#Dwarrowtober - Day 2: Forge
Day two of dwarrowtober finds us in the extensive forges of Ered Luin. Stírna is no stranger to the forge. In the Black Land, she had an unwilling hand in creating hideous, twisted weapons and armor for the orc armies of Sauron. After finding her freedom, she finds joy for the first time in the fires of the forge. Now, however, she refines precious metals to create items of beauty rather than instruments of death. Gifts instead of swords.

#Dwarrowtober - Day 1: Wandering
@mrkida-art ‘s Dwarrowtober challenge got me inspired to hop back on my Stout-Axe dwarrowdam burglar, Stírna.
She is not one of the longbeards descended drum Durin, but instead one of Drása’s Folk from the Khirvísa clan of Mordor. Her people fell long ago to greed sparked by one of the seven dwarven rings of Sauron. She was born into thralldom and grew up in the Black Land, only managing to claw her way to freedom during the chaos of Gollum’s escape from Barad Dur. Eventually, she found her way to Ered Luin…
I’m no artist and I’m a rusty writer, but I hope y’all enjoy a few Lord of the Rings Online screenshots. If you’ve never played the game, I highly recommend it. <3

on self-inserts, cliches, and writing for fun
I get asked a lot about how to write interesting and unique characters and how to avoid the “dreaded” self-inserts and Mary Sues. Obviously, writing unique OCs is rewarding in its own way, but it’s definitely not the only way to enjoy writing, especially if your main goal with writing is to have fun. Might be hypocritical for a prompt blog to argue this, but so-called self-inserts, cliches, and Mary Sues are fun to write, actually. In fact, allowing myself to be “uncreative” helped me redevelop my love for writing and break through my years-long writing block.
(ruminations on how I learned to enjoy writing again, some advice, and backstory under the cut cause hoo boy y’all didn’t sign up for this)

i know it’s been said before, but it bears repeating: a big, big part of maintaining your confidence & self esteem as a creator is fully embracing the concept of “you don’t have to be good like them. you can be good like you.”
for example, i’m not someone who’s particularly good at coming up with complex, elaborate plots or incredibly unique ideas. it’s just not how i choose to write. and it would be easy for me to look at someone with an elaborate, super unique plot & decide that because i don’t write like that, i’m not a good writer. after all, unique plots are good, and my writing lacks those, so my writing must not be good, right? well, no, actually. i just have different strengths, like taking a simple premise & digging super deep into its emotional depths. that’s what i do well & it isn’t any better or worse than people who do elaborate world building or come up with really creative and unexpected plots.
your writing is never going to be all things to all people. it just isn’t. inevitably, you’ll have to make creative choices that favor certain aspects of writing over others. there is truly no getting around that & it’s honestly a good thing, because it means you’ve developed your own style. but you’ll always encounter other creators who posses strengths that you don’t. it doesn’t mean one is better than the other or that your writing isn’t good enough.
comparing yourself like that would be like taking a piece of pizza & a cupcake & going “oh no, that cupcake is so sweet & my pizza isn’t sweet at all.” or “gosh, the garlic crust on that pizza is delicious and my cupcake doesn’t have ANY garlic.” obviously your pizza isn’t sweet. obviously your cupcake doesn’t have garlic. a food can’t have every single delicious flavor at once. the cupcake is good like a cupcake. the pizza is good like a pizza. so you don’t have to be good like them. you can be good like you.

Greetings. I’m Ash (she/they).
I’m a hedonistic little gremlin who writes whatever it is I want to read. I specialize in disgustingly self-inserty OCs. My fandom interests are endless and as changing as the wind. If you see something you like, you’re welcome to stay and hang out.

Your OC’s Backstory: Emotion Edition
It is on, everyone. The newest edition of Backstory Weeks is about to start. This time, an all new theme. In the coming weeks, we’ll look at how core emotions have shaped our OC’s pasts, how they deal (or dealt) with feelings and what makes them them.
How does it work? Use a character from one of your WIPs (planned or in progress, or even finished); I recommend you stick with one, but it’s not required. Think about the questions, then use the prompts to write a scene set before the main story. That scene may be one that has significant impact on who they are today - or simply one that just showcases an important part of their past. Just see where you end up. And - have fun.
What matters? Be creative and support others! Check out their characters and scenes, find what you like, share, comment and make new friends!
What to do to be reblogged? Finish until the respective Sunday (your time or mine, doesn’t matter) and let me know you did it. Tag me, send it to me directly or tag with #yob7 or #yourocsbackstory. If it’s more than 500 words, please use a cut. Edits are welcome but not at all necessary. Please add content warnings before a cut if applicable. If you’re insprired, feel free to write nsfw entries, but I will not share them. This is a sfw blog.
Week 0 Introduction - prompt.
For week 0, we’ll focus on introduction and stick to the same questions we have before.
Write a scene or a monologue, where your character introduces themself to the reader, or to a random, friendly stranger.
Here’s some possible prompts for that:
(a) Imagine they are stuck somewhere (waiting in an airport, adrift in a lifeboat, having their curls done at the hairdresser, whatever) and a young kid asks them „who are you?“. How would that dialogue play out?.
(b) Start with the words “My name is [your character’s name]” and have them introduce themself!
© Have them stuck in a police interrogation (guilty or not…), and make the detective desperate to find out who that person on the other side of the table is.
(d) Have them interviewed by a news host on television or in radio.
(e) Well, whatever you want really ;) Just let them talk.
Preliminary Schedule under the cut:
