Writing Tip June 4th
A list of body language phrases.
I’ve included a very comprehensive list, organized by the type of body movement, hand and arm movements, facial expressions etc. In some cases, a phrase fits more than one heading, so it may appear twice. Possible emotions are given after each BL phrase unless the emotion is indicated within the phrase. (They are underlined for emphasis, not due to a hyperlink.)
Note: I’ve included a few body postures and body conditions as they are non-verbal testimony to the character’s physical condition.
Have fun and generate your own ideas.:-)

Writing Body Language
How to Improve your writing
This is something that happens every day in your life. A shift of your eyebrow in skepticism, or the way your lip may twitch to a half smile cause you’re trying not to laugh. These behaviors are vital for writing in character, because not only do the allow you to visually see what is happening but it is also reaffirming whatever emotion your character is showing.
So why should you write it?
Much of human communication is non-verbal which means you need to also translate this non-verbal reaction in a post. It allows you to greatly enhance the emotions of another character and always another person to ‘visually’ see how they feel in a post. Most of all, this will add depth and volume to your post to make it feel more real. IT will make your character feel like a human instead of just another fictional person you look at from above.
Below you will find a list different type of emotions and what sort of body language can be exhibited to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three ways to accent an action.
When writing about emotions, there are different ways to verbally write them out. Each one is unique in their own way, allowing you to show more about the emotion.
Emphasize the Emotion. But doing this, you are expressing both the emotion and the body language. We’ll use a simple example. It’s short and simple yet you can sense he is happy. John felt so happy that he was humming a tune while walking down the hall.
Complicate the Emotion. Sometimes, even when you are feeling one emotion, deep down rooted underneath the facade of it all, there is actually an underlining emotion they feel. This is something you have to truly express otherwise no one will know. John felt so happy that he was humming a tune while walking down the hall. However, it was obvious by the way his nose crinkled that he was disgusted by the actions beforehand. Instead, John covered it up by appearing pleased today.
Contradict the Emotion. This is a little different than complicate. Contradicting means that you are claiming one thing when in fact its the other. In many ways, this has a variety of uses, from inner depth of the truth to what you see in person, or someone creating a wall. It could be considered a lie, but when is anything that easy? John felt so happy that he was humming a tune while walking down the hall. In truth, once he was in the classroom, his shoulders slumped and a pout crossed his lips when no one was around, showing just how displeased he was with the situation.
Remember that you do not always have to contradict or complicate anything. Sometimes all you need to do is emphasize and that will be just fine. You don’t always have to have an underlining complicated for an emotion to make it more enhanced.
Do be afraid to use the Thesaurus to also improve an emotion. Such things as “happy” is a nice emotional word, but think of how much more powerful it is when you heard some is “overjoyed” or “content.” She how these emotions matched up with a body language can give two different styles of happiness? Mix and match to find what works best for your character at the time.
More In Depth Information
What I’ve stated above is more of a simplistic overview. IF you truly want to improve yourself, go to this

How to Write Smut: Permission
Hi folks! This is going to be the first in a series of posts I plan on making about the whole art of writing smut. Although I write my smut solely within fanfiction, and I know most of my readers/mutuals are also into it for fanfic, this is all advice I have for writing smut (also known as “erotica”) outside of that genre as well.
Be advised that I will mention potentially triggering topics centering around sex and sexuality and gender. Sometimes race and ability will also come up. I intend to handle these topics as sensitively as possible and try to do my research where I am ignorant, but I also beg your patience. If I’m a dumbass or read the wrong research, I’m happy to make corrections. I want to be helpful and not harmful, and my goal is talk about these things in healthy ways. I want to focus upon consensual and adult smut only. Technical terms as well as porny terms will happen frequently. As it says on the tin: I have a filthy and smart mouth. 18+ only.
So, if you do not want to read this or future posts in this series, please add “how to write smut” to your tag blacklist or filters. :)
How to Write Smut Without Wanting to Die of Embarrassment: It’s About Permission
Here you are, dear writer, reading this post and some of y’all are already just burning in your seats and clutching your pearls thinking oh my god I can’t believe I’m doing this, someone’s gonna read over my shoulder let me disappear now. And some of you are just nodding and thinking, yeah yeah whatever get to it, this is no big deal. This post is actually for both of you types of folks.
I don’t have to tell a lot of you that western society has a lot of fucked-up notions about sex and sexuality that hasn’t stayed in its filthy little niche in the world, but spread its grubby mitts everywhere. The fact that some of y’all are outside of the United States of Puritanical America and blushing like someone saw your frilly knickers is proof enough. Folks who have thrown the middle finger at all of that and come out on top (heheh) have fought some hard-won battles with all that, and my hats are off to you. Conquered, right?

ways to describe facial expressions in writing
humans can obviously talk to communicate, but you have to remember that, naturally, we use our face to show expressions as well.
EYES
- widened in surprise/shock, filled with confusion/hurt
- narrowed into a glare
- filled with tears
- looking down at the ground defeatedly
- gleaming with mischief
- shining with hope/determination
- burning with hate
- emotionless stare
EYEBROWS
- raised in surprise
- furrowed in confusion/thought/worry
- one eyebrow perked to show attitude
NOSE
- scrunched in digust
- blushing with embarrassment
- lifted higher = more confidence/bigger ego
- aimed lower = less confident/weak
MOUTH
- in a pout = upset
- gaping with shock/confusion
- lips shaking from trying to hold back tears
- pursed in thought
- pulled into a smirk
- widened into a grin
PUTTING THEM TOGETHER
- Eyes wide and mouth gaping, they felt numb with shock.
- They felt their face begin to burn as they shifted their gaze to the ground.
- They pursed their lips as they concentrated, brow furrowing.
- Their eyes gleamed with mischief as they smirked.
using facial expressions is very useful in writing. simply using dialogue to express your characters’ emotions and thoughts will lose your audience’s attention and interest.
keep these in mind while writing!

Pro-Writing Tips
Hey all.
So, I don’t normally do this, ‘cause, well, I just don’t, but sometimes, you’re out and about reading some glorious smutty fanfic (as you do) and the action is happily simmering along, things are getting slippery and then…
The thesaurus truck comes barreling into the damn thing, getting into a pile up with the I’ve-never-had-sex-before mini van, the-I-can’t-call-a-cock-a-cock roadster, and the useless-chapter-break-of-doom SUV.
So, let’s sit back, and chat a moment about writing fucking HOT sex. Panty-melting, oh my god, I’m going to hell just for reading this SEX.
Lesson 1: You do not need to have done whatever the hell it is you are writing about to write it well. In addition to sex, I write shape-shifting dragon knights. Shockingly enough, not only have I not done more than half of the sex I write (not being physically equipped for it) I also don’t use magic to morph into dragons. Imagination can take you pretty much anywhere, but, just like with how to write a good flying scene, it’ll often need some help.
That said, everything in the universe is on Google, so RESEARCH. Which does not mean go read/watch a lot of porn. (It doesn’t mean don’t go do that, whatever floats your boat, just for research purposes, this isn’t where you want to go.) Look for people talking about real life experiences, pay attention.
Pictures are your friend. Again, you’re probably not looking for porn here, because a lot of porn is shot to look good, not feel good. So, if you’re looking at a reference picture, try to imagine if those poses would feel good. If you can’t imagine getting into that pose on your own and not hurting yourself, I can promise it won’t be fun with someone else.
(Pro Tip: Daz 3D, it’s free 3d rendering software. Why is this useful? Along with the software comes the base characters. They’re male and female and entirely pose-able. Want to see if that pose you want to do works? Model it. You’ll rapidly get a feel for things like, no one on earth has a dick long enough to make this happen/this dude has an anti-gravity charm or three arms, because this just isn’t possible with just two, and the like if you can see what you’re trying to describe.)
Lesson 2: Language choice. There’s a saying among writers, that if you’re not comfortable having your grandma read it, don’t write it, because you’ll muck it up.
Nowhere is this more clear when what had been a happily churning along story turns into near-synonym salad as the author attempts to cover the fact that they’re blushing while they type with an onslaught of words that appear nowhere else in the story, and shouldn’t be here, either.
There’s a place for flowery, synonym heavy poetic prose. There’s even a place for it in a sex scene, assuming the rest of the story is written that way. If, however, you had a good fifty pages of tight, fairly stream of thought writing, and suddenly, when your characters round second base the adverbs start creeping into every sentence and there’s all of these heavy words that do not mean what you think they do. (Seriously, put the thesaurus down. I can almost promise you that if you are looking for synonyms, you are not going to pick the one that works in the sentence you’re going to plop it into. Just use the original word. Trust me, it works better. Really. Yes, I can tell when you went and grabbed the thesaurus and looked up something you thought meant what your original word did. It’s close, but not right. If you want to use the thesaurus, use it when you’re not writing to build your vocabulary, so that when your writing your new words are the original ones you intended to put into the sentence. They’ll work MUCH better.)
If you are uncomfortable with writing sex, stop. Fade to black. There is nothing wrong with NOT writing smut. You do not have to churn out slippery friction if it makes you uncomfortable, and if you can’t call a dick a dick (or whatever it is your character would call it) then put the keyboard down, back away, go do something else, and fade to black.
(Bonus tip: no man in the history of maleness has ever called his cum essence, if you are writing a male pov, take the time to figure out what your boy calls his jizz, and then use that, or write around it. No one has ever read, “And with a last, hard thrust Bob pulsed into Sally, shuddering in bliss,” and thought, “I wonder if he actually got off? No essence in that sentence.”)
Lesson Three: Oh hell no! Not there! No fading to black THERE!
Readus-Interruptus.
Okay, this is the exception to rule two. Do not write half of a sex scene, get your readers hot and bothered, and then just stop.
And if you write half of a sex scene, and then stop in the middle of it, giving your readers terminal blue balls, and then start the fucker over again right where you left off in the “next chapter…”
No, just NO!  Do NOT DO THAT!
Chapters 101. You are not done the chapter until you have wrapped up whatever plot point you were working on is.
Let’s back up further. Stories 101: Your story has an overarching plot line. Each chapter is supposed to be a unit of story that deals with one bit of said line, pushing the greater arc forward. Chapters break when whatever that unit is, is done.
So, if you’re characters are happily fucking away, and then the chapter just stops, you are killing your story.
Now, if you’ve got an interruption, a cock block, if one character finishes whatever the hell it was they were trying to do (character A climaxes, chapter ends, next chapter starts mid-coitus with character B’s POV,), there’s some emotional arc that wraps up mid-fuck, whatever. That’s fine. Go for it. Tension is your friend, build that fucker up.
But each chapter should have a climax that wraps that little bit of plot up, and if you are writing a sex scene, well the climax should be pretty obvious, and that’s when everyone is slippery and glowing.
Lesson Four: If lube is sticky, put the damn stuff down, and use spit. Sticky is the exact opposite of what lube is supposed to be, and at this point I’ve seen four separate fics describe it as sticky. BY ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY DO NOT USE STICKY LUBE!!! You will get hurt if you use sticky lube.
All righty, there’s four tips for hot sex scenes. Go forth and give literal and metaphorical boners to all of the glorious people out there in reader land!

How I Taught Myself to Write Smut
So this is something I’ve talked about with a couple of friends and decided why not make a post about.
This is the method that I used when I was starting out writing smut and it felt awkward and weird to write.
I just call it sentence expansion.
I started with the bare bones a to b sentence, what it is happening:
They walked down the hall to the bedroom
Add a little bit of emotion:
They walked eagerly down the hall
Now better show that emotion/tweak it so that people feel what they feel:
They hurried down the hall hand in hand, and Merlin brought Eggsy’s hand to his lips as the stumbled along, not watching where they stepped.
Then you need to add the heat so to speak:
They hurried down the hall, desperate to reach the bedroom. Merlin was so hungry for Eggsy that when he brought their joined hands to his mouth, what was supposed to be a kiss was almost a bite, a claim. Eggsy gasped as they stumbled along, feet moving from muscle memory because they were too busy touching, kissing to pay attention to where they stepped.
A slightly more graphic example
bare bones:
He sucked his husband’s cock
Add a little emotion:
Phil smiled as he sunk to his knees to suck Clint’s cock
Better show the emotion:
Phil loved the feel of Clint’s skin and had missed with how long they had been apart. He smiled as he sank to his knees to suck Clint’s cock. He made sure to hide the wince as his bad knee hit the ground a little wrong; he didn’t want Clint to notice and stop what he was about to do, what he had been dreaming about.
Give that last push:
Phil laid a hand on the scar on Clint’s ribs; he had missed this skin, the texture, the heat so much while they had been apart for too fucking long. He ran his nose along Clint’s jaw and smiled as he sank to his knees. Clint had already undone the buttons of his jeans and Phil pushed them all the way down. He hid the wince caused by the ache in his bad knee in the curve of Clint’s hip. If Clint had seen it he would have paused what was happening, checked on him, and he didn’t want that to happen. Too many dreams of this moment had happened and he wanted the reality of it. Phil rested a hand around the base of Clint’s cock and opened his mouth and swallowed around the length, not going all the way down, just letting the weight and warmth rest on his tongue.
So there you have it how I taught myself to write smut, and it is a system that I still sometimes use if a scene just isn’t working the way I want it to.
Hope this might help someone.

10 Tips for Writing (Good) Smut
so. let’s do this.
About a year ago, I had to read a book for my school’s summer reading assignment called How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster. It’s not a bad book, pretty decent actually, but there was this one chapter about sex scenes in literature. And one of the first sentences was along the lines of “writing sex is boring.”
and I did a double-take. Bc in my experience, that is absolutely not the case, and if you do find yourself bored while writing smut, then you’re not doing it right. See, Thomas’s main argument was that there’s only so many ways you can write sex scenes, because there’s only so many sex acts you can choose from. (My boy Thomas is clearly a vanilla dude, but let’s not hold that against him.)
But one of the most important things to keep in mind while writing smut is that it’s not necessarily just about the act itself. So while Thomas is right that there are limits as to how many ways ppl can have sex, he failed to realize that writing sex is about a LOT more than that. And I’m gonna prove it to you.

Words to replace said, except this actually helps
I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

Got7 as college students:
Mark: Gamer boy who either never leaves his room or is never there in the first place. Probably a STEM major who hangs out with mostly other STEM majors. Has a matching tattoo with frat boy! Bambam
Jaebeom: Emo art hoe whose also good at sports, gets invited to all the parties but rarely goes. Artsy aesthetics on Instagram, has many text messages from women, but only replies to a few people. Definitely has a Soundcloud to promote his music.
Jackson: Athletic scholarship, will add you to his server on Discord, and is friends with the majority of students on campus.
Jinyoung: classy theatre major whose done with his friends, highly focused on his schoolwork, and would probably leave you on read.
Youngjae: Chaotic music major who posts dog and other aesthetic pictures. Sometimes posts memes on Twitter, but spends more time hitting the books or binge-watching his favorite shows.
Bambam: Frat boy who is actually smart, but plays dumb for fun. Shows up to class in fashionable clothing, takes notes well, and aces his assignments. Has matching tattoos based on inside jokes with Mark
Yugyeom: Performance Arts student who procrastinates his assignments until the last minute. Probably the type that asks Bambam for notes. Definitely sleeps in class.
a/n: finally got this published y’all
