"should we -- try more?" she was staring down at her left hand, flexing her fingers and watching the tendons move beneath her skin. she wasn't strong enough -- at least, that's what she was telling herself. she needed more control, more power. more pictos. the expeditions — the gommage — it wasn't something you simply got used to even if it had been there your whole life. gustave had seen far more of than maelle ever would. the very thought made the man nauseous & so he focuses on the chess pieces, aligning them at the ends of the board as if the game had never been played at all. "fighting for lumiere, as all expeditions do." a warm smile offered, the nudge of his foot against maelle's ankle beneath the table. "you'll drown in your mind if you think about it too much, maelle."

he has always been better at chess. it's no surprise that he wins more than half their games. still, losing three times in a row is quite rare for the younger after having learned to specifically combat against gustave's play style. it's no surprise that he brings it up but is still makes the teen sigh heavily. he sees through her so easily and yet what she wants to speak to him about is much heavier than a game a chess. so she might as well start slow and ease him in to the thoughts which have been plaguing her as of late.

I'm contemplating in an intense manner, there's a difference." gustave's irritation doesn't have anything to do with lune — doesn't have anything to do with anyone but himself & his perceived shortcomings. they were so close to figuring out the lumina converter. to mastering the untapped potential they needed for this expedition to go better than the rest. to finally put an end to it all. "this thing keeps exploding in my face - literally!"
