your eyes met jay’s as you stepped forward, your unbreaking gaze conveying words beyond what you had the time to say. twenty-four hours, the news had said. twenty-four hours to say goodbye to everyone you’d known, everyone you’d loved. twenty-four hours before you’d leave the life you’d always known for good.

your fingers curled into jay’s, the familiar position calming your quickening heartbeat.

“i’m scared, jay,” you murmured, your voice coming out as no more than a terrified whisper. his eyes were full of pain as he pulled you closer to him, your body shaking.

“i know, baby, i know,” he said, and you knew he was just as frightened as you were from the slight shake in his normally confident tone. who wouldn’t be, knowing their death awaited them?

it was certainly less than twenty-four hours now, you knew. it’d been so long since the broadcast that shook your world, yet it was much too little. now, it was likely you only had a few moments left. tears sprung to the corners of your eyes and slid down your cheeks, salty and cold. you could hear jay’s heartbeat against your ear, grounding you, keeping you sane.

“i love you, more than you will ever know,” you sobbed. “i don’t want to leave like this.”

he pulled you even closer, your tears intertwining in the cruelest twist of fate.

“yn, i will love you in every life, wherever we might end up. please, don’t cry, don’t be afraid. i’m right here.”

all around, you could see others stepping outside to enjoy their last breath of fresh air, of life. it should’ve been a normal day, the sun shining and the people hurrying to their typical jobs. it should’ve been a normal day, but fate is cruel, and you knew you couldn’t escape what had been handed to you.

all you could do was hold on to those you loved, so tightly that you wouldn’t lose them even if you were torn to shreds. you gripped jay’s arm tighter at the thought, placing a kiss on his smooth lips.

you furthered the kiss, threading your fingers through his hair. your arms threw themselves around his shoulders, your bodies entangled eternally.

you could taste the saltiness of your mixed tears through the kiss, yet you did not dare to break away. you could feel the pure love emanating off of him, the one calming presence in the cruel darkness around you.

your embrace so tight you felt your very beings intertwining, you kissed him as passionately as you could, love and pain bleeding into your heart. jay, your lover, your soulmate, your one and only. what an honor, to die by his side.
