Whole lot better than that AI scrap I saw a few years ago that was like “Lord of the Rings if it was Asian” but it’s generic East Asian as seen through a Western lens (basically Chinese or Japanese) and more like a smashing of the pre-existing LotR movie with any Chinese/Cantonese movie that got popular in the West, as opposed to actually Chinese produced. I hated it so much because I could tell it was made by a Westerner who thinks they know Chinese stuff instead of someone who had made their 10th Sun Wukong drama. Granted, it spoke more volumes on the AI and coding. Insert reference to Coded Bias documentary here.

Here’s something interesting in a “languages evolve” sort of way. When referring to people close to your age (if not, then it’s considered polite), in Vietnamese, you call them sister or brother. The polite “you” pronouns sound like they’re in 3rd person but that’s how it is. (There is an actual pronoun for “you,” but it’s highly informal.) You talk to a man and you call him “anh”, literally means older brother. You talk to a woman and you call her “chị”, literally means older sister. If you ask for a singular gender-neutral pronoun, there isn’t any. Unfortunately. There is “họ,” meaning plural they. I don’t know how common it is as a singular.

Languages evolve and we make up words all the time. Some Vietnamese genius out there came up with the idea of smashing chị + anh = chanh. Coincidentally, lemon/lime in Vietnamese is chanh. 🍋 🍋‍🟩 Then some other genius out there said hey if you use 2 gendered pronouns to create a new pronoun, then here is one that’s not so binary gendered … cam. The Vietnamese word for orange. 🍊

If you are non-binary, genderqueer, or gender identity outside of cis, you can use chanh 🍋 🍋‍🟩 and cam 🍊. Super cute

Edit: It has come to my attention that the user displayed in the Reddit post (which i will not name because I don’t want to risk anything) is a controversial user and may or may not be a threat to the community. I say “may or may not” because I did not search for solid proof. Noted, my eyes hurt scrolling through the skinny tumblr search result of the name (tumblr format on iPad browser). Noted noted, some of the accusations presented against this user hurt my mood and I don’t want to continue. It is a real shame it has come to this.

I had a dream that butch latines started calling themselves “naranjas” and that femme latines would ask if they could have fruit from their tree as a way to let them know they were interested. And I think we should make this an actual thing because that’s so cute. It reminds me of the phrase “mi media naranja”

In the Rise of the Guardians movie, there is a scene where the Tooth Fairy grabbed the Easter Bunny’s boomerang 🪃 (her ally’s signature weapon) out of his scabbard. She did it in a moment of fury, directed at the Pitch Black, the Boogeyman.

In English, we used to say “your servant, sir/ma’am” like your most humble and obedient servant.

I giggled at Scottish and Vietnamese “cow,” because I remembered the “Scottish woman gets mad at Alexa” video. She insults Alexa “you stupid cow” and cow can be used as an insult in Vietnamese (bò) to mean “idiot.” Coincidence is “baka” in Japanese and Tagalog.

I told my sister of the dwarves Brokk and Sindri. She said it sounds like Brick and Cinder. Sindri <— Old Norse sindr (slag, meaning the waste of smelting) ≈ cinder <— Old English sinder (slag). Somehow, French cendre <— Latin cinis (ashes) also happened.

It is also possible Old Norse sindra = to sparkle, verb.

fun fact about languages: a linguist who was studying aboriginal languages of Australia finally managed to track down a native speaker of the Mbabaram language in the 60s for his research. they talked a bit and he started by asking for the Mbabaram word for basic nouns. They went back and forth before he asked for the word for “dog” The man replied “dog” They had a bit of a “who’s on first” moment before realizing that, by complete coincidence,  Mbabaram and English both have the exact same word for dog.
