How To Build A World

I have been trying to calculate the exact equation to create a world by gathering some basic categories. This is purely for fun and a bit of a creative project.

This is just a simple post to help out anyone who is building there own little world and need a list of basic elements needed to making their world more realistic. This is also probably a incomplete list, but it is what I have so far.

Origin- your story of how that world came to be, how it’s people came to be, how everything came to be.

Landscape- Draw a map. Be sure to include from biggest to small. Start with the planet, if not the universe, and shrink down to the continents inhabiting your world’s surface. You can shrink more, but its good to have the general first.

Religion- Is there specific religions your world believes in? Is there different religion among races? Describe how races worship whatever they worship.

Races- What type of people live in your world?

History- Tell us the events that has happened in the past of your world.

Military- What type of military does your world have? Is there specific tactics one place does that the other does not?

Government- Who’s in charge? Who was in charge? What type of system does your world have?

Healthcare- Is there a place for medicine? How do they handle illnesses? General hospital-like information.

Death- (This is a broad title, but I couldn’t think of a better one.) How does your world deal with death? Do they have funerals, do they bury the dead, put them in tombs, burn them, other means? Not to be confused with the Supernatural category.

Views- What do your races in your world believe in? This category is similar to religion, but its broader. This one includes their views on different races, age views, sexual orientation, interbreeding, ect.

Currency- What kind of system of money does your world use? Gold coins, bottle caps, whatever your hearts desire on things.

Architecture- What kind of building types would we see?

Education- How would your races learn? Are there colleges around?

Nourishments and Beverages- Food and drinks found in your world.

Wildlife- What type of animals could you find in your world? This doesn’t have to be just wild animals, think of pets and monsters perhaps.

Supernatural- (another category I didn’t know what to call) By means of death, where does one’s soul go? Are there ghosts in your world? Zombies perhaps? Maybe immortality can go into this category as well. Is there vampires and werewolves?

Courtships- How does marriage work in your world? Do races get married? Is there a specific ceremony for each race? How does your world deal with lust and love?

Workforce- Are there shops where your races can buy stuff? Are there merchants, markets, factories. Similar to Industry.

Industry- What type of products does your world create?

Transportation- How does your races travel? Are there cars, ships, perhaps horses? How do they get from one place to another?

Language- races should be able to have named languages. What do they speak in?

Culture- This category is referring to the arts of the races. Do they do certain things that other races do not? Have certain music types?

Crime- What’s considered a crime?

Residence- Homesteads for your races.

Attributes- What kind of things are your world’s races are known for? Are some experts in stealth? It’s whatever you want it to be.

That’s all I have to say so far. I believe it is a good list for people who need ideas of how to make your world more real. Ask yourself if you want a fantasy world or a more realistic world. When to step back and when to approach

Now imagine that you walk along the boulevard in a clear autumn day. One intersection in front of you there is a gentleman, dressed in a navy blue suit. It is impossible to be able to see the jewel on his left hand. If you walk faster and get closer (a distance of about 10 meters from him), you may notice that he wears a ring, but you won't be able to see his bright red stone or the monogram on top. Sneak near with a magnifying glass in hand and - if he doesn't call the police - you'll learn the name of the university where he graduated, his specialty, year of graduation and possibly university's emblem. In this case you had guessed correctly that you would learn more if you look closely. Now imagine you're watching a French painting from the 19th century in Seurat style. If you stand 10 steps away you can see men with silk hats, women in long dresses, children, dogs, sparkling water. Come closer and you'll see 10 000 colored dashes, dots and battery icons. If you thrust nose in the canvas, you'll appreciate the complexity and the mania of the art, but only from a distance you can see the displayed scene on the painting. On the contrary of your experiment with the gentleman on the boulevard: the more the details fall apart the more you wish you had kept distance. Which of the two ways nature reveals itself better? Actually in both. Almost every time scientists look more closely at a natural phenomenon or any occupant of the space, an animal, a plant or a star, they need to consider whether the whole picture - that is received once a person took a few steps back - is more useful or not even from the near look. But there is a third way, a sort of hybrid between the both that the nearest look gives you more facts, but additional facts confuse you more. The desire to pull back is strong, but equally strong is the desire to move on.
