Peyton exhaled at his questions. Usually, she’d lash out of storm off but to be frank she wasn’t sure that she could make it anywhere without a great amount of assistant. The irony of the situation was that she wouldn’t have made it outside without him so she had to be grateful despite gracious wasn’t exactly her style. “Yes, I am. Don’t go feeling special.” Brat. It was a term she’d grown familiar with beside the outspoken, powerful female she was. Perhaps it was easier to call her a brat than something much harsher. So maybe brat was a more polite term. “It’s not wise to go offering your friendship so aimlessly, M–” Peyton challenged him, searching for his name in the same way he had. Anyone Angel chose to be friends with must have been a good person but it was unlike Peyton to let someone exist without teasing and ridicule. A passing second of mere sobriety washed over her, putting her in her place. The girl cozied up on the brick wall beside him, looking up at his tan features. “So, what are you doing here? You don’t strike me as the luxurious club type. Not in like a poor way – but in a distasteful waste of time kind of way.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
          “  sage,  ”  the male informs, finding amusement in the way she mocks him but decidedly keeping that to himself.  (  her ego was already big enough.  )  banter was more or less a sport to sage, and something he was quite decent at, though he rarely got to put it in practice. people, especially women, tended to be sensitive to harsh words, even if they were meaningless. broad shoulders will lift into a shrug.  “  eh, aimlessness is kind of my thing.  ”  an understatement  !  one might go as far as to say that his every move was pointless, without purpose. but of course, it was to his own accord, and perhaps that made it less depressing.  “  same as you, i bet.  ”  looks at her out of the corner of his eyes, in all her drunken stupor. was it sick that he found it endearing  ?  alcohol was one of the few vices that could bridge the gap between someone like peyton, and someone like himself. hence how fond of it he was. there was no telling how different this interaction would’ve played out if he’d been on the same level as her.  “  i’ll try to take that as a compliment. you’re not wrong, though  ---  i’m not super into clubs. just needed a change in environment, i guess. i’m sure they’re getting sick of me at the graveyard.  ”  in truth, the male found solace in losing himself in settings such as the golden standard, where waves of strangers could swallow him whole. for it was here that he could go unnoticed, that his actions lacked in consequence. he was liberated. he’ll twist tendrils around his index finger, unsure of what to do with his hands, especially with her looming proximity.  “  don’t you ever get sick of places like this  ?  ”

*  CLEMENTINE  +
Another day, another dollar, another glass she had to hand-dry with a rag. It was alright. Clementine didn’t particularly mind the cleaning part of this job, it was more the serving and customer service that made her anxious. She could have picked to work at the book store, or the boutique, or literally anywhere else but of course, she picked the job that required social skills in order to make money. The dirty blonde was nice enough, but some of the older residents asked her to speak up and her manager told her to smile more. Who could smile while cleaning up yet another spilled milkshake? The other side of that coin was that Clem had an unintentional habit of spilling drinks and dropping plates. She tried her best, though, and refused to work without putting forth 100% of her effort. Anything under that would be pointless.
She stared out the big glass window, watching cars drive past and wondering if she knew anybody driving them. Of course, she met a lot of people working at the diner but nobody stuck with her unless they made an impression. A figure came into her line of vision, and she wavered a little before a grin crept up on her face. “Oh. Hi, Sage. Guess I traded up for a rag,” The girl simpered, unable to maintain eye contact after realizing that what she said hadn’t quite made sense. She could feel her ears get a little hot, “C-can I grab you a coffee or somethin’?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
          from the few words she spoke, sage could tell that the female hadn’t changed a bit. which was good and bad, of course. he was fond of her soft-spoken nature, but the world was harsh. it could chew up a girl like clementine and spit her right back out. thoughts border on worrisome as she tries to cater to him.  “  no, no. i’m all good. was just about to head out actually before i saw you.  ”  in a perfect world, sage could waste the rest of his night here just hanging out with the blonde. but such a suggestion would’ve been too bold, and he’d have to ease into it.  “  i just... wanted to catch up, honestly.  ”  corners of his mouth lift into a genuine grin. questions upon questions come to mind but he’ll hold his tongue, as the last thing he wanted was to bombard the girl and make her uncomfortable. he needed to focus on being gentle. and calm. two things he struggled with indefinitely.  “  how are you, clem  ?  like,  really.  ”

*  LIV  +
Tumblr media
she couldn’t hide the smile on her face, honestly she knew she was guilty of the same exact thing back in jersey. it’s not her fault that the most economically sound way of going to bars was to drink before hand. “i’m gonna level with you, sage. i’m pretty bad at names so i think we can call it even.” it wasn’t a big deal, that she knew. hell, if anything she could take it as a compliment.
speaking of compliments, liv got a laugh out of the comment. truly the only way to make drinks was in a way that was silent but deadly because anyone who said they liked the taste of alcohol was typically lying. “i’ve been at it for a few years, back in jersey. and yeah, still new to the area. quite a change.”
Tumblr media
          the relationships sage built with bartenders tended to be very polarizing  ---  either they got along great, like what was happening now with liv, or the other found the male  annoying,  to put it lightly. to be fair, he definitely could be irritating when drunk. or when sober. all the time, really. it depended on how true to himself he was being. the more honest he was, the more displeasing other people usually found him. especially at bars.
          “  jersey, huh  ?  i’ll be honest, i don’t know anything about it past jersey shore and mayday parade. god, i haven’t thought about that band since i was like sixteen.  ”  he took another sip from the drink, more graceful this time, though finesse was never his largest strength.  “  you like it, then  ?  the hollow, i mean.  ”

*  FAITH  +
Tumblr media
Faith appreciated that Sage wasn’t like anyone else in this town, he followed the beat of his own drum and she admired that. The ability to be free, no restrictions on who you are. Her parents just accepted that she was gonna dress however she wants, but there was still that borderline of dressing in an appropriate outfit for church.
“That I’m holding it for my buddy sage, he loves smoking usb sticks,” Faith chuckled. She took the pen back from him taking a drag from it again, she took better pictures when she was high and she was heading to a shoot after this. Granted it was for advertising and she doubted she would have any creative license over it. But at least it wasn’t bagging some groceries. “I’m done being a grocery lady for the day, thank God. I can’t get too high pre-work, too many people know my family in this cesspool of a town.
Tumblr media
          a genuine laugh belowed from the confines of his chest, real and hardy, and clearly weed-induced. faith was unlike most of sage’s other friends. she had a reputation to uphold that went beyond money, beyond social bullshit. he couldn’t even imagine maintaining such a facade. thankfully his family wasn’t particularly religious, but he’d still gone to a handful of sunday-whatever-the-fucks with his neighbor, toby. formalwear really wasn’t his thing, and neither were the odd looks his long hair earned from the other churchgoers. but he still would’ve gone again if someone asked.
          “  that makes me sound like a robot. god that techy shit is so wild,  ”  he snickered, pushing his hair behind both ears.  “  when i first started smoking weed you could only get flower. cannabis oil hadn’t even been discovered yet. well, maybe it had but no one had access to it yet.  ”  even still, the male mostly stuck with bud as opposed to any of the newer stuff.  “  makes sense that you smoke it like that though. gets you high as balls without the smell. today one of my customers at work kept hinting that she could smell the weed on me and it took all my self control not to ask if she wanted some. pretty sure she was like forty and a mom.  ”

*  PEYTON  +
In the crowd Peyton hung around in, she figured that any man interacting with her was trying to do one of two things: flirt with her or belittle her. As the man’s tall frame leaned into her, speaking loudly over the loud music, perhaps it was against her better judgment to assume he was trying to mock her. It could have been this preconceived notion that all most men she aligned herself with were assholes, especially in this club, or perhaps it could have just been the booze pumping through her veins and impairing her judgment. “Very funny, Tarzan.” Peyton hissed, leaning into him. Without so much as batting an eyelash, the man began leading her outside. It was instinctual to fight back, but it was convenient to have someone using themselves as a human pile driver to assist her. Once outside, her eyes scanned his face at the mention of Angel. When she first bumped into him, she theorized that she knew him. But, she couldn’t tell if that was rational or the booze talking. Yet it was finally coming together. “Peyton.” She scoffed, nearly offended that he hadn’t remembered her name. “So, you bump into me and then bring me outside for –?” She stared skeptically at him, awaiting a suitable response. “You think just because you know Angel that we’re friends? I know about stranger danger, mister, and as far I know you’re just a weird man with no manners.” The redhead’s slurred speech was nearly comedic. Anyone who was listening could gather that she was far too drunk. Surely she’d regret this tomorrow but for right now, it was entertaining for her drunk mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
          god, was she always this disagreeable  ?  he’ll give her the benefit of that doubt, but it was likely that the alcohol wasn’t the only reason the redhead responded in such a manner. this wasn’t the first time sage had hung around with girls of the  wealthy  variety, so he keeps his distance. arms cross over his chest but eventually drop to his sides  ---  he’d heard something once about how that made a person seem more approachable, and the last thing he wanted to seem like was a  weird man.
          “  can you fucking chill out  ?  ”  he struggles to keep his intonation light.  “  you wanted to go outside, did you not  ?  seemed like a good idea, so i helped. the end.  ”  head falls back against the brick. a part of sage was jealous of the level of insobriety she’d reached. if he himself had tried to match it, surely he’d have raked up a much heftier bill than he could pay for.  “  you usually this big of a brat or did i just hit the jackpot  ?  ”  comments are sure to make her angrier, but he couldn’t help himself. a rough sigh comes from him as he continues.  “  look, i’m sorry that i’ve  somehow  upset you, but it wasn’t intentional. would be cool if you could just like, take a deep breath and talk to me like a normal person, peyton. we don’t gotta be friends but jesus christ.  ”

          he’s pretty sure she’s  not  coming, though at this point, it came as no surprise to sage when his mother skipped out on their plans. it wasn’t like she meant to. the woman hadn’t a drop of malice in her entire body. what she was overwhelmed with was  kindness,  however, which often meant overbearing work days at the hospital that spilled past original scheduling. she’d been this way for the male’s entire life and he’d gotten used to it long ago. though normally when finding himself consequently alone, it wasn’t sat at a lonely booth in the back of the giant peach diner. he would’ve stayed for a meal if he could afford it, but without his mom’s financial help that wasn’t an option. it’s on his way towards the exit that oaken hues fall upon a familiar face.
          how long had it been since he’d seen her  ?  sage couldn’t put an exact date on it, but it’d undoubtedly been years. not that he’d admit it, but the male probably hadn’t thought about clementine since he was a teenager. corsages and matching ties were what had been on the menu then. there wasn’t anything in particular that she had done to grab his attention so many years back, but he was fond of the blonde. there was  delicacy  within her, but it didn’t neccessarily equate to innocence, and he found it intreging to say the least. he’ll lean against the bartop, flashing pearly white as he silently calls for her attention.  “  not gonna lie, i almost didn’t recognize you without a book or a pencil or something.  ”  @chmydcrling

*  PEYTON  +
Peyton Ainsworth was what anyone would describe as socialite. She thrived in group settings, whether it be a more intimate setting or a grandiose event for work. She could talk to anyone and make the best out of any situation. All things considered, she knew in her heart of hearts that despite having to work on the finishing details for a fundraiser the next day, she had to go to her friend’s bachelorette party at the Golden Standard. Was there any other way to spend a Saturday night that getting belligerent and seeing what destiny had in store? Peyton intended to do just that.
Peyton’s relation to the bride wasn’t much more than mutual exclusivity. The girl knew that if she wanted Peyton’s insight on her wedding, she would have to have her be a bridesmaid rather than paying her hefty price tag. So when it came to partying with this friend of friend and her friends, the redhead couldn’t help but sit back and indulge in the free booze from bottle service. It wasn’t that the girls weren’t fun, because they certainly were. More fun than the proper and pretentious girls she normally hung around with. But the drunker she got, the more she craved someone she could be a bit more comfortable around. She debated having Angel pick her up or maybe even that guy from the auto body shop, but she decided it was probably a bit more polite to stick around, though polite wasn’t exactly in the girl’s nature.
After much introspection, Peyton decided to make her way outside to enjoy some fresh air. Maybe that would make the experience a bit more enjoyable, maybe even sober her up. With wobbly legs, the girl made her way past the crowded bar, not paying not much mind. Usually the seas would part for her so when she accidentally bumped into someone, shock overcame her feature. “You make a better wall than a window,” The girl hissed, her words a bit slurred as she crossed her arms in protest. “Are you going to apologize? Or at least move so I can by?”

          truth be told, the male wasn’t even allowed to be here right now. sage, and sage-types alike, often didn’t meet the required  standard  of the golden standard. go figure that unkempt hair and ratty shoelaces wouldn’t cut it. one could easily tell that he was working class  ;  couldn’t smell the money on him. it took the bouncer less than ten seconds to cast him away as riffraff. normally he would’ve cut his losses and headed to a more welcoming location, tail between his legs, but tonight sage was determined. given their lofty protocol, it shouldn’t have been so effortless to sneak inside the side entrance. but here he found himself, hours later, half enebriated and still somehow fully alone in the middle of the club. an odd sense of loneliness was begining to engulf him, but he’s soon distracted from his feelings when a familiar redhead collides into his side.
          “  what  ?  ”  sage leaned closer in effort to hear her better over the deafening electric music. he pointed to his ear before explaining,  “  i can’t hear you  !  ”  though he didn’t know her as anything beyond  angel’s friend,  it was clear that she was trying to manuever through the crowd. and a piece of him suddenly felt responsible to help the drunken girl get to her destination.  “  are you going outside  ?  ”  doesn’t wait for an answer before offering an arm out to her, using his much larger stature to shove through the sweaty horde of strangers until they reached the exact door he’d snuck in through.
          once outside, it was like he could finally experience what oxygen felt like  ---  a newborn baby filling its lungs for the first time. back comes to rest against the side of the building, and fingers attempt to comb through his roots. a content sigh elicits from him as he looks over to the girl.  “  you’re angel’s friend, right  ?  p---  ”  sage stops himself before absolutely butchering her name. he didn’t know all that much about her, but if knew anything about the people angel liked to hang around, it was how high maintenence they could be.
