so i made a potpourri with cinnamon and nutmeg and ginger and cloves and orange peel and anise and i have boiled it all day and it smelled so nice i took a sip and the sip was actually wonderful so now i have drunk four cups of potpourri juice and i am only now going to the internet to ask if i am going to Experience The Torments. or if i may have a fifth.

(i cannot quite explain it, but it’s like my entire low i have had a low grade stomachache, and normally i just deal but This Juice helps a little. i am unreasonably fond of it.)

Murderbot is such a neurodivergent power fantasy. It can

- store unlimited media and watch it privately

- turn down sensory organs that are bothering it

- look at stuff without its eyes

- cross reference its data storage when it doesn't know what to say

- program "human-like behavior"

i actually get a bit annoyed with people who get a bit annoyed when people say “sorry” in response to their bad news. “why are you apologizing you didn’t do anything :/” like okay well a) you don’t know that and actually yes i am the secret architect of all your woes and have been this whole time, way to refuse to acknowledge a woman (gender neutral)’s accomplishments. and b) we’re both fluent english speakers so you know perfectly well that “sorry” isn’t always an apology and is very commonly used as an expression of general regret or sympathy. not in this case, because i have been your secret nemesis for years, meticulously plotting your every misery, but, like, in general

Here's the thing about Murderbot, and its network of relationships.

ART is probably its best friend, the person it can be most itself around, or be the most fully perceived around. MB doesn't have to hold its punches around it at all and that's important. #MutualAdministrativeAssistants

Dr. Mensah is its favourite human, yes. It is fully 110% ride-or-die for her. And yes that includes a degree of comfort and emotional intimacy, e.g. it will put its feet up on her office couch and trust her not to hug it unless very necessary. but it's very knight-to-liege-lord at the same time.

Pin-Lee is like. On equal standing. A valuable warrior in her own right, just in a different arena. Murderbot respects her professionally, and also the two of them can be little bitches together, it's good for their mutual mental health.

Bharadwaj is Murderbot's therapist. I mean its art friend too, i think it learned SO much about documentary filmmaking from her that came in Real Clutch. but she has tricked it into therapy and i think it's noticed that and it's just pretending it hasn't. that would be awkward. so.

Gurathin is in a unique position as the #worstie. he's the first person Murderbto could be mean to and that's become the core of their dynamic. snark central.

but Ratthi? ratthi is just a sweet little guy.

their relationship is like the most normal friendship that Murderbot has, and that, in of itself, is what makes it deeply weird.

Honestly the Murderbot show is doing a great job showing the difference its helmet makes. At first I thought they’d want it down most of the show so we could see Alexander’s face (ya know, because they hired an actor and not a stunt double), but it’s really becoming clear that the helmet being on or off is part of the story. And honestly helmet!Murderbot IS significantly scarier.

Murderbot with its helmet on (especially with the robotic voice treatment) is a (literally) faceless killing machine, and no one knows what it’s going to do next. Murderbot with its helmet off is a perpetually confused, anxious, and stressed person who wants to get this over with so it can go back to its shows and be left alone.

This adds a lot of nuance to whenever the PresAux team asks/begs it to take its helmet off. The team desperately needs to gauge its “human” facial expressions in order to feel safe vs. please god let me stay in my helmet if they see all my involuntary facial reactions they’re going to Ask About My Feelings again.
