HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DAVID GATES, the confessional singer-songwriter best known for the band Bread. Formed with the talented Jimmy Griffin and Larry Knechtel, Bread were champions of the “soft rock” genre, though they weren’t soft in terms of production, playing chops, and song craft. In 1970 their second album ON THE WATERS (a riff on Ecclesiastes 11:1) sliced out 3 Top Ten hits, with “Make It With You” going #1. Prior to Bread, however, Gates was a busy man. His first band, The Accents, included Leon Russell, and they backed Chuck Berry in 1957. Gates went on to work with Captain Beefheart, Pat Boone, Bobby Darin, Duane Eddy, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, Brian Wilson, and Glenn Yarborough all while writing songs for other artists and ekeing out a solo career. In 1966 his song “Saturday’s Child” appeared on the first Monkees album (and popped up on their TV show). Touring with that song + hearing my pal Chris von Sneidern cover “Everything I Own” https://sircvs.bandcamp.com/track/everything-i-own led me to reappraise the music of David Gates—now a retired rancher in Washington and still married to his high school sweetheart since 1959.
Here’s a clip from 2011: I’m on tour with The Monkees, doing “Saturday’s Child” with sizzling lead guitar by Wayne Avers at his most Jeff Beck-ian. David Robicheau and Felipe Torres are also rockin’ it! I always had fun doing this song. Meanwhile, HB DG and thank you for cranking out such an amazing song catalogue.
