something i just discovered about nasu’s work but i think is kinda neat is how he grew to like the uber autist believers whom are ready to sink it all in pursuit of their beliefs, because in earlier work he’d squarely slot them as antagonists, these almost selfish villians, so lost in their own thoughts, fighting a battle they’ll surely lose, never overcoming whatever they wanted, never getting over a fact of life (Like ROA from OG tsukihime and that one big guy from KaraNoKyoukai 5th movie) but by the time fate roled out he’d cast someone from the same mold as a tragic hero in the name of kiristugu emiya whod sacirface so many people and things dear to him just for a shot to end the endless wars, even ROA got humanized over the years and especially in the tsukihime remake

So one of the things that American Psycho – the book, not the movie – does to illustrate its narrator’s shallow materialism is devoting a lot of word count to describing characters’ outfits, except the resulting descriptions are just random mishmashes of high-class brands that any reader who’s familiar with them would recognise as something that would look clownish and absurd if you actually wore all that.

I was thinking about that, and then it occurred to me: you know what other well known work of fiction also does that?

fighter pilots think they're such hot shit but they're really not. not anymore. fighter pilots were hot shit when a fighter plane was a rickety little shitbox you could put a hundred of in the sky at once and have them fly into a storm of bullets when any stray bullet had a chance of turning you into a fireball. being a fighter pilot in this day and age is like being a hollywood movie. a perfectly sculpted sexless statue to sanitized violence. nowadays a fighter pilot launches a missile at a civilian hospital from six miles out and then boom! america is safe once again. great work you fuckin loser. you dipshits can't even land a plane during training without something failing in it and causing a 300 million dollar catastrophe. not even the military wants you! the defense department is desperate to replace you with gamers flying drones from air conditioned trailers in nevada! there's nothing less sexy than a fighter pilot.
