hey, have you ever watched house md? it was the first piece of media where I really understood how debilitating chronic pain actually is!! and how it affects all parts of that person’s life and relationships, and esp bc he’s an addict, that line between him increasing his pain meds bc he’s genuinely just grown a tolerance to the meds and him increasing his meds bc his addiction is getting worse is chef’s kiss

And there’s even this bit where he has like shoulder pain and stuff bc he uses his cane improperly, and people tell him to use it properly, and get a more supportive one, and he’s just like “my cane >:|”

yesss!!! i loovvee house. i can remember watching house md back when i was an undiagnosed disabled little kid and house as a character meant so much to me. i didnt know what chronic pain was back then but thats what i was experiencing and house was the only place i saw that experience being depicted. it made me feel a little better to have at least one other person who understood what i was going through even when i didnt totally understand it. even if that person was a fictional character. representation matters <3 (talking about the most miserable character ever written btw)

his addiction is a really good part of his character. chronic pain is really insidious and i think its hard to imagine unless you go through it yourself how much it effects Everything. i cant tell you how many times ive snapped at people just because i was pain cranky. ill get in these cycles where all i want, the one and only thing i can think of, is for the pain to stop. id do anything for it to stop. we see house do this mutiple times. taking on dangerous or experimental treatments unconcerned about the effects to his health, because maybe itll make it stop. maybe hell get some relief. his painkillers included in this. there are times when he tries to get clean, or try other methods for pain relief. but he always comes back to the drugs. the drugs work. the drugs are comforting. but its a double edged sword. the more he takes the more his tolerance builds up the more he needs to get relief, and the worse the pain is when hes off his painkillers. a vicious cycle with no good answer. even if he was able to quit the painkillers completely, hed still be in pain.

i think his cane bit is almost a form of bodily autonomy and mayybe a little side of self harm. houses chronic pain comes from a surgery that saved his life but left him disabled and in constant pain. but more importantly, he did not consent to this surgery. EXPLICITLY said ‘dont do this to me’ and had his wishes overruled. hes using his cane wrong and its hurting him and probably making his condition worse, but its *his decision*. he didnt have a choice in what was done to his body, but he has a choice in what he does to it now. if he wants to hurt himself thats his right. its a little way for him to have control over his body and what was done to him.
