Being back in Blue Harbor after nearly a month in Toronto felt unnerving to Cyrus. It was familial issues more than it was a vacation—he remembered vacations usually made someone relaxed. In Toronto, Cyrus hadn’t relaxed a bit. Nonetheless, he settled back into the same house in Oak Gardens and restarted work at the hospital like nothing ever happened. A weird day off (which rarely happened), led him to Thrift Haven. Cyrus didn’t thrift ever, but he supposed with a thrift store in the town, he was bound to be in it eventually. He browsed through the available items, but by now he was far too used to hospital scrubs and the occasional sweatshirt over them to care about what else he wore when he wasn’t working. He eyed a black button-up, about to grab it when a sudden voice caused him to flinch. “Hm? Oh, yeah. I like it; I could never wear something like that at work.”

time off was sacred, but it was rare. whenever elspeth was treated with a spare wedge of time to themselves, it was often swallowed up in the necessities—grocery shopping, doctor’s appointments, catching up on her ever growing to-be-read list that seemed to elongate exponentially quicker than it lessened. that morning she was at the thrift store, feeling through the thick fabrics, trying to find something new to add to her slim wardrobe; when their everyday outfit was head-to-toe medical scrubs and little plastic booties over their shoes, it didn’t make much sense to have all that much variety. “what do you think?” she beamed, grabbing a tiger mask from the top hanger, balancing it on the crown of her head, “i don't know, i’m thinking it might do wonders in lightening the mood!”

Since his arrival to Blue Harbor a couple of days ago (excluding the occasional sporadic visits he took over the summer to figure out the town), Emmy was feeling out of place—maybe it was the school year starting, maybe otherwise, but he felt out of place regardless. Thankfully, it was the weekend, and that meant some time to collect their thoughts before Monday. A curious glance to the right led his eyes to meet seemingly a pub, and piquing his interest, he parked his car and stepped out towards the establishment.

They never drank, never once thinking to try alcohol in their newly twenty-five years of life—so a pub was the last place they’d expect themself to be in. Yet part of this whole new-to-town thing was, well, just that, actually. He figured he should explore Blue Harbor as much as he could to get used to things. The interior looked nice, and it wasn’t particularly packed, either. Perhaps there were other bars in town, that’d be for another day, they supposed. He walked over to the actual bar, sat down on a stool, and tapped his fingers on the surface for a moment before waving over the bartender and ordering buffalo wings. Was it weird to eat at a bar without actually consuming alcohol? Emmy didn’t think so. He looked over, noticing a person beside him, and regarded them with a nod. “Are there more bars in this town? You’d think for the weekend it’d be packed.”

emrys highly prefers emmy as a way for them to self-validate their non-binary identity—which they really only came to terms with late last year. emrys is acceptable in some circumstances (ie: family), but otherwise they usually prefer emmy.

before deciding on being a teacher, he wanted to be a hockey player. sports were a huge part of their life for a while, and to this day, although they don’t play hockey (obviously), they still ice skate from time to time.

history was an interest of his from the moment he emigrated to america, but he was highly considering being an english teacher for a while.

they use sarcasm as a way to cope, which isn’t the best choice, and may be off putting to some, but they have a compassionate side as well, which is really only shown when emmy knows they can trust someone.

his main two character inspirations are dimitri (anastasia) and chandler bing (friends.)

Emrys Vladimirovich Sudayev was born into a working-class Russian-Jewish family in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the first-born child of Vladimir and Katerina Sudayev, a restaurant chef and a social worker, respectively. His father was a stone-cold, unaffectionate man, often leaving a young Emrys to care for his siblings while he was out at clubs and parties when not at work—often with heavy amounts of drugs and alcohol involved—and with his mother working odd hours, Emrys felt that he had to grow up quicker than his peers, which took a toll on his mental health as well.  This went on for years, up until they were about 15. It was at that point when Vladimir admitted to having an affair with one of his co-workers, that he’d been hiding for several years—and, after admitting this, he fully abandoned the family and moved to Moscow. At this revelation, their parents divorced, with Katerina gaining full custody of the children, and the family (sans Vladimir) immigrated to America not long after, settling in Manhattan, where Emrys and his siblings began attending school and settling into their new lives. Summers were still spent—albeit very awkwardly—with their father in Moscow, but arriving in America had really become the family’s rite of passage. It was only in Manhattan that Emrys really developed a newfound interest in teaching. History in particular had always piqued his interest, and his mind became set on wanting to become a teacher. They moved to Chicago shortly after graduating high school, and attended the University of Chicago on a scholarship, double majoring in history and education. For years after, he split his time teaching in Chicago, and spent his summers in Manhattan with his family—he decided it would be best to avoid contacting his father at all costs. They began student-teaching in a public high school not long after and officially became certified in the fall of 2022. In July 2024, he heard of a job offer in Blue Harbor as a 9th grade history teacher, which he applied and was interviewed for. They weren’t really expecting to get the job, but they did—which led to their arrival in early September.

he often uses humor in his day-to-day life. he has no ill intent, though, and is more than willing to be serious when necessary. he really doesn’t understand dry humor, however

he was diagnosed with adhd at the age of 6, but it went untreated for a while (his parents didn’t exactly know how to manage it), but he’s managing it fairly well nowadays

his first language is farsi (persian), but he is fluent in english as well. he knows basic signs in asl, and he also knows spanish & arabic but it’s not as great as the other two. his accent is a mix of iranian and canadian

romantic love is something he doesn’t quite understand yet (he definitely has felt platonic/familial love before.) his love language is quality time

Cyrus Amani was born on May 1st, 1985 to a young Iranian couple who only wanted the best for their son. When he was 3, they relocated to Toronto, Canada, for Cyrus (and later, his two younger siblings) to have better opportunities. His father worked part-time as a volunteer firefighter, which inspired Cyrus’ interest in helping people. Of course, being a firefighter seemed overwhelming, but the idea of working in the medical field piqued his curiosity. While he had many hobbies growing up, medical work had always been his top interest. He would spend hours researching the field and all the different career paths on end, and his family was incredibly encouraging whenever he brought the topic up. After high school, Cyrus attended university in Toronto, though he was less fortunate when it came to applying for medical school. He decided to attend school in America after some thinking, and after several acceptances, he narrowed down his list of possible states before deciding on Chicago. He completed his five-year general residency program in the city and began his three-year Cardiothoracic program there as well. Halfway through his second year in the program, he received a phone call that nearly changed the course of his life. His father had been critically injured due to an accidental fall, and things weren’t looking so good. Cyrus rushed home to Toronto to say goodbye and was especially devastated due to his father being his top role model in life. From there, his mental health plummeted immensely, with official diagnoses of prolonged grief disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and depression. He stayed with his mother and siblings in Canada for a little while before returning to Chicago—his only reason for the return was that his mother persuaded him to pursue his dreams. He agreed to head back and settled into a small apartment. After several months of training, he officially became licensed in 2019 and started work almost immediately. In 2022, he adopted a golden retriever puppy named Charlie to help take his mind off of his stress (and to have company). He later trained Charlie to become his psychiatric service dog when she was old enough. After a while, he realized the big city life just wasn’t for him any longer. In late 2023, he packed up his things (and Charlie) and moved about an hour and a half away to Blue Harbor in hopes of simultaneously managing his grief and starting anew.
