Something I've literally been thinking about for my entire life is how feminine coded Rabbit and Piglet from Winne the Pooh both are. Like, to the point that when I was a child I actively believed they were both girls despite reading all of the classic Pooh stories over and over enough times to definitely not miss the pronouns.
Piglet is pink and has so much anxious girl energy and Rabbit is the ultimate busybody housekeeper. It's cool that we get to see those traits in male characters, but it's always kind of left me wondering why A.A. Milne didn't just make them female--especially because the only actual female character is Kanga.

I daily desperately wish that we still talked like this.

Tremendous congratters and all that.

More things we should demand from the fashion industry...
I know we've all discussed the Pocket Problem at length, but another sexist problem I see is the thin fabric most pants are made out of. Don't get me wrong, I love a breezy pair of linen pants in the summer, but in the winter I want to have pants (especially my sweatpants) that are warm and cozy. Women prefer warmer temperatures to men, and I think it shouldn't be unreasonable for us to expect that we'll be warm enough with only one pair of pants--especially since layering under them often looks and feels bulky.

When I was a kid I had a vividly imagined story about a bunch of kids who lived in a house that was not only alive but like, a giant? Vaguely humanoid? One of the main things I remember was the idea of kids swinging on vines growing on the outside of the "house," not realizing they were hair...
phrases like "the house always wins" and "it's on the house" but used to imply that the building you're in is alive and personally invested in the situation

I haven't used this blog in...almost exactly a year. I just wanted to drop a little update that I'll be sharing some book reviews and similar soon.

My manuscript is complete! Yay! Now to work on some short stories that I've been meaning to get to, and for a deep, deep editing dive. Oh boy.

Just wanted to drop in with a manuscript status update. I'm currently working on the last scene before the epilogue (omg omg!) and have a current total of about 73,000 words. We are getting there.

Just wrote down all the things that still need to happen in my novel WIP. Eight things. That's an exciting and shivery feeling.

Just here to celebrate breaking 50,000 words on my new project *blows party horn* and that I also just wrote 70% of my word count goal this week all in one day.
Also this week I reached out to an author I know a little bit to ask for some advice about querying and she replied with some helpful tips and encouragement. All the party horns.

1400 words today! (Rounded.) I call that something to celebrate.
Of course, now, my temptation is always to start doing calculations like, if I can keep writing x words per week, then I should finish this manuscript in 80k minus *current wordcount* divided by x weeks! Which, in my experience, almost never comes to fruition. Still, even if I lowball my weekly average I could theoretically finish mid May of this year (assuming I don't have to stop and reform my plot too much) which is kind of an exciting thought.

After giving myself some time off from querying around the holidays, I am going back in. Ugh.

Well, I successfully finished out my year of writing every single day. And as part of my new years resolution, I decided to *not* just keep going with writing every single day for 2023. Instead, I'm aiming to still write most days, but not put the pressure on myself of having to write on every single day. More importantly, I'm going to strive to make sure I have longer chunks of time to do deep work writing blocks. That said, I've still written at least something every day of 2023. But it's knowing that I could not that makes the difference. I think.
Anyway, I've started a little writing accountability thing with an old friend who's also a writer--when we were kids we used to spend part of most of our play dates sitting in the closest with notebooks and chocolate, quietly writing. The goal is not only for both of us to be encouraged to write more (and stay in touch more!) but also, at least on my side, to feel reassured that someone else is also fighting the good fight. I made my goal to report 1500 words to my friend by the end of the day on Saturday, and I'm at 1166, so I think I'm definitely on track.
In addition to my current novel-in-progress, I've also started a fun little project where I write flash or short stories based on songs or pinterest boards that some of my friends sent me. I finished up a sweet little romantic flash for my friend J (they liked it! yay!) and am onto an earthy fantasy piece for my friend C. I'm hoping to finish that up tonight, right after I finish this update.
Merry 2023! Here's to a year of slowing down and enjoying things deeply, I hope.
