Painting 2 assessment 2, Final body of work.
I began my work for the second assessment looking at landscapes of areas in Sydney that evoked a certain feeling. This feeling was at times unease, peacefulness, confusion, loneliness, abandonment or emptiness. Throughout my experimentation themes of surveillance and the way we interact with functional spaces became interesting tangents that I began focussing on.聽
There are places around Sydney like empty business parks and old construction storage areas spotted throughout suburbia. I鈥檝e grown up often confused as to why these areas exist, and what type of people frequent them.聽
My final body of work features 3 oil paintings based on google photographed images of such areas in Sydney. I painted on found MDF board sitting in the garage and I decided to incorporate its functional wooden aesthetic into the works rather than try and make the board appear more canvas like. These pieces of board could be found in any of these half used warehouses or scrapyards, lying quietly in a corner, rarely to be interacted with again. I particularly enjoyed the composition of Car Yard, based on the satellite images of a scrapyard in north-west Sydney. What was particularly engaging for me about this piece Is the fact it鈥檚 been photographed as part of a formula to photograph earth from above, and without their intent, the organisers of said car yard have made an aesthetically engaging composition out of old cars. So many countless images exist already in the world, and to use existing ones for a purpose far from their practical content was a satisfying and interesting process. Some of the ideas I've touched upon this term have certainly inspired me to continue exploring areas and perspectives of the environment around me. 聽聽

During the week i鈥檝e continued to research images found from google street view. I decided to loosely apply the forms and shapes to create an oil painting on mdf board. After discussing making the work somehow a bit more personal last week with Claire I think I might try focus more on the satellite images to base my work from. Although I鈥檝e enjoyed sketching and painting these landscape forms, something about those arial images are just a bit more unique and engaging. In the upcoming week I will be focussing on painting images based on this birds eye view perspective.聽

Today I had a look through googles satellite view of the industrial areas of Sydney i鈥檝e been exploring from street view. I found a lot of symmetry and a lot of visually engaging compositions, as if the people on the ground knew what they would like like from above. I think something again about the figureless nature of these photos evoke the same feelings as my previous screenshots, perhaps these though have an extra voyeuristic layer of about them, one that brings with it more concepts of surveillance, industrialisation and construction. Millions of landscape photos taken from flying satellites above earth, a monumental network to say the least.聽

inspired by the landscapes of Carla Klein I鈥檝e been looking at areas that evoke a sense of emptiness/peacefulness/quietness/eeriness/abandonment/uselessness around Sydney. Due to the current circumstances I haven't been able to physically go inspect these areas, so instead I鈥檝e been taking screen shots of these areas on google street view. The fact these images of every street exist in Sydney/over the the world could be the catalyst for its own work, but it certainly has raised some interesting perspectives on the the paintings I will be completing.聽
The street view has characteristic perspective, at times the image is distorted and magnified. These images bring into question ideas of surveillance, and with regards to current circumstances this kind of virtual exploration has a new layer of relevance and realism. I wonder how many people have street viewed the crowded beaches of Sydney. 聽聽

A rummage through the garage has resulted in me finding some old thin MDF board that caught me eye. I think these will make up the support for my Assessment 2 BOW!

Macquarie Carpark 2, oil on foam board. Carla Kleins work usually focusses on spaces that are vast and empty, she avoids figures or cars or anything directly related to the movement of people. This choice leaves her work evoking a sense of stillness. I got the same feeling walking through a mostly empty carpark behind a shopping centre.聽

Macquarie carpark, oil on foam board, Carla Kleins work has motivated me to experiment with reduced colour pallets and focus on general form rather than accuracy of the shapes.
