Changeover day

Changing jobs every 4 months has got to be one of the best (but hardest) things about being a junior doctor. If you’ve not loved your job, you get to move on! And if you have loved it, well you get to go and try something new and learn new skills! You feel more like a real doctor with every rotation. And you’re so much more empathetic with the specialities you’ve worked with. No more bogus referrals and a much better working relationship with other departments. Win win!

On the Tuesday you feel like you’ve got your shit together. You know how things work. You can work the complex system. You’ve made lots of friends, and maybe some enemies too. You’re confident in your abilities. There are aspects of the job you’ve hated all along but all of a sudden you’re becoming sentimental and wishing you could stay. “Aw the shifts when I was covering A&E, 3 wards, maternity triage, labour ward and theatres were actually such great shifts. Loved them. It’s good to be kept on your toes!”

You always have great ambition to leave your clinical areas well organised, with a handover and a guide for the docs taking over from you to ease their transition. But then you realise that today is just as crazy and short-staffed as any other day and that all goes out the window. Keeping the patients alive another day will just have to be good enough.

Then it’s Wednesday. You feel like an absolute imposter. I can’t do this job. I’ve not got the first clue about what is wrong with you Madam. I better phone the reg, wait.. what’s her name again? Shoot, what’s the login for this computer? Where are the blood culture bottles? AHH I LOCKED MYSELF OUT THE WARD!!
