Where did you learn that Muska was supposed to be protagonist in the first idea for the movie? I also want to know but can't find the source 😭 I wish we had such a version of Laputa movie, I wonder how he would be like in that scenario.
I guess I’ve just heard it floating around. To be honest, it might just be a rumor at this point. I couldn’t find anything either.
I like to imagine it would have been his search to find Laputa and maybe realize himself that its time had long passed.

I saw your list of CitS headscratches and about this one: "Why did Muska order Goliath to strike the robot while Sheeta was only inches away? Especially if she has info he needs?" I can say that in the original version (can't compare English dub as I didn't see it) Muska says something like "attack the robot but don't hurt the girl", meaning the robot was a threat at this moment but he was aware of Sheeta being close. Curiously in the dub of my country this line was weirdly translated without the mention of Sheeta and further tips, just like "attack the robot". Yeah, she was very close but he was aware of that.
Very true, I forgot about that in the OG version. Dude was cutting it close. Thanks for reminding me.

A comprehensive (?) list of Weird and Whacky Castle in the Sky headscratchers
I know this is a small detail, but at the very beginning of the movie Colonel Muska has four bodyguards but by the end he only has two??
Sheeta gives Muska serious head trauma with that bottle, but he doesn’t seem to have any ill effects from it later on in the movie.
The room in the Saturn airship only has two beds...and there’s no way Muska would leave Sheeta by herself in there...
Where was Muska hiding the rope to bind Sheeta with?? Maybe he’s got big pockets??
Same thing with his revolver. He just pulls it out of his pocket??
Also also, I feel like handcuffs would be easier to carry around??
The fact that the nearly the entire adult male cast have a crush on Sheeta when she’s only 13-15 is insane
Yeah this list includes: Charles, Louis, Henri, some of the other pirates, and controversially, Colonel Muska
And Miyazaki mentioning in the art book that people got married around fifteen back then, which was NOT TRUE and very rare in the 19th century
So many coincidences…
1) the robot placing a flower at the monument, at the exact moment the kids arrived and it being the SEVENTH flower after 700 years
2) Laputa just happening to pass over the mines at the exact moment they are in them
3) A robot just so happens to fall off of Laputa in a place were this army can find it?
And so many more!
Sheeta not getting burnt or otherwise injured by exploding metal at Tedus makes zero sense to me
Why did Muska order Goliath to strike the robot while Sheeta was only inches away? Especially if she has info he needs?
How did anyone survive this movie—how did Pazu survive this movie??
Not explained in the English dub that Muska and Sheeta are not related despite their titles sounding so similar. Their families have been separate for hundreds of years. Like maybe cousins 70 times removed?
I could go on for days, honestly…

So happy to see another enjoyer of Muska 😭 what is ur favorite thing about him?
It’s so hard to choose my favorite thing about him, but what really got me into him in the first place was his voice in the English dub. Mark Hamill gave him such a charming, sometimes sultry voice that gets me riled up😳
And who doesn’t like a dominant, intelligent man in a suit and glasses?
Muska is also just so mysterious, which is intriguing on its own. Makes me wonder how he got to where he was, what his life was like before the film. I need his LORE so bad.
I am not normal about this man😩
Glad to see another person that likes him!

Dr. Harvey —Stardew Valley
New fictional crush just dropped. The theme continues…
I’m really starting to think I have a type:

Colonel Muska—Castle in the Sky

Leo/Loke- Fairy Tail
Yū Tosaki—Ajin Demi-Human

Dr. Daniel Jackson—Stargate SG-1
These are my top four fictional male crushes of the last decade, and to be honest, I’m starting to see a pattern...

Thanks for replying to my notice. Feel free to check out some articles I wrote on Castle on my page if you like. I adore this movie.
Of course! I love to interact with other fans of an otherwise underrated film.
I know I’m relatively new to this little fandom (2012 seemed to be the peak year for LCTIS), but I’m so invested.
I’ve been in love with this movie forever; the whole thing is practically burned into my brain at this point…
This film has given me renewed interest in history, alternate history, science, and anthropology, believe it or not. I wish I could explore that castle :(
There’s just so much to explore with the characters and the beautiful world that Miyazaki crafted to tell his story. I just can’t get enough!

I believe the dislike of Anna Paquin’s voice stems from her sounding much older than her character, as well as the small dips into her New Zealand accent. Though I feel like both of those factors give her character a little more intrigue.
My evidence that Sheeta is absolutely feral
Knocking Muska out the second she has a chance (good on her):

Throwing shovels at pirates:

Biting bad guys:

Bodying the same guy later:

And using her face as a hammer:

Not to mention she tells Muska that Laputa will be a tomb for them both.
And then proceeds to decimate the entire city (well most of it), and stay alive by sheer luck.
Not that I like this fact, but Sheeta is the only Ghibli heroine to kill her respective antagonist. If that’s not feral, I don’t know what is.
Best Ghibli girl, hands down.

Imagine how different Castle in the Sky would have been if Pazu and Sheeta’s kite didn’t catch on the tree and they missed Laputa completely lmao

Not me just realizing that all of the aetherium within the earth and above it is connected in some way or another, like a mycelium complex with Wi-Fi.
How poetic that even thousands of feet in the sky, the Laputians still couldn’t escape the earth they left behind.
I mentioned this before in another post, but the fact that Sheeta’s pendant dissipated the storm shows that this theory has some truth to it.
The connection between the two crystals is so strong that it evaporated a hurricane.
Additionally, it appears that the purest specimen, trapped within the bowels of Laputa, also has a great affect on the other sources below it.
Whenever Laputa passes over anything that contains aetherium, like the mines or Sheeta’s crystal, it immediately lights up, or activates.
This could also explain why Sheeta’s pendant reacted so explosively at Tedus (it got supercharged by the main crystal).
In other words, aetherium is an absolutely overpowered element. It’s got better connectivity than Verizon.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

This hyperfixation had been going on for wayyy too long.
It’s such a shame my brain chose the most controversial pairing ever instead of the one you’re supposed to ship…
As soon as I complete a big fanfiction I will be satisfied. I’ve put too much into this fandom to let go before it’s done.
I hope to have it done by the end of this year!

Laputian Immortality
So, I thought of something while writing my countless, unshared fanfictions for this movie.
What if Laputian immortality doesn't begin until one is exposed to the element of aetherium long enough for it to activate the same element in their blood? The reason laputians died was because they moved to the earth, where the element was all around them but unactivated and impure.
Muska likely had little to no exposure to pure aetherium until he found Sheeta. Now he was wearing her crystal (unactivated), which might have begun the process, but his blood wasn't activated until he touched the crystal when it was active. Hence why it shocked him. This activated his immortality and agelessness, and that's part of the reason it was painful.
He obviously never realizes this, until, of course, he falls and finds that he's not dead when he really should be. Muska would probably remain blind for a few decades or longer, as sight is much harder to heal.
Sheeta, being much younger, likely wouldn’t notice until she reached later adulthood that she wasn’t aging.
What a terrible curse that would be—to watch all those you love die—and for your enemy to be the only one to survive…

Poll results are in!

As I expected, Lady Eboshi had the most amount of votes!
I also did some math, so here’s ~approximately~how many people voted for each person:
Eboshi: 258
Muska: 16

Thank you for voting!!
