Fried green tomatoes is such an underrated movie. I love it so much. It’s got it all, 1920s southern accents, a queer couple that is never a ‘couple’ but it’s heavily implied and they raise a boy together, it’s set in my home state, and of course, the white shn-azi gets what he gets.

I never understood why my mom loved it so much (beyond it being a very good movie). I understand now, but that’s her secret to keep.

You know how in Fried Green Tomatoes the movie they try to make Idgie wear the dress and it causes all kinds of problems?

This didn’t happen in the book. Idgie didn’t have to wear Buddy’s hand-me-downs to the wedding because her mom had a green velvet suit made for her ahead of time. Idgie’s mom respected her gender identity differences and knew that Idgie would ruin the wedding if forced to wear a dress.

Idgie’s parents in the book respected her feelings for Ruth. They helped Idgie get her life started with Ruth and told her that she had to grow up and be responsible because she had the baby and Ruth to support.

Also, when Idgie was a teenager and just started to have a crush on Ruth, Idgie’s mom tried to  explain the situation to the family and keep the other kids from teasing her. Idgie was acting very silly, trying to show off with sports and catching fish and blushing when Ruth talked to her. Idgie’s mom told everyone that she just had a little crush and to leave her alone. It didn’t work but she tried.

The book has so much more. It is way better.
