Why does Kyman work?
Kyman works because Cartman’s attention-seeking behavior and need for attention are validated by Kyle. Cartman’s behavior is often ignored by other characters. He’s also told to stop talking to them (this often happens with Tolkien) when Cartman provokes them or suggests a dangerous or incorrect idea, but Kyle doesn’t always reply like this. He replies rather quickly to the provoking—with other insults or solutions that should stop Cartman’s ideas. Kyle feeds into Cartman’s need for constant attention.
In the episode where Kyle wants to become a basketball player (S09E01, “Mr. Garrison’s Fancy New Vagina”), but can’t because of his physique, Kyle is really sad about it. Of course, Cartman pokes fun at him, though the boy is too sad or insecure, so he tells him he’s right—which defeats the whole purpose of Cartman ripping on Kyle: to receive some kind of attention.
This also happens in the episode “Smug Alert!” (S10E02), where Kyle has to leave South Park and go live in San Francisco. Cartman is stoked about it since he doesn’t want to have him around, and when Stan tells him he’ll regret not having someone to make fun of, Eric tells him he can make fun of Butters and doesn’t need Kyle. Later in the episode, though, we can see that Butters’ sweet personality and lack of response don’t give the same satisfaction to Cartman, since he clearly prefers having someone to respond back—to actually care about the things said. This leads Eric to bring Kyle back into South Park.
But we knew that already, didn’t we? Kyle works for Cartman. Now let’s see why Cartman works for Kyle.
Kyle is one of the characters with a strong moral compass. He wants to do right by society and people—sometimes even going to certain lengths to achieve what he wants. We also have Stan for that role in the show, but Kyle, unlike Stan, is more prominent about it when Cartman is involved.
Kyle has a strong sense of what’s right and what’s wrong (like Wendy, I might say—that’s why Stan is close to both of them, but that’s for another time). That’s why he contrasts Eric so much. He knows he’s right about certain stuff and wants to make his voice heard, but he’s also scared of losing that sense of control over his ‘right’ opinions. Sure, he’s strongly opinionated on the outside, though on the inside he might have some doubts about what’s wrong and what’s right, and he doesn’t let himself show that to other people.
For example, he constantly calls out Cartman when the boy makes fun of his religion and tells him to stop attacking his people. In various episodes, though, under some pressure, Kyle isn’t sure about his religion anymore. Nonetheless, he keeps telling Cartman to stop making fun of his people, and soon regains his sense of religion and faith again. For Kyle, Cartman is the ‘wrong.’ Kyle has to defeat his wrongdoing, his manipulation, and all of his bad actions. Cartman’s wrongness makes Kyle feel like he’s a good person.
In the episode “Crack Baby Athletic Association” (S15E05), we can clearly see that. Kyle finds out Cartman uses crack babies to make videos online of them playing basketball with a ball made of crack, and of course, makes money. At first, he’s wronged by that. When he finds out how much money Cartman made with the company, though, Kyle decides to become a part of it. He convinces himself that someone is going to do it anyway and that if he’s part of the process, he can make things at least a little bit better for the babies.
During the episode, Kyle constantly finds himself talking to Stan and convincing him that it’s actually a good thing that he’s in the process, but clearly, he’s trying to convince himself. Stan tells him he sounds just like Cartman, which motivates Kyle to help the crack babies by building them an orphanage. He shares the idea with Cartman, and the boy immediately likes it, since it’s a way of not giving any money to the crack babies yet still looking like they care in front of other people.
By Kyle’s reaction, we can see he didn’t expect the boy to like it so much and seems worried about it. At the end of the episode, they lose the company, and Kyle is upset by the fact they didn’t manage to build the orphanage and tells Stan. Kyle tells him that sure, he’s angry they lost the company, but he’s angrier they didn’t get to help those babies—which might be true, but it seems weird he wanted to clarify that.
He keeps clarifying and convincing people—and himself—that he’s doing the right thing, that he’s not like Cartman. He needs Cartman as a comparison tool.
When I say “Kyman works,” I don’t mean their relationship isn’t toxic. I mean that they’ll always be friends for these reasons. They need each other to know they’ll always have someone to rely on for validation for their insecurities.

A year ago I uploaded the final chapter of FITYMI. I absolutely loved writing every part of it, and I’m so glad to see that it’s loved. I wanted to pay homage to it with an animatic, so here it is! Thank you for the love!
It is also uploaded to YouTube here.

I'm incredibly and huge on wholesome kyman, so... yeah hehehehe I had so much fun making this for so many reasons!! 🥰🥰🥰 I do love a cute au where Cartman is really proud and happy of getting what he wanted. And of course I like an obsessed, smitten Kyle, so...
I'm a bit behind on twitter (as usual) when it comes to posting but I wanted to upload this one asap since it's rather timely, with the new year and all that, but a lot of other stuff should follow soon, including some big drops of various sketches and doodles, general SP and kyman. Here is, also, the full picture without the insta-like framing:
I'm melting guys srsly ugh
