
“Get in quick Taeyong.”
“This guy thought he just had some chest pains, he went from that to this,” Taeyong shook his head.
“How’s his pressure?” You ask.
“70’s and dropping.”
“Every beat of his heart rips this tear a little bit wider.”
“How many of these ruptured dissections have you caught in time to operate?” Taeyong asks you.
“40. Close to 50.”
“How many have you saved?”
“4.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jisoo was on the 5th floor, but instead of partying, she was sitting down. Jin ran over to her with a piece of paper in his hand.
“The gas man would like an apology,” Jin hands Jisoo the paper.
“What is this?” Jisoo shook her head.
“It’s Park Nari’s cytochrome P-450 results. She metabolizes anesthetic drugs too fast. There’s no way we could’ve known that before surgery.”
“So this is why she woke up?” Jisoo asked him.
“Yes. Now you don’t have to get down on your knees and apologize but something along the line of ‘You were right. I was wrong. You’re a hell of doctor Kim Seokjin.’ something heartfelt.” Jin chuckled.
“She’s gonna need a second surgery.”
“Alright, it won’t be easy but now I know how to keep her under,” Jin shrugged.
“She won’t let me touch her. I am good with patients, they trust me. But she won’t even let me touch her.”
Jin pulled Jisoo into a hug.
“We’ll figure something out,” He assured her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You continued operating on Oh Seong, “I’m in.”
*beep beep beep beep beep beep*
Taeyong panicked, “No no no no no!”
“He’s bleeding out!” You yelled, “His aorta is wide open. Clamp! Hurry Hurry! Ok Taeyong, let’s try sucker bypass.”
“It’s not working there’s too much blood,” Taeyong groaned.
*beep beep beep beep beep beep*
“Heart’s fibrillating!” Taeyong yelled.
“I’m doing cardiac massage now,” You started massaging the heart, “I almost got him cannulated.”
“Paddles.” Taeyong stuck his hand out, “Charge to 10. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
“Fuck!” Taeyong cursed, “He’s bleeding out his nose and ears. Foley’s full of blood too.”
You were getting frustrated, “He’s D.I.C. his cannula sites are oozing.”
“Push 3 of epi,” Taeyong ordered, “Set me up for another shock. Charge to 30. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
*beeeeeeeeeeeeep*
Taeyong looked at the monitor, “What do we do now?”
“Nothing, his aorta is in shreds. There’s nothing left to do. These things are impossible to catch, we’re too late.”
“Then call it doctor.”
There was a long moment of silent between the 2 of you. The long, monotone, continuous beep filling the silence.
“Time of death 12:07 A.M.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You changed into a black dress, Taeyong changed into a nice suit. The 2 of you made your way up to the 5th floor for the hospital party. Everybody seemed to be having fun, but you just couldn’t get Yang Oh Seong out of your head. Taeyeon spotted you and Taeyong and dragged the both of you to the dance floor.
“Come on Y/n, it’s a break from surgery. Have some fun!” Taeyeon drunkenly said.
“Um...excuse me for a minute,” You left the place and ran off.
You left the area and went into the elevator, going up to the building’s rooftop.. You sat down looking at the sky, the stars were more beautiful than yesterday. The music from the party can be heard from up here. You were a doctor, you see death all the time, but this one was hitting you hard.
The sound of the elevator door opening turned your head, Taeyong walked up to you with 2 glasses in his hand. He handed you one of them.
“It’s iced tea.”
“You should’ve gotten me alcohol,” You groaned.
He chuckled, “Did you come here to look at the stars? Or the moon?”
“Both. People always say that when they find their soulmate, they are the sun to them. But is it wrong I find the moon more beautiful than the sun? I mean unlike the sun, the moon revolves around us. We are it’s universe, it’s world. For the moon, it’s always been just us.”
(Play Cosmic Love. Play this while reading, you NEED to.)
He took the drink out of your hand and set both of the glasses down on a table. You could hear the cheers from the party as Cosmic Love by Florence & The Machines started playing.
Taeyong grabbed your arms and placed them around his neck, his hands went down and wrapped your waist.
“What are you doing?” You ask him.
“You were so excited for this party, you’re not spending it looking at the sky mourning over a dead patient. It’s a slow song. Dance with me doctor.”
“I can’t. I don’t even-”
Taeyong cut you off, “Don’t worry if you’re not dancing on beat. Don’t worry if you step on my toes. Don’t worry if you look totally stupid. Just dance with me.”
The 2 of you started swaying to the music, your eyes met his. The moonlight bouncing off his face highlighting his breathtaking features.
“Look, just because today you didn’t save this patient, doesn’t mean you’re a bad doctor. You did everything you could.” Taeyong assured you.
“Yeah but... every time my patient doesn’t make it out of my OR alive, I feel a little less extraordinary and a little more...ordinary. And the thought of being an ordinary surgeon frightens me so much. This hospital has an ocean of doctors, but when I get a bad outcome, I just think that maybe I’m not a wave but just a...ripple.”
Taeyong laughed, “Doctor, that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. You are anything but ordinary. You are a brilliant doctor. When I first met you, yeah I hated you but, I couldn’t help but study how you do your work. You’re so focused, you don’t take crap from anyone, and you’re so confident. No one is better than you, no one even compares to you. You are anything but ordinary...Y/n.”
“Thank you,” you said.
And perhaps it was the music playing, or the enchanting moonlight, or if you’ve been reading too many contemporaries, but you knew this was where he’d kissed you.
His hands traveled up to your face, he tilted his head as he leaned in. His soft, sweet like honey lips crashed with yours. And in the moment, it was like the whole world fell away. He pulled away and your eyes met his.
“I don’t know why, but I think I’m falling for you,” Taeyong slightly smiled.
“That’s just how some things happen, sometimes you fall for someone you’d never expect to fall for.”
He pulled you into another kiss, soft and slowly.
a/n: Don’t think it ends here. There’s a lot more that happens between you and Taeyong. Also I apologize for posting this late, I had writer’s block for the past few days.
Doctor I Need You is giving me so much life! I hope you keep on writing it's really good!
Thank you so much! You don't really see too many medical fanfics, I know why now, the medical aspect is difficult as heck. But I enjoy the challenge and will continue to write. Look forward to more romance between the reader and Taeyong, also romance between other doctor couples as well. 😄
I’m Fine Thank You - Ladies Code
Today was another slow day at Serenity Hospital. It was lunchtime, you sat with your fellow doctors. Not one peep came out of your mouths because none of you knew what to say. Tomorrow, Serenity Hospital and Heartstone Medical Center will merge together to become Heartstone Serenity Hospital. The rivalry between Heartstone and Serenity has been going on for about 8 decades now.
The idea of even being in the same operating room of the doctors of Heartstone makes you gag. But the worst, at least half of the doctors and nurses will be fired to make room for the merger. Today is the day where you find out if you’ll stay in or be cut off.
Dr. Wonwoo broke the silence, “How many residents do you think they’ll keep?”
“Stop worrying Wonwoo, you’ll be fine,” Jisoo assured.
Just then, Jinyoung came running to table. He took a moment to catch his breath, “I heard that most of the attending surgeons will stay but they’re firing half of the nurses and residents.”
“Fuck…” Wonwoo muttered under his breath.
“Who’s dumbass idea was it to merge the 2 hospitals who hate each other together?” Jin asked, “I refuse to work with those hotshots.”
“Agreed.” We all said in unison.
We began eating in silent, feeling uneasy about who might be staying and who might leave.
Sohn Shownu came running in the cafeteria out of breath, “They posted the list! They posted the list!”
Every doctor and nurse ran out of the cafeteria to the medical board looking at the list of doctors and nurses that were staying. Running as fast as you can, you reached the medical board first and scanned the list for your name. The list couldn’t have more than 25 names, after scanning through 10 names, you sighed of relief after seeing ‘Dr. y/l/n y/n - Cardiothoracics’.
You’re relief didn’t last long when all the other doctors and nurses rammed into you trying to find their names as well.
After a couple of minutes every doctor and nurse has seen the list. There were tears of joy and sadness everywhere. You started looking for your friends. You found Jin and Jisoo right away after the sight of both of them awkwardly dancing and celebrating they were on the list. Jinyoung and Shownu were found embracing each other. God these kids are so weird.
Strolling down the hallway you finally found Wonwoo, crying.
“I thought I saw your name on the list,” You were confused.
“I saw my name but it’s strange,” Wonwoo sniffled in confusement, “I don’t understand why so many exceptional residents were cut off and I, an average 5th year resident made it. Somehow I feel as if I don’t deserve it.”
“Dr. Jeon Wonwoo, don’t you ever say that about yourself again. The world is going to knock you around plenty. You don’t need to be doing it to yourself,” You scolded him.
~~~~~~~~ The Next Day ~~~~~~~~~
Your pager woke you up in after getting 2 hours of sleep in the on call room. Today’s the day the merger’s finally happening. As you got out of bed, you took a look at the page you got, Jisoo paged you to come to the front of the hospital.
When you got there, the sight made you almost vomit. Construction workers were adding “Heartstone” to the hospital sign.
“Oh god, I’m gonna puke,” You gagged.
Jinyoung grabbed your shoulders, “It doesn’t stop here,” he turns you around to the sight of Hearstone doctors and nurses.
“I have to perform surgery with these asses?” You were livid.
“Also did you see the new Chief of surgery?” Jisoo asked, “the true definition of Mr. Pretentious”
“It also seems I have another competitor for Chief Resident too, someone named Nakamoto Yuta?” Wonwoo scoffed.
“I heard there’s another scrub nurse as well. I liked it when I was the favorite scrub nurse.” Shownu pouted.
Dr. Kim Seokjin came up to us, “What the hell are you guys doing? Yes those Heartstone doctors think they own this place but we have patients to serve. If you guys think you’re better doctors than them, then go and treat your patients.”
We all left and went to the ward. Jin is a person we all pick on because he’s so useless, but he sure is a damn good doctor.
Walking into the ER you decided to treat a little girl named Haru. You always liked treating kids.
You greeted her parent, “Hello guys I’m Dr. y/l/n y/n. So what does your child need today?”
“Oh we told that doctor over there already, she’s been having these pains on her back,” Her mother informed you.
“You already told a doctor?” You asked.
“Yeah that’s me,” it was a man’s voice, not one you recognized which could only mean one thing. You turned around to see a doctor from Heartstone. “Your daughter is just experiencing some growing pains, perfectly normal at her age”
“Thank you doctor,” Haru’s father shook the doctor’s hand. You scoffed at the doctor, he looked at you and just scoffed back, you went to find another patient.
Both of you seem to be in a race seeing who can treat more patients. Every time you treated a patient you walked passed him and you both glared into each other’s eyes. Every time he treated a patient he walked past you and very discreetly coughed the number of patients he treated. What an asshole.
After a couple of hours the ER was near empty and the remaining patients were in the process of being treated.
You both were on opposite sides of the room, he glared at you. You could feel the hatred in his eyes, of course none of the Heartstone doctors wanted this merger too. He started walking towards you, when he reached you he went and stood by your side. Both of you stood there in silence with this indescribable tension between you.
He was the first to talk, “So doctor, how many did you get to treat today?”
“10” You hesitantly responded.
The doctor turned his body and came closer to you, too close. You turned around as well and found yourselves in a staring contest, you wanted to scold yourself for thinking that this doctor was so good looking. He then proceed to show a cocky smirk before his mouth came towards your ear.
He whispered, “12. Sorry doctor, I guess you just weren’t fast enough.” You lightly pushed him away.
“Are all Heartstone doctors douchebags like you?’ You cocked a smirk back at him.
“You shouldn’t call me names doctor,” The man looks down at your nametag, “y/n, we might work together soon.”
“I’d rather set myself on fire doctor,” You looked at his name tag, “Taeyong”
Before he could fire back with some sarcastic comment, the ER doors opened with force. Paramedics were rushing in with injured people.
“There was a train crash, multiple casualties and injuries.” One of the paramedics informed you. Doctors came rushing into the ER claiming a person to treat.
Dr. Lee Taeyong seems to be giving orders to the doctors, he’s probably a trauma surgeon. Each doctor seems to be getting into pairs for 1 patient. The Heartstone doctors and Serenity doctors still keeping clear of each other. You looked around and found a patient you were kind of eager to treat, an object through her chest. You ran to the bed and claimed the patient, at the same time you saw him grab it too. Shit. Lee Taeyong grabbed this patient too.
Both of you stared at each other again, waiting for the other person to let go and find another patient until the woman started flatlining. You didn’t care anymore, even though you so desperately don’t want to work with Heartstone doctors, especially this one, you are still a doctor, an exceptional one at that. Taeyong probably had the same thought, you both started wheeling the woman to OR room 3.

------------
(My type)
Ever since the night you saved Choi Haru’s life, the Heartstone doctors and Serenity doctors have really bonded.
Lunchtime rolled around, you sat with Xiumin, Jisoo, Taeyong, and Taeyeon.
“So Dr. Y/n, how’s working with Yuta?” Xiumin asks you.
“I’m actually impressed, he may in fact be the best resident I’ve ever seen,” You chuckled, “But I don’t think he likes me.”
“Oooh, he doesn’t like you?” Taeyeon laughed, “Well he did get the last 3 Cardio surgeons at Heartstone fired.”
“Yuta just needs a strong Cardio attending that’s all,” Taeyong assured you.
Taeyeon shook her head, “I don’t know Y/n, the last Cardio surgeon- OW! Did you just kick me?” Taeyeon glared at Xiumin.
“No that was me,” Jisoo raised her hand.
Across the room Yuta, Wonwoo, Mingyu, Joy, and Rosé were eating their lunch.
“Are you enjoying working with Dr. Y/n?” Joy asked Yuta, “I heard she’s a Cardio goddess.”
“Ugh,” Yuta rolled his eyes.
“Leave Dr. Y/n alone, she’s not used to working with you,” Wonwoo said.
Yuta scowled, “Why are you defending her? She went to a state school.”
“So did I,” Rosé pointed out.
“But she’s a Serenity doctor.”
“So am I,” Wonwoo pointed out.
“But she’s annoying.”
“So are you,” Mingyu said.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Joy was treating a motorcycle victim in trauma 3. Taeyong got her page and ran there.
“Fill me in.”
“Systolic is stabilizing but he’s still having multiple arrhythmias, I’m about to do a chest tube,” Joy said with confidence.
“Joy have you thought about what your specialty might be?” Taeyong asked her.
“No sir.”
“It’s trauma.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You and Jisoo were in the attendings’ lounge drinking coffee.
“Isn’t it time for you to get a boyfriend?” Jisoo asked you.
“Isn’t it time for you to get a Jin?” You fired back.
“What?”
“You know in cartoons when a bear is starving and it looks at an object and the object turns into a turkey?”
“I don’t look at Jin like that,” Jisoo scoffed, “What about you and Taeyong?”
“What?”
“You know in cartoons when a bear is starving and it looks at a cute doctor?”
“Shut up,” You laughed.
*beep beep*
“Dammit, Yuta’s paging me, finish my coffee for me” You excused yourself and ran to the ER.
“Why’d you page me?”
“This is Jinu, 8 years old, asthmatic. Nebs at home haven't been working. He’s still having trouble breathing,” Yuta said.
“Jinu, I’m gonna take a listen to your heart ok?” You put the cold metal on his chest and listen for awhile, “Has Jinu have any other medical trouble?”
“A febrile seizure at 3 months,” Yuta informed you.
“Ok, page Dr. Xiumin and book an OR.”
“What why?”
“Because I said so.”
“He has asthma.”
“Cardiac asthma.” You corrected him.
“How do you know?”
“The seizure he had, wasn’t from a fever he had a heart attack then and he’s having one now. So book an OR because I’m your attending. When I tell you to book an OR, you book an OR.” You snapped at him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play Fire)
Taeyong got a page from Joy, he ran to trauma 1 where Joy was performing CPR on her patient.
“What’s happening Joy?”
“I put in the chest tube but there was no blood. Tried another one there was no pulse.” Joy said.
“How long has he been down?” Taeyong asked her.
“20 minutes. Do I open the chest?” Joy asked him.
“Move on Joy, he’s gone. You can’t save him. Call it.”
Joy removed her hands from the man’s chest, “Time of death 4:55 p.m.”
Taeyong saw the sadness in Joy’s eyes, “You did everything you could. Trauma’s a team sport, you don’t have to be the hero. Just go where you’re needed.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You, Yuta and Xiumin were in surgery.
“See the anatomy here?” Xiumin pointed, “the coronary artery is attached to the pulmonary artery.”
“It’s presented as asthma, but it’s actually alcapa.” You looked at Yuta.
“How’d you know?” He looked at you with astonishment.
“I saw some cardiomegaly on the x-rays and heard a murmur through his wheezing. You’ll know for next time. And after today, you’ll know how to fix it.”
“I thought you and Dr. Xiumin were-”
“Dr. Xiumin, do you mind if Yuta first assists me on this one?” You ask him. He stepped aside for Yuta. Yuta had a happy glint in his eyes and started the surgery with you.
“Let’s see Dr. Yuta’s handiwork,” You smiled at him.
*beep beep beep beep beep beep*
Xiumin stepped up, “The bleeding is behind the coronary artery anastomosis.”
Yuta frowned, “My anastomosis.”
“Ok Yuta how are you gonna fix it?” You asked him.
Yuta frantically tried fixing his mistake, “Help me Dr. Y/n”
“You can do this,” You assured him, “tell me what you want to do.”
“I want to defibrillate.”
“Then do it.”
Yuta grabbed the paddle and put it around the exposed heart.
“Charge to 20. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
The heartbeat normalized.
“Good job,” You praised him, “Now keep your eyes on the field and do exactly what I say. We’ll fix this without rearresting the heart. Are you with me?”
“Yes.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The surgery finally finished, your shift was over, you started packing up to go home. Taeyong walked in the attendings lounge.
“Hey, I heard you lost a patient today.”
“Yeah, nothing I could do to save him. But Joy, she’s gonna be an excellent trauma surgeon one day.” Taeyong said.
“I think I got Yuta to like me,” You chuckled.
“Wow, you’re the first Cardio surgeon to do so.” Taeyong laughed, “Hey doctor, are you coming to the hospital party tomorrow?”
“Are you kidding me? A no work day, I’m there.” You laughed, “Are you coming?”
“I’ll see you there.” Taeyong grabbed your bag for you and handed it to you. You moved your body closer to his and looked into his eyes. He looked back into yours.
The door slammed open. Taeyeon walked in.
“Guess what hap-WOAH,” Taeyeon looked at the position the 2 of you were in, “Were you 2 about to kiss?”
The both of you shook your heads vigorously, “No,” you said in unison. You grabbed your bag and left the room in embarrassment.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yuta went into the residents lounge with a huge smile on his face.
“Why are you so happy?” Mingyu asked.
“Today I did a Takeuchi repair,” Yuta bragged.
Wonwoo looked at him in shock, “You did not.”
“Not all by myself but Dr. Y/n did let me do the coronary artery anastomosis.”
“Maybe she is a cardio goddess,” Joy said.
“Yeah,” Yuta agreed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play Cosmic Love)
You walked outside the hospital and was about to leave when you felt a tap on your shoulder. It was Taeyong.
“It’s still early doctor, you wanna grab a drink?” He asked you.
“I have to drive Taeyong.”
“Who said it had to be alcoholic?”
“Alright,” You agreed.
The 2 of you started walking together, the sky filled with stars. It was quiet, not an uncomfortable quiet just quiet. Like an old married couple having late night walks staring at the beauty that surrounds them.
“The stars, really shine bright tonight,” You broke the silence.
“Yep.”
“And the city lights the shine go so beautifully along with it. The moon looks wonderful tonight, wow. I’ve never really looked at the sky, can anything be more beautiful than the billions of stars shining so bright in the infinite dark of our universe?”
Taeyong laughed at your enthusiasm. You rolled your eyes at him as the 2 of you walked into a bar.
“What would the 2 of you like?” the bartender asks.
“Uh just iced tea,” You said.
“And for the gentleman?”
“The same please.”
You 2 sat down and started sipping on the drink.
“Can I ask you something?” You spoke.
“Yeah.”
“Why do you never call me by my first name? Ever since we met you’ve been calling me ‘doctor’ instead of my real name.”
“I don’t really call anyone ‘doctor’ except you,” He replied.
“Is that supposed to be flattering?”
“Ok, I’m gonna admit something,” Taeyong chuckled, “I’ve been practicing saying your name ever since we met. At first it was for me insulting you but then we became friends and every time I say your name it’s just…” Taeyong smiled, “nevermind.”
“Nevermind? What? You can’t tell me a story and end it with nevermind,”
“Nevermind, just drink your iced tea. Forget I said anything,” Taeyong changed the subject, “Are Jisoo and Jin like a thing?”
“I wished. You have a girlfriend?”
“No. Maybe it’s because I keep looking for the perfect woman, the one who loves my little quirks and mistakes. The one I connect to right away. My soulmate you know? Do you believe in soulmates?”
“Yeah. I think there are simply just some people in this world that we just have a connection to right away. The ones where you smile when you hear their names. You can’t get them out your head no matter what you do. And when you look at them, you just know it. Whether that be a friend, family, or a lover. Maybe that’s why I don’t have a boyfriend, I’m such a hopeless romantic.”
“I think you’ll find your soulmate one day,” Taeyong assured you.
“Let’s hope.”
You both finished your iced tea.
“One more?” He asked you.
“Maybe a couple more.”
------------
“…and when one of them meets the other half, the actual half of himself, whether he be a lover of youth or a lover of another sort, the pair are lost in an amazement of love and friendship and intimacy and one will not be out of the other’s sight, as I may say, even for a moment…” - Plato
It’s been 14 days since the merger happened, even after 2 weeks of being around each other. The Heartstone doctors and Serenity doctors still sit on opposite sides of the room. The Chief called all the doctors to the Hospital auditorium.
“Good morning doctors. As you know, ever since the merger we’ve lost a lot of doctors on both sides. So recently the hospital board came to the decision to hire more residents,” The Chief announced.
“Dammit!” You hear Wonwoo yell, everyone turned their heads towards him, “Sorry sir.”
“Our new 5th year residents are Dr. Park Joy, Dr. Kim Mingyu, and Dr. Park Rosé.” He pointed out, “5th year residents, get as many good surgery outcomes as you can. It’ll look good for your board exams.”
The Chief continued, “We’re busy people so I’ll be brief. Attendings, you will spread your wealth of knowledge equally among all residents. Your residents reflect on you, they fail you fail. We are surgeons, we are a team. Next week the hospital will be having a party, located on the 5th floor’s lobby. Come and relax from surgery for a night. Now, get to work.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were signing discharge papers in the ER. Taeyong came and gave Jinyoung his discharge papers.
“This is the third patient I’ve discharged doctor, what about you?” Taeyong asked.
You scoffed, “Taeyong I am not your friend.”
“Doctor I don’t give a rat’s ass if you’re my friend or not, what can’t loosen up and have a little competition fun?”
You scoffed again, “First to discharge 10 patients wins.” You ran off first him following behind.
He was ahead by 2 patients already, you scanned the room for the easiest treatment. Yuta was stitching up a patient, you ran towards him.  You pushed him away from her. Yuta looked at you in confusement before walking off.
Taeyong saw Wonwoo drawing blood from one patient. He took the needle out of his hand and shooed him away. Wonwoo shot him a dirty look and left.
You finished writing your tenth discharge papers, at the same time Taeyong did too. You made a run towards Jinyoung, he did too. You got there first and handed the papers to Jinyoung.
“I WIN!” You gloated and laughed at Taeyong, “You wanna be me but you caaaaan’t! You wanna be me but you caaaaan’t!”
Taeyong smiled at you in defeat, “Okay doctor you did good.”
You smiled back at him, “Thank you.”
Jisoo walked past the both of you, “Okay doctors stop flirting with each other.”
You laughed, “We weren’t flirt-”
Ambulance sirens cut you off, the attendings and residents rush to the ER entrance, the ER doors open.
“We found her in an alley, presumed overdose. Tried narcan. No response. Shocked her in the field once at 300. BP is 80 over 60, SATs 96 on 100%” The paramedic informed you.
“I got this one, take her to bed 1” Taeyong said, “I need a resident!”
Joy volunteered, “I’ll come with you!”
Another ambulance pulled up.
“Car crash victim, 13 year old female abdominal pain. Last vitals show a B.P of 100 over 80. Pulse of 120.”
“I got this patient! Take her to trauma 1,” Jisoo grabbed onto the bed, “Any of you will do, uh...you let’s go scrub in.” Jisoo pointed at Rosé.
You, Yuta, Taeyeon, Xiumin, Wonwoo, and Mingyu stood there in silent. You spoke first.
“I have an aortic aneurysm today, which one of you is interested in Cardio?”
Yuta raised his hand.
“Great, you can scrub in later Heartstone.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play Error)
Taeyong and Joy wheeled their patient into the ER to bed 1.
They stopped next to bed 1, “On my count we’re gonna lift her and put her in the bed. 1. 2-”
*beep beep beep beep beep beep beep*
Taeyong looked at the monitor, “STOP. V-FIB! Charge paddles to 300. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
Her heart returned to normal.
“Ok on my count, 1. 2. 3!”
Taeyong and Joy lifted her up and laid her down in bed 1.
“Let’s get a tox screen, e.k.g, c.b.c, a c.m.p and an x-ray now!” Taeyong ordered.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jisoo and Rosé were in surgery already. Jin put the patient to sleep and sat at the head of the table watching Jisoo’s quick hands.
“It looks like a grade 4 liver lac. Rosé do an omental pedicle repair.”
“Did you really catch Y/n and that Heartstone hotshot doctor flirting with each other?” Jin laughed.
“I swear if I didn’t stop them, give it 5 minutes they’d be in the on call room all over each other by now,” Jisoo joked.
*beep beep beep beep beep beep beep*
“What did you do?” Jisoo snapped at Rosé
“Nothing, I’m just irrigating,” Rosé panicked.
Jin looked at the monitor, “Her temp spiked. C-O-2 levels are through the roof,”
Jisoo looked at the monitor, “She’s tachycardic,”
“Increased heart rate, patient’s burning up. I didn’t use SUX but i did use sevoflurane...ICE! WE NEED ICE!” Jin ordered one of the scrub nurses, “The kid’s about to go into organ failure. Pushing dantrolene. Get cooling blankets and turn the thermostat down in here as low as possible.”
Jisoo came to the realization too, “Holy shit, malignant hyperthermia.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taeyong’s patient woke up.
“Hey there.” Taeyong greeted her.
“Aw man what happened now?” She rolled her eyes.
“You OD'd, heart stopped, but now you’re stable. What’s your name?”
“Haru.”
“Surname?”
“Choi.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Get another cooling blanket in here!” Jisoo told the scrub nurses, “Rosé let’s repack the liver. Gelfoam, what else?”
“Give her dantrolene to relax the muscles, the lidocaine for the heart.” Jin informed her, “Then we just wait. Looks like the heart rate’s coming down. Temperature’s starting to stabilize.”
Jisoo looked at Jin, “Usually when you realize it’s malignant hyperthermia it’s too late. Nice catch Dr. Seokjin.”
“Well it’s your first surgery in a while, I didn’t think you’d need a bad outcome.”
“So what you did this for me?” Jisoo cocked her eyebrow.
“Yeah because if it were any other doctor, I would’ve kept quiet,” Jin sarcastically said.
Jisoo started shivering, “Damn it’s cold in here.”
“Jump up and down, maybe that’ll warm you up.”
“I’ll repair the liver, maybe that’ll warm me up. Suction.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You got a page from Taeyong, Choi Haru heart stopped again. You ran there with, Jinyoung handed you the paddles.
“Charge 300. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
Her heartbeat went back to normal. You checked her pupil response.
“What happened?” She said groggily.
“Your heart stopped again because of the cocaine you’ve enjoyed. You’ll need a surgical implant. An A.I.C.D pacemaker. Now stop dying and let me work on my patient.” You walked out the room.
“Well isn’t she just a ray of sunshine?” Haru scoffed.
Taeyong laughed, “She is.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You and Yuta began your aortic aneurysm surgery.
“Alright Heartstone, we’ll be doing a direct approach-”
“Wait wait, why aren’t we doing a TEVAR?.” Yuta cut you off.
“Because this way is more fun.”
“But TEVAR is safer and far less invasive. You don’t have to crack the chest.”
“Are you questioning my method of surgery Dr. Yuta?” You made eye contact, “I already ordered the graft so shut up and work. 10-blade.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Xiumin and Taeyeon went to the Attendings lounge to trash talk about doctors.
“Did you hear Taeyong and that Cardio chick were flirting with each other today?”
Taeyeon gasped, “What? That traitor, I never really liked him anyway. And Cardio? That’s what sissies do. Go into Neuro or something it’s badass.”
“Yeah but with Peds you get everything, nuero, cardio, ortho, and on a smaller canvas. Way more badass.”
“I don’t think so.”
“Ugh my head hurts.” Xiumin moaned.
“Is it a tumor?”
“You wish it’s a tumor. Maybe then you’d get to be in an OR.”
“I’d rip your face off if it means I get to be in an OR.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play Beautiful Liar)
Yuta looked at the clock, “Less than 7 minutes of circulatory arrest left, if we go over that the organs start dying.”
“Done.” You cut the thread, “go back on bypass.”
“Wait, I see a leak!” Yuta called out.
“Ok, I’ll find it and throw a stitch.”
“No, it’s too risky. The leak’s behind the heart, you need to do an internal graft,” Yuta stopped you.
“Heartstone will you shut up I will find it!” You snapped at him.
Yuta stepped out the OR. He went to the ER looking for Taeyong.
“Aren’t you supposed to be in surgery with that Cardio doctor?” Taeyong asked him.
“She’s killing her patient!” Yuta said in frustration, “You need to stop her, she’s killing the patient.”
Taeyong and Yuta ran to OR 4. Taeyong grabbed a mask. You heard them but you didn’t look back.
“Doctor, take your hand out the patient now!” Tayong yelled at you. You didn’t, you kept looking for the leak. “Doctor! Remove your hand-”
“Dr. Yuta called you in to stop me because he doesn’t want a bad outcome on his record right? Now with all due respect Dr. Taeyong we both don’t know each other very well but I’m beyond extraordinary at what I do. I will find that leak and stitch it up. If I can’t, then I’ll do an internal graft. If I do, then Yuta here may hold the clamp. Now Dr. Yuta, scrub in or get out of my OR.” You kept looking for the leak, “I got it! Give me a clamp, 2-0 prolene. See? I got it.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mingyu and Wonwoo were in the Resident’s lounge, both sitting at different tables, every once in a while glancing over to the other person. Mingyu got up and walked to the coffee machine. He took 2 cups and filled them. Then he went to Wonwoo and passed him a cup.
“Thank you,” Wonwoo said.
“You’re welcome,” Mingyu then went back to his table and the 2 sat and drank their coffee in silent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You finished your surgery successfully. You stepped out the OR and spotted Yuta, you walked up to him.
“Dr. Yuta, what you did in my OR today is unacceptable. You are a resident, in a couple of months you will be an attending. I saw you in that OR today, you are good at what you do. But right now, you are just flirting with Cardio. I am married to the freaking thing. I’ll be waiting for your apology any day now.”
It was nighttime by now, you were finished with your shift and got ready to go home until you got a page.
*beep beep*
It was Haru, code blue. You ran to the ER where Jisoo was already performing CPR on her.
“Pulse is V-Tach. Where’s the crash cart?” Taeyong yelled.
Xiumin got there too with the crash cart, “Charge to 360. Jisoo move your hand. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
“Charge 300. Clear!”
Taeyeon ran over to them, pushed Xiumin and grabbed the paddles, “Move over. Charge 360. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
“I’ve got rhythm,” She looked at the monitor, “Damn it’s gone. Asystole! 1 amp of atropine.” Taeyeon started CPR.
“I did it already, it’s not helping.” Taeyong said.
“Do it anyways. And another amp of epi.” She ordered him.
You ran over, “Jinyoung gown me.”
“What the hell are you doing?” Taeyeon asked you.
“I’m gonna crack her chest.”
“What? No, she OD’d-”
“Then she’ll die anyways, chest tray.”
Taeyeon hesitantly removed her hand from Haru’s chest, “Alright let’s do it. Betadine.”
“10-blade!” You grabbed the scalpel and started cutting. You reached in and started massaging her heart. The heartbeat not coming back.
“Guys it’s not coming back,” Taeyong tried stopping you, “Time of death-”
“SHUT UP TAEYONG!” You yell at him, “1 more amp of epi. Charge to 20. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
You reached in again and massaged the heart, still not coming back, “Charge to 30. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
The heart rate went up. You looked at Taeyong. He looked at you and smiled in astonishment.
“Ok. You were right. You are beyond extraordinary at what you do,” Taeyong admitted.
Taeyeon walked over to Xiumin, “Alright, maybe she’s not so much of a sissy.”
Xiumin looked at you with wide eyes, “Damn, now that was badass.”

(Play Because I’m Stupid)
You and Taeyong ran and pushed the table as fast as you could through the hectic hallways, Jeon Wonwoo caught up to both of you.
“Cool an object through the chest?” Wonwoo asked with wide eyes.
“Doctor the patient’s in asystole, you need to resuscitate her,” Taeyong ordered you.
“Wonwoo I need you to hold the pole in place and don’t so much as move it,” You told him. You climbed on to bed and held your hands on the woman’s chest, you were hesitant to start resuscitating because the pole might move tearing her lungs and hitting her spine.
Jinyoung caught up to your bed.
“You,” Taeyong pointed, “push 5 of epi.”
Jinyoung shot him a dirty look before pushing the drugs into her body. The heartbeat had gone back to normal. The 4 of you slowed down and eventually stopped, the sounds of your breaths filled the conversationless void. The woman’s eyes opened in panic.
“Hey, it’s okay. My name is Dr. Taeyong, you’re at Heartstone Serenity Hospital. We’re gonna take care of you,” Taeyong broke the silence first, “Nurse guy, I need an x-ray and ultrasound of her heart stat. Get a CT scan to be safe too.”
Jinyoung left the scene and proceeded to get the scans.
“Can you tell me your name?” You asked her.
“Eu-Eun-Eunkyung. Kim Eunkyung.” She stuttered.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In OR 1 Jisoo and Jin were in surgery. A patient with internal bleeding. Jin sat down at the head of the operating table controlling the anesthesia, Jisoo started her surgery.
“Can you believe those Heartstone hotshots?” Jisoo asked, “10-blade.”
Shownu handed her the knife and she continued with her surgery.
“And that Chief of Surgery? Makes me want to puke,” Jin gagged.
“Dammit,” Jisoo cursed under her breath.
“What? What’s wrong?” Jin got up from his chair and looked over.
*beep beep beep beep beep beep*
“I can’t find the source of the bleed, there’s too much blood. Suction!” Jisoo’s hands moved as fast as she could, “Someone page me a doctor! NOW! Her blood pressure is going through the roof. Push 1 of atropine.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dr. Kim Taeyeon is still at the front of the ER looking for a surgery, she spots the paramedics roll in another patient and runs up to them.
“Goddammit, this patient’s already dead, give me a real patient,” Taeyeon groaned.
“Yes, but we need someone to call time of death,” The paramedics tell her.
“Time of death 9:02, now get me a real patient.”
Taeyeon spots Dr. Xiumin with a child, his head bleeding. She runs over to him.
Taeyeon claims the bed, “Let’s go Dr. Xiumin.” She pushes the cart off to OR 4.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jisoo’s patient was dying, dying fast.
“I can’t find the source of the bleed, there’s too much blood. WHERE’S MY SUCTION?” She yells.
The doors open and Yuta Nakamoto rushes to scrub in.
“Aw dammit, a Heartstone resident?” Jin groans.
*beep beep beep beep beep beep*
“Jin shut the fuck up, this is not the time for jokes. Heartstone doctor, scrub in and suction for me now!” Jisoo snapped.
“Doctor she’s in V-Fib,” Shownu told her.
“Hearstone, get over here now!” She ordered. Yuta ran over, Shownu handed him the defibrillator.
Yuta grabbed the paddles, “Charge 100. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
No change.
“Charge 200. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
No change.
“Charge 300. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
No change.
“Charge 360. Clear!”
*PA-THUNK*
*beeeeeeeeeeep*
Jisoo stopped fixing the patient, “Time of death, 9:52,” She threw her mask and surgical gloves in anger and left the OR.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taeyeon and Xiumin just started surgery. A child, a little girl, no more than 10 years old. Taeyeon started by stopping the brain bleed she had,
“Ok, patient has an acute subdural hematoma. I’m gonna start now. 10-blade.”
Irene handed her the scalpel. The surgery so far has gone good, however she just can’t find the source of the bleed.
“Did you see those Serenity showoffs in the ER,” Xiumin ask her.
“Yep.”
“I mean they hogged all the patients, thinking they’re all that.”
“Yeah.”
“They’ve probably killed all their patients by now-”
“DR. XIUMIN!” Taeyeon snapped, “Have you ever heard the phrase as hard as brain surgery?”
“Yes?”
“Well this is actually brain surgery, so if you can’t shut your mouth then get out of my OR!”
*beep beep beep beep beep beep*
“She’s in V-Fib, I need the defibrillator!” Xiumin ordered the scrub nurses.
“You can’t shock her, I have knives in her head.” Taeyeon stopped him.
*beeeeeeeeeep*
“Asystole!” Xiumin shouted.
Taeyeon quickly removed the instruments in the patient’s head. Xiumin started CPR. A minute passed. The heart isn’t coming back.
“Time of death 10:29,” Xiumin called it.
“She was just a kid…” Taeyeon mumbled under her breath.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play I Smile)
Today Heartstone Serenity Hospital were given 24 victims, 1 is still getting scans, and 23 people pronounced dead.
Taeyong stayed with your patient the whole time, she’s cracking jokes to him and smiling, completely oblivious about the pole through her chest. Your patient was moved to her own private room, you sat outside looking over her scans. You got a page.
*beep beep*
It was the Chief of surgery, he’s calling everyone to Eunkyung’s room. After a few minutes everyone was gathered in her room.
“Everyone, this is Eunkyung. She’s our last patient today. Let’s hope we have at least 1 survivor of the train crash today. Dr. Y/n, you’re responsible for this patient, how do you think we should proceed in removing the pole from her chest?” The Chief asked you.
Everyone looked towards you, you froze. You didn’t have a plan to remove the pole yet, “I apologize sir, I need a little more time.”
The Chief nodded, “That’s alright but we need her in surgery in about an hour, the longer we keep that pole in her, the larger the risk of infection.”
He left the room, the Heartstone doctors and Serenity doctors stared at each other, not in hatred but in disappointment. They’ve all failed today.
You excused yourself and went outside looking at the scans again. Everyone left one by one, Jisoo and Jin stayed with Eunkyung.
“Hey doctor,” It was Taeyong, “why can’t we remove it now?”
“We can remove it now, but don’t know if she’ll live.” You responded, “I’ve been looking at these scans for over 2 hours now. I see 2 ways we can approach it. We can either pull it out slowly and repair damage along the way, but that risks me hitting her spine and paralyzing her.”
“What’s the other approach?”
“We pull it out quickly, it won’t hit the spine but she’ll bleed out so much I don’t know if I can stop it. On top of that pulling it out quickly gives a greater chance of tearing her lungs.”
“So you’re saying in both scenarios, she’s screwed.”
“Yeah,” You looked towards Eunkyung’s room where Jisoo and Jin were laughing, “She might die in an hour and here she is cracking jokes to doctors.”
“CODE BLUE!” You heard Jisoo yell from Eunkyung’s room. You and Taeyong ran to her room.
“What the hell happened?” You frantically asked.
“We were just talking to her when she just coded,” Jin started rolling Eunkyung on her side. He then proceeded to do CPR on her.
Taeyong started paging all the doctors to come, everyone starting wheeling her to OR 3 once again.
The 4 of you started scrubbing in. The doors open as the rest of the doctors came pouring in, Heartstone and Serenity.
After all the doctors had scrubbed in, they stood at the OR table waiting for your diagnosis on how to perform the surgery. Everyone stared at you. Jin, Jisoo, Shownu, Irene, Taeyeon, Xiumin, Wonwoo, Yuta, and the Chief.
“What do we do doctor?” Taeyong asked.
Which one do you choose? “I don- I don’t know!” You yelled in frustration. You stood there with your head down, thinking about each approach.
The Chief spoke up, “Dr. Y/n she’s dy-”
“Sir! Please just let me think,” You raised your voice, you thought for a little bit more, then you made your decision, “I’m gonna need all hands, we’re going to remove it slowly, repair the damage along the way. Don’t hit the spine.”
Wonwoo, Yuta, and Taeyeon started off by pulling the pole out an inch. Irene handed you a bovie which you quickly stopped the bleeding. Shownu handed Jisoo lap pads, Jinyoung came in with more blood. Taeyong started fixing the damage to her lung. The Chief held the sternal saw sawing off the excess pole. This was gonna be a long surgery.
All of you worked as a team, it didn’t matter if the doctors were from Heartstone or not, what mattered was the life of this patient.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Play I Can’t Fall In Love Without You)
After a long 6 hours of surgery, she lived. She really lived. You were exhausted. You threw away the surgical gloves and mask and left the OR. The nurse gave you the post-op notes to write. The OR doors opens, Taeyong walked out, out of breath as well.
“How’s her BP?” You asked him.
“Normal, she’ll be fine,” He said. He was an annoying prick as a person, but as a doctor, damn, “you saved her.”
“What?”
“You saved her,” Taeyong told you.
“We all did,” You humbly said.
“Yeah but you made the right choice, I’m not that fond of Serenity doctor but you doctor, you’re a pretty good surgeon.”
“Pretty good? Pretty good isn’t enough,” You smirked at Taeyong. You both were in another staring contest. This time you stepped towards him, you put your mouth near his ear, “I’m an extraordinary surgeon Dr. Taeyong.”
You excused yourself.
“Hey doctor!” Taeyong called out, you turned your head, “It was a pleasure working with you today.”
You continued walking.

I’m Fine Thank You - Ladies Code
Exodus - Exo
Today was another slow day at Serenity Hospital. It was lunchtime, you sat with your fellow doctors. Not one peep came out of your mouths because none of you knew what to say. Tomorrow, Serenity Hospital and Heartstone Medical Center will merge together to become Heartstone Serenity Hospital. The rivalry between Heartstone and Serenity has been going on for about 8 decades now.
The idea of even being in the same operating room of the doctors of Heartstone makes you gag. But the worst, at least half of the doctors and nurses will be fired to make room for the merger. Today is the day where you find out if you’ll stay in or be cut off.
Dr. Wonwoo broke the silence, “How many residents do you think they’ll keep?”
“Stop worrying Wonwoo, you’ll be fine,” Jisoo assured.
Just then, Jinyoung came running to table. He took a moment to catch his breath, “I heard that most of the attending surgeons will stay but they’re firing half of the nurses and residents.”
“Fuck…” Wonwoo muttered under his breath.
“Who’s dumbass idea was it to merge the 2 hospitals who hate each other together?” Jin asked, “I refuse to work with those hotshots.”
“Agreed.” We all said in unison.
We began eating in silent, feeling uneasy about who might be staying and who might leave.
Sohn Shownu came running in the cafeteria out of breath, “They posted the list! They posted the list!”
Every doctor and nurse ran out of the cafeteria to the medical board looking at the list of doctors and nurses that were staying. Running as fast as you can, you reached the medical board first and scanned the list for your name. The list couldn’t have more than 25 names, after scanning through 10 names, you sighed of relief after seeing ‘Dr. y/l/n y/n - Cardiothoracics’.
You’re relief didn’t last long when all the other doctors and nurses rammed into you trying to find their names as well.
After a couple of minutes every doctor and nurse has seen the list. There were tears of joy and sadness everywhere. You started looking for your friends. You found Jin and Jisoo right away after the sight of both of them awkwardly dancing and celebrating they were on the list. Jinyoung and Shownu were found embracing each other. God these kids are so weird.
Strolling down the hallway you finally found Wonwoo, crying.
“I thought I saw your name on the list,” You were confused.
“I saw my name but it’s strange,” Wonwoo sniffled in confusement, “I don’t understand why so many exceptional residents were cut off and I, an average 5th year resident made it. Somehow I feel as if I don’t deserve it.”
“Dr. Jeon Wonwoo, don’t you ever say that about yourself again. The world is going to knock you around plenty. You don’t need to be doing it to yourself,” You scolded him.
~~~~~~~~ The Next Day ~~~~~~~~~
Your pager woke you up in after getting 2 hours of sleep in the on call room. Today’s the day the merger’s finally happening. As you got out of bed, you took a look at the page you got, Jisoo paged you to come to the front of the hospital.
When you got there, the sight made you almost vomit. Construction workers were adding “Heartstone” to the hospital sign.
“Oh god, I’m gonna puke,” You gagged.
Jinyoung grabbed your shoulders, “It doesn’t stop here,” he turns you around to the sight of Hearstone doctors and nurses.
“I have to perform surgery with these asses?” You were livid.
“Also did you see the new Chief of surgery?” Jisoo asked, “the true definition of Mr. Pretentious”
“It also seems I have another competitor for Chief Resident too, someone named Nakamoto Yuta?” Wonwoo scoffed.
“I heard there’s another scrub nurse as well. I liked it when I was the favorite scrub nurse.” Shownu pouted.
Dr. Kim Seokjin came up to us, “What the hell are you guys doing? Yes those Heartstone doctors think they own this place but we have patients to serve. If you guys think you’re better doctors than them, then go and treat your patients.”
We all left and went to the ward. Jin is a person we all pick on because he’s so useless, but he sure is a damn good doctor.
Walking into the ER you decided to treat a little girl named Haru. You always liked treating kids.
You greeted her parent, “Hello guys I’m Dr. y/l/n y/n. So what does your child need today?”
“Oh we told that doctor over there already, she’s been having these pains on her back,” Her mother informed you.
“You already told a doctor?” You asked.
“Yeah that’s me,” it was a man’s voice, not one you recognized which could only mean one thing. You turned around to see a doctor from Heartstone. “Your daughter is just experiencing some growing pains, perfectly normal at her age”
“Thank you doctor,” Haru’s father shook the doctor’s hand. You scoffed at the doctor, he looked at you and just scoffed back, you went to find another patient.
Both of you seem to be in a race seeing who can treat more patients. Every time you treated a patient you walked passed him and you both glared into each other’s eyes. Every time he treated a patient he walked past you and very discreetly coughed the number of patients he treated. What an asshole.
After a couple of hours the ER was near empty and the remaining patients were in the process of being treated.
You both were on opposite sides of the room, he glared at you. You could feel the hatred in his eyes, of course none of the Heartstone doctors wanted this merger too. He started walking towards you, when he reached you he went and stood by your side. Both of you stood there in silence with this indescribable tension between you.
He was the first to talk, “So doctor, how many did you get to treat today?”
“10” You hesitantly responded.
The doctor turned his body and came closer to you, too close. You turned around as well and found yourselves in a staring contest, you wanted to scold yourself for thinking that this doctor was so good looking. He then proceed to show a cocky smirk before his mouth came towards your ear.
He whispered, “12. Sorry doctor, I guess you just weren’t fast enough.” You lightly pushed him away.
“Are all Heartstone doctors douchebags like you?’ You cocked a smirk back at him.
“You shouldn’t call me names doctor,” The man looks down at your nametag, “y/n, we might work together soon.”
“I’d rather set myself on fire doctor,” You looked at his name tag, “Taeyong”
Before he could fire back with some sarcastic comment, the ER doors opened with force. Paramedics were rushing in with injured people.
“There was a train crash, multiple casualties and injuries.” One of the paramedics informed you. Doctors came rushing into the ER claiming a person to treat.
Dr. Lee Taeyong seems to be giving orders to the doctors, he’s probably a trauma surgeon. Each doctor seems to be getting into pairs for 1 patient. The Heartstone doctors and Serenity doctors still keeping clear of each other. You looked around and found a patient you were kind of eager to treat, an object through her chest. You ran to the bed and claimed the patient, at the same time you saw him grab it too. Shit. Lee Taeyong grabbed this patient too.
Both of you stared at each other again, waiting for the other person to let go and find another patient until the woman started flatlining. You didn’t care anymore, even though you so desperately don’t want to work with Heartstone doctors, especially this one, you are still a doctor, an exceptional one at that. Taeyong probably had the same thought, you both started wheeling the woman to OR room 3.
