2. La tour Eiffel a été construite pour servir d’arche à l’entrée de l’Exposition universelle de 1889. Elle a été initialement érigée pour durer 20 ans, puis devait être démolie.

what gets me about minkowski and eiffel's relationship is that they are the polar opposite of "i would find you in every life" like i don't think they'd find each other in ANY other life!! they don't share interests; their values conflict; their personal habits and hygiene standards drive each other crazy. the fact that they end up desperately important to each other isn't based on any kind of personal compatibility, but just the bare minimum of "you are a person and you want to go home and we are in hell together" and that's ENOUGH because that's more than the prevailing powers want to allow them. minkowski is determined to get them home and eiffel is determined to make sure they do it without sacrificing what makes them people and it's moving to me that this scraped-bedrock common ground is enough for love to grow from

« EXPOSITION DE SCULPTURES ORLINSKI EN PLEIN AIR SUR L'AVENUE GEORGE V »

C’est tout à fait par hasard que JM a découvert cette Expo lorsqu’il est rentré hier à pied du cabinet de son dentiste (rue des Batignolles dans le 17ème). 1h28 de « marche active », sans pluie et dans un froid… raisonnable.

Se fiant à son GPS piéton, il a dû à un moment traverser les Champs-Elysées pour emprunter l’Avenue George V jusqu’au Pont de l’Alma. Et c’est là qu’il a croisé ces « sculptures » qu’il a rapidement photographiées, se promettant de revenir prochainement avec Marina car les illuminations de la plus belle Avenue du monde sont particulièrement réussies cette année.

Du « Lion majestueux » niveau Four Seasons Georges V au « Crocodile rouge » en passant par le « Cheval » en clin d'oeil devant la maison Hermès, voilà de quoi faire une belle balade découverte.

Et quand la nuit arrive, on ne manque pas d'aller les découvrir sertis des belles illuminations des fêtes.

Bref, une jolie balade à faire pour des découvertes étonnantes !

JM avoue une petite préférence pour faire cette balade la nuit, les lumières donnant à l’ensemble un côté féérique.

Mais la plus monumentale et la plus belle sculpture, même dans la brume parisienne d’un lundi de décembre, en fin de journée, reste notre « voisine », la Tour Eiffel !

Gustave, ingénieur et poète, si tu nous lis, franchement t’as fait du bon boulot !

Nachozeno máme už přes deset kilometrů a ve 34 stupňovém pařáku jdeme doplnit tekutiny do amerického řetězce Dunkin & Donuts nacházejícího se v areálu centrální pošty, jejíž překrásnou budovu navrhl sám Gustav Eiffel. U výborného ananasového a broskvového čaje voláme mamce ze saigonského fastfoodu do kolínské garáže, a pak pokračujeme zpět v procházce do nedalekého parku. Několik Vietnamců se nás ptá odkud jsme a všichni se stejně vyděšeným pohledem odpovídají, že jim je moc líto, ale naši zemi neznají. Za 9 dní ve Vietnamu jsme nepotkali ještě ani jednoho člověka, který by znal Česko. Je to trošku divné, nebo přinejmenším smutné, když vezmeme v potaz, že právě u nás máme velmi silnou vietnamskou komunitu. Procházku protáhneme až do osmé hodiny večerní a něco malého si nakonec odnáším i já. Moje hnědé plátěné kalhoty, které jsem si přivezla z Česka, mě rozčilují nejen svým vzhledem (vypadám, jak když půjdu šplhat na Kilimanjaro), ale i materiálem, který v zimě vůbec nezahřeje, takže je nahradím fajnovými tepláky, které se hodí nejen na cestování v letadle, ale i na chladné večery, kterých už jsme v Asii zažili nespočet. K večeři dnes zasedneme na malé stříbrné stoličky u jednoho z pouličních polévkových stánků a pochutnáme si na výborné hovězí polévce bum bo cha za lidových 27 korun. Navíc tu statná paní k polévce nabízí výborné chili, které už mi opravdu chybělo. U vietnamské kávy zkouknu nabídky hotelů na další dny a po chvíli na mě z telefonu vyskakuje taťkova fotka. Přijímám video hovor a s rodiči klábosíme až do půlnoci. Cestování ve 21. století je opravdu snadné. Přestože jste na druhém konci světa, vidíte svoje blízké, kdy jen se vám zamane, vše ostatní zařídíte online a co online zařídit nejde, vyjednají desítky místních cestovek za vás. Takže hurá na cestu. Dovolte mi vypůjčit si slogan Českých Drah: “Žij, cestuj, užívej!”.

Ho Či Minova socha se nachází v parku hned vedle luxusní nákupní galerie Union Square, jejíž budova je celá z mramoru. S kabelkou od Diora za tisíce dolarů tak procházíte kolem sochy spoluzakladatele Francouzské komunistické strany a nikomu to nepřijde vůbec divné. Mně jo.

Provoz v Saigonu je šílený a já bych si tu řídit netroufla. V jednosměrce potkáte protijedoucí motocykly, které si krátí cestu na nedaleký chodník. To vše se děje za dozoru dopravních policistů.

Rudá a žlutá barva, všudypřítomná pistole a holubice na odlehčení. Rčení “Časy se mění a my s nimi” tady moc neplatí. Tady se stále zpívá stará dobrá internacionála.

Že jsme ve Vietnamu a ne v Severní Americe přeci jen prozradí někteří obyvatelé města, které při cestě potkáváte. Čerstvost kuřecího je zaručena, takže se vykašlete na pho bo, ale raději volte pho gá (tj. kuřecí vývar)!

ARQUITETURA NA REVOLUÇÃO INDUSTRIAL

O impacto da revolução industrial atingiu toda a sociedade e as edificações também passaram por transformações. Com o grande desenvolvimento dos meios de transporte a informação passou a circular mais rapidamente e o desenvolvimento da indústria possibilitou a descoberta, a produção e a disseminação de novos materiais para a construção civil. Os arquitetos da época não estavam tão focados na racionalidade que a revolução trazia, eles estavam mais interessados no ecletismo, que era um movimento que retomava alguns elementos construtivos e decorativos do passado mas com a diferença de que tais elementos deveriam ser integrados em uma única edificação trazendo assim harmonia e representações de diversos períodos na história e consequentemente criando algo totalmente novo, esse movimento também é conhecido como o Historicismo.

Diante dessa distância dos arquitetos com a realidade, surge uma nova profissão no ramo da construção: os engenheiros. Eles foram responsáveis pela implementação das novidades da revolução industrial na construção civil. Devido ao processo de movimentação de pessoas do campo para a cidade, o espaço urbano passou a ser insuficiente para abrigar a população e as novas tecnologias desenvolvidas na revolução abriram a possibilidade para a construção de residências verticalizadas, os prédios.

O ferro, aço e vidro eram os novos materiais marcantes da revolução industrial. A substituição da pedra na estrutura das edificações por ferro e aço permitiu esquadrias maiores, maior iluminação natural, diminuiu o peso das construções o que também possibilitou prédios cada vez maiores.

“O ferro suporta 4 a 40 vezes mais pressão que a pedra e tem um peso bastante menor, com a vantagem de se adaptar a qualquer forma e de não precisar de tantos apoios, aumentando o espaço de circulação. Com ele as paredes puderam ser bastante reduzidas na espessura.” MURALHA, Fátima ((2019).

A primeira obra da engenharia industrial foi uma ponte sobre o rio Severn, na Inglaterra. A Ponte de Ferro foi construída entre 1775 e 1779 na região central da Inglaterra perto de uma cidade chamada Coalbrookdale. Devido sua importância como um marco da era industrial, a ponte foi classificada como Patrimônio da Humanidade pela UNESCO em 1986. A Primeira Exposição Universal em Londres aconteceu no ano de 1851 e tinha como propósito apresentar e expor ao mundo as novidades revolucionárias trazidas pela Revolução Industrial. Mas para a exposição acontecer era necessária uma estrutura para abrigar as obras e para isso foi realizado um concurso o qual Joseph Paxton venceu com seu projeto do Palácio de Cristal. Paxton então resolveu introduzir na obra os materiais característicos da industrialização, principalmente ferro e vidro. A construção tinha grandes vãos cobertos por vidro o que permitia a entrada de luz natural. Durante a feira, a obra impressionou os visitantes e a edificação se tornou um ícone da era industrial. Com o fim da feira e devido ao seu método construtivo revolucionário, foi possível levar a edificação para outro local em Londres no ano de 1852. O prédio foi utilizado para outras atividades e com o passar dos anos foi se deteriorando e somente em 1920 foi alvo de uma reforma, mas em 1936, de acordo com Tagliani (2016), o prédio pegou fogo e foi quase que completamente destruído.

Uma outra edição da exposição que aconteceu em Paris concretizou uma das obras mais icônicas do mundo até hoje. A exposição aconteceu em 1889 e a ideia inicial de um marco para essa exposição, segundo Rawn (tradução de Pereira), era de uma guilhotina com mais de 300 metros, mas essa ideia acabou sendo substituída pelo projeto de uma torre proposta por Gustave Eiffel. A Torre Eiffel foi construída de 1887 a 1889 e ela é basicamente feita de ferro e aço ademais ela serviu como porta de entrada para a exposição. Apesar de não ser bem aceita pela população de Paris, a edificação atraiu milhões de pessoas devido a sua grandiosidade, pois até então era a obra mais alta do mundo, com 324 metros de altura, e isso proporcionava uma bela vista da cidade. A obra deveria ser desmontada após a feira, mas foi mantida e é até hoje um dos locais mais famosos e visitados do mundo.

Un beau jour, quarante-trois femmes qui n’étaient pas enceintes cinq minutes avant donnent le jour, simultanément, à un enfant. Reginald Hargreaves, richissime entrepreneur excentrique, en élève sept comme ses propres enfants au sein de la Umbrella Academy.

Bon, ça, c’est la théorie. Dans les faits, ledit Hargreaves les a plus ou moins achetés les sept. Comme père, il est plutôt nul: tyrannique, incapable de montrer la moindre empathie envers ses « enfants » – qu’il nomme d’ailleurs par numéros – il cherche surtout à développeur leur potentiel surhumain.

Car oui, ces enfants sont plus qu’humains: super-force, super-suggestion, téléportation, pouvoir parler avec les morts, etc. Tous, sauf Vanya, la septième. Et Ben, qui est mort – encore que…

The Umbrella Academy commence avec, d’une part, la mort du patriarche Hargreaves et le retour de ses enfants – y compris « Numéro Cinq » (on ne saura jamais son prénom), qui dit débarquer de l’avenir, où il est le seul survivant d’un cataclysme qui aura lieu dans huit jours.

Puis arrive un couple de tueurs et les choses commencent à partir en sucette.

Non, soyons honnête: c’était déjà le bazar avant.

The Umbrella Academy, c’est surtout l’histoire d’une super-fratrie que presque rien ne lie les uns aux autres, à part peut-être les traumatismes partagés. Enfants-superhéros élevés par un misanthrope obsessionnel, une n ounou-robot et un chimpanzé, ils sont devenus des adultes dysfonctionnels. Et les voilà à devoir empêcher la fin du monde, sans vraiment savoir où, qui, quoi, ni comment.

La série, parue originellement sur Netflix en dix épisodes, a un petit côté Tim Burton dans ses visuels. Peut-être aussi dans l’idée des adultes mal sortis de l’enfance – certains littéralement.

Sur cette base, on aurait pu avoir un truc turbosérieux, tragique et tout. En fait, The Umbrella Academy est plutôt drôle, avec un humour décalé, des personnages tous plus ou moins fêlés et des situations absurdes, genre le rendez-vous mystérieux au milieu de nulle part interrompu par un camion de glace. Oh, ce n’est pas The Tick, non plus, mais c’est bien barré quand même.

J’avais lu la BD à l’époque de sa sortie – en tout cas le premier run, sur lequel est vaguement basé cette série. C’est moins délirant ici, puisqu’on évite le Gustave Eiffel zombie (pour le moment, en tout cas), et un peu plus soft dans le traitement, mais je vous avoue que je ne m’en souviens pas énormément non plus.

Cela dit, la série est plutôt pas mal. Il faut accepter de rentrer dans le délire et les premiers épisodes sont peut-être un peu mous, mais ça vaut la peine de s’accrocher. L'ambiance est bien sympa et c'est souvent très drôle. Et puis bon, dix épisodes de longueur standard, ça se binge vite.

Y'a pas de mal à se faire du bien!

Las Vegas' ta bulunan bir kumarhanenin ön kısmında 32 metre yüksekliğinde bir Eyfel Kulesi kopyası bulunmaktadır. C.V.N.E. Masterclass with Toni Batet

On a cool spring morning in May, a handful of wine journalists and a cadre of staff from Pacific Wine and Spirits and Vintage Chophouse were taken on a tour of Rioja by C.V.N.E. Export director, Toni Batet.  Toni took our group through a history lesson of Compañia Vinicola del Norte de Españia talking about the 140 year old family owned estate and their now 4 wineries / brands under the C.V.N.E. banner.  He discussed Rioja and its 3 subzones in Rioja Alta, Rioja Oriental (formerly Baja) and Rioja Alavesa and talked about the differences between terroir and suitable grape varietals that flourish in each.   Some interesting facts before diving into the wines:

The variance in the name CUNE vs CVNE was due to a printer who decided that a U would be better than a V on the label. 

In 1909, C.V.N.E. worked with and completed a new barrel cellar designed by Aleixandre Gustave Eiffel, the same architect that designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The cellar pillared ceiling design has no columns allowing for maximum use of space for barrel storage.

In 2013, C.V.N.E achieved a double Environmental Footprint award for its Cune Crianza wine which measures the end to end production impacts of CO2 and Water consumption and was the first in wine producer in Spain to earn.

In the same year, the 2004 Imperial Gran Reserva was recognized by Wine Spectator as its #1 wine of the year making C.V.N.E. the first Spanish producer to achieve this prestigious recognition.

C.V.N.E. was focused on the domestic market up until the last 15 years, where export markets became a priority. 

Whites

2017 Monopole White Rioja - This 100% Viura from Rioja shows hints of green pear / lemon with fainter notes of white tea and citronella.  On the palate, it has softened a bit in the bottle but still carries vivacious acid. Mr. Batet recommends Monopole is best enjoyed 2 to 3 years post vintage and this 2017 is coming into its own right now.  I’d experiment with it even longer as those secondary characters can be quite appealing for those that wait.   $19 Retail

2014 Cune Corona - From a tiny section of Rioja that is susceptible to Botrytis comes this blend of semi-sweet blend of 85% Viura with smaller percentages of White Garnacha and Malvasia.  This is like Sauternes without being cloying or syrupy as it retains more acid and carries less sugar which punctuates floral notes and bright acid from the Viura.  $36 Retail (500ml bottle)

Rośe

2017 Cune Rosado - From 100% Tempranillo, the 2017 Cune Rosado has a vibrant cherry red hue from its 24 to 48 hour maceration period. This is more of a traditional, food styled Rośe with notes of cherry and watermelon on the palate with a bit of tannic grip over the finish.  $16 Retail

2017 Viña Real Rosado - From a blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Viura, this pale salmon copper hued wine sees a mere hours of maceration time before fermentation.  This process retains the freshness and aromas while the brief stay on the skins of the red grapes gives color and depth.  The addition of Viura gives freshness and acid that shows through and is that light, drinkable on its own style that has been made popular by wines from Provence. $20 retail

Red

2015 Cune Crianza - From a blend of 85% Tempranillo with the rest Garnacha and Mazuelo, the Cune Crianza should be a consideration as a house wine for both consumers and restaurants alike.  Light bodied, it shows freshness carried by elegant cherry, hard raspberry candy, dusty concrete and a faint spiced, herbal character. On the palate, it stays light and elegant with tart cherry on the attack. It firms on the mid palate and dries with powdery, herb tinged tannin over a long finish. $20 Retail  

2015 Viña Real Crianza - It was interesting to taste this wine side by side with its Crianza counterpart from Cune. Where the Cune is light and elegant, the Viña Real is darker, richer and more powerful with black berries, spice and  earth driven herbal characters. Its feat is being able to deliver this power while maintaining a balanced softness and overall drinkability.  $25 Retail

2014 Cune Reserva - From the typical 12 months in oak seen on the Crianza, the Reserva moves to 18 months in a blend of American and French oak and has the same constituent varieties of primarily Tempranillo with Garnacha, Mazuelo and some Graciano.  This medium bodied wine showcases black berry, spice, tar and earthy characters on the nose and palate.  There is still a core of acid and minerality that is evident throughout the Cune lineup which will reward cellaring.  $27 Retail

2014 Viña Real Reserva - This wine was fun to contrast to the Cune Reserva as this blend is the same but the winemakers amped up the extraction giving this medium plus wine that much more in terms of aromatics and flavor characteristics. In addition to the black berry fruit, notes of smoke, tar and black tea punctuate over its lengthy finish.  $34 Retail

2012 Viña Real Gran Reserva - Blend of primarily Tempranillo with 5% Graciano, the 12 Viña Real is a powerhouse of intensity and complexity on the nose and palate where extended oak exposure brings out coffee, spices, leather that marry beautifully to fresh and stewed black berry and stone fruit. There is still a core of acid that carry the experience and will continue to do so for another 15 + years. $66 Retail

2014 Imperial Reserva - Mr. Batet chose to pair the top tier Imperial wines together and his reasoning is sound. The Imperial line are only made in the top vintages and have been made going back to the 1917 vintage.  This Reserva is a blend of primarily Tempranillo with the remaining 15% being split between Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. The aromatics and flavors are so complex and evolve in the glass, making this a wine that you want to take your time with.  Glycerin, minerals, cola leaves, turned earth and spice start with a core of black and red berry fruit that goes for an eternity on the palate.  Acidity is evident, giving this backbone and structure for a long life in the cellar.  $55 Retail

2011 Imperial Gran Reserva - The last red poured, the Imperial Gran Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Generally speaking, the 2011 vintage in Rioja was not a classic but the winemaking team made the most of it with this blend that showcases cherry, prune, anise, tobacco and black tea on the bouquet and palate.  This is another wine that evolves in the glass where notes of spice and leather hide and emerge and should be savored and considered with each sip. A splendid example of balance, power and elegance.  In terms of cellaring, this vintage will evolve and reward to 2030.  $90 Retail

Nueva York– La antorcha original de la Estatua de la Libertad, reemplazada hace 33 años por su deterioro, destella en el nuevo museo de 2,400 metros cuadrados a los pies de la dama de hierro, en Nueva York, espacio que abre sus puertas desde este jueves a los visitantes.

El nuevo museo recoge entre sus paredes de diseño, curvadas al estilo de la caída del vestido de la efigie, los modelos originales y algunas de las réplicas utilizadas al construir “La libertad iluminando al mundo”, su nombre real, así como explicaciones sobre el proceso de construcción y algunos de los nombres propios que explican la existencia del reconocible símbolo neoyorquino.

La travesía arranca por tres salas de visionados en las que se proyecta una historia de diez minutos de duración que cuenta la idea original del político francés que concibió el regalo de Francia a Estados Unidos por el centenario de su independencia, Eduardo Laboulaye, así como su desarrollo por parte del escultor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi y el ingeniero Gustave Eiffel.

Posteriormente, las proyecciones dan paso a las alrededor de 150 piezas expuestas, como modelos de pies de la estatua que fueron aumentando su tamaño de manera progresiva hasta alcanzar las dimensiones actuales sobre el pedestal de Liberty Island, debido a la dificultad para los constructores de elaborar la obra.

El museo también permite ver reproducciones en cobre de otras partes de la estatua, como la cara, que además muestra el color original del bronce de la efigie, convertido en verde por el óxido de sus materiales.

La pieza central, sin embargo, es la flamante antorcha original que se erigió sobre el cielo neoyorquino desde 1886 hasta cien años después, cuando fue sustituida por la actual con el estilo ideado por Bartholdi.

Y esto es porque la llama de la Estatua de la Libertad cambió con los años, desde añadidos de lámparas eléctricas en el interior, hasta ventanas. Su último rediseño, de 1916, sustituyó la superficie de cobre por 600 vidrios tintados de color ámbar, obra del escultor americano Gutzon Borglum, el creador del Monte Rushmore.

Sin embargo, esta última modificación supuso el declive adelantado de la antorcha y su posterior retirada, pues permitía la entrada de la lluvia y de basura en el interior de la estatua.

El nuevo museo sustituye a una pequeña galería en el interior del pedestal de la estatua y permite el acceso de todos los visitantes a la isla y no solo para aquellos que compren entrada para entrar en la efigie.

De acuerdo con el superintendente del Monumento Nacional de la Estatua de la Libertad y de la Isla de Ellis, John Piltzecker, la puesta en marcha de este nuevo edificio del museo -ideado por el estudio ESI Design- fue también por el dispositivo para acoger a las decenas de miles de personas que, a diario, visitan la isla de la Libertad.

“Si visitaron la Estatua de la Libertad antes del 11S, no teníamos un sistema de entradas y si querías subir a la corona solo tenías que esperar. Estábamos acumulando a gente hasta niveles de mucha inseguridad”, explicó Piltzecker, lo que supuso restringir la entrada de gente al pedestal y, también, de visitantes al museo.

Según el responsable de conservación de la estatua, solo el 20 por ciento de las hasta 25,000 personas que pueden visitar un día de verano la estatua accedían a entradas para el pedestal.

Ahora, con el nuevo edificio construido sobre terreno ganado al mar durante la Primera Guerra Mundial para uso militar, no hará falta comprar entrada para acceder a la estatua, sino que el boleto general de ida y vuelta en ferry permitirá el acceso para ver en primera persona la llama con la que soñaban los miles de inmigrantes que llegaban a Estados Unidos por mar.
