it's been months, but I am STILL stumbling onto discourse about how eddie was soooooo mean to buck in the 8x17 fight. like... the POINT was they were both angry with each other and grieving, and it was SUPPOSED to be nuanced and messy. to me, the fight really served three purposes

1) eddie wants buck to treat him like a partner/spouse the way eddie treats buck like a partner/spouse. he can't articulate it though, so they just go round and round while eddie flounders. when eddie feels unmoored, he gets mean

2) buck wants eddie to tell him things! buck still doesn't get HOW important he is to eddie. a lot of times, eddie tries to pretend something isn't real or isn't happening by keeping things from buck. this is how eddie tries to protect himself from feeling things. buck knowing makes it real. but instead of buck realizing this is happening because of HOW important he is, buck usually diminishes his own importance in eddie's life and can get passive aggressive

3) and personally, I think this is the MOST IMPORTANT part.... buck and eddie can get messy with each other. they can say hurtful shit and keep secrets and have emotional crises... but they can't stay mad at each other. they are safe to fall apart together. that's the most important thing 8x17 showed us imo. they both said hurtful shit, but they forgave each other like it was nothing because that is what they mean to each other.

anyways my point is I will not take 8x17 buddie fight slander. it was messy and nuanced and beautiful and captured the things I love best about their relationship. best friends who are the loves of each other's lives. buddie foreverrrr

I'm just saying, IF the writers wanted to show Eddie just getting along so well with a female character/love interest, they CAN.

And yet, the viewers are presented, again and again, that his other half, the family he chose, his sounding board, worthy of his son getting on a plane to soothe their soul, is always Buck.

“but you wanna know something buck? if you need to be pissed off at me to make it easier for you then be pissed off” IS SUCH AN INSANE LINE AND WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT IT ENOUGH. because yeah, eddie is annoyed that buck hasn’t been supportive and sabotaged his house viewings and replaced him with a dog. but he’s not saying that he doesn’t understand why buck’s been doing all that. he’s acknowledging that this - eddie leaving - is a heartbreakingly difficult thing they’re both going through and that he knows buck is finding it hard. he’s angry about it, he wishes buck hadn’t taken it so hard, he wishes it hadn’t all happened this way, but if buck can only cope with it by being angry then eddie would let him. he’ll let him, but he won’t pretend it doesn’t upset him. and it adds a whole other layer to eddie saying “it’s not nothing” later on. eddie’s angry about it too - he just knows he can’t afford to feel every emotion that’s really connected to the situation because the grief of losing chris and the determination to get him back is already overwhelming. if he focuses on how much it’s hurting to leave buck too, it’ll be too much

eddie’s fucking fascinating dude. he’ll do everything in his power to show what kind of place buck occupies in his life - bringing him christopher after the tsunami, putting him in his will, bringing him comfort and family when he needed it most. he’ll say the most casually romantic and adoring things - there’s nobody in this world i trust with my son more than you, you act like you’re expendable but you’re wrong, i know this whole thing between us has been messy and hard but i hope you know i do care about you. the way he talks about buck to other people, my personal favourite being the concise yet telling “Buck helped” in the lone star crossover episode. eddie will do everything he can to cement buck’s place in his life except call it what it is. and sure, buck’s not calling it what it is either, but when you think about the genuinely insane things eddie says and does it’s bewildering that he hasn’t confessed yet.

and also because - and this is only like half-related but i’m gonna make it work hang on - when eddie does say all those crazy romantic things, a) they’re essentially mini-confessions and b) he’s never once been uncertain of any of it. when he makes those beautiful little declarations, there’s no “i’m sorry if this is too much” or “you can tell me if i’m wrong” or any kind of get out. what there is instead is certainty, conviction, “my attorney said you could refuse […] i knew you wouldn’t.” (<- wild btw)

connecting the dots. what i’m SAYING i think is that once eddie makes his mind up about something then that’s it. and he made his mind up about buck’s place in his life a long long long time ago. eddie decided that they were essentially life partners years ago and has just been acting like that’s the truth without actively doing anything about it. except he HAS been doing something about it, he’s been saying it in bits and pieces this whole time. his declaration of love is endless and ongoing and implicit, does this make any sense at all can anyone hear me

Eddie thinks the worst, that Chris has a problem with them dating, and starts speed running crisis management in his head

Chris starts with “listen, dad. i like buck. a lot. he helps me with my school projects, and he knows a lot of facts, and he cooks”

Eddie is sweating bullets. Chris leans in, and points a finger right into Eddie’s face

Chris continues. “do. not. mess. this. up”

Cue Eddie going ???

Chris: “let’s be honest, dad, your dating record reads like a ‘how not to keep a partner’ handbook. we like buck, so try to be less of.. whatever happened with the others.”

Eddie: “are- are you giving me dating advice?”

Chris: “im just warning you that if something goes wrong with you two, i will assume it’s your fault and buck gets me in the divorce.”

Eddie: “you’re my son!”

Chris: “not for long if you don’t pull yourself together.”

The day buddie get married (and buck simultaneously adopts Chris) Chris gives his dad a hug and whispers “thanks for not messing it up”

Rewatching season 2 is like, Buck is being standoffish with Eddie in the first episode and by the end of it making declarations of loyalty and then the rest of the season they're glued to each other's sides and he's yapping up a storm and Eddie is gazing at him softly, like as soon as Buck determined Eddie was 'safe' he enfolded him into his life immediately and Eddie sunk into that affection and care and partnership like an exhausted man falls into bed, with gusto and relief

there's something unbearably tender about the fact that christopher is symbolic of eddie's world—his everything—and it’s christopher he gives buck in moments where words may fail.

whether it's after the ladder truck incident, to explicitly giving him to buck in his will, or in 8x17, every time eddie gives buck christopher, he's giving him more than trust—he's giving him his heart on a platter.

like—this is the only thing of worth i have to offer you. this is the best part of me. its yours. he's yours.

eddie has been handing buck his heart piece by piece in the shape of his son over and over again throughout the seasons; i wonder if he even realizes all he's revealing in doing so.

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.

Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.
