I do believe it's fine to write romance/smut about aro/ace characters even if it's deeply annoying to me personally, but I also believe most fic writers would see a drastic fucking improvement in their writing if they had to write a fic with no romance or smut that focused on the actual canon character instead of completely overwriting their canon personality in order to slot them into Standard Tumblr Pairing Personality #4
#i know it’s only the opener to this post but the problem with most people writing about aro/ace characters in romantic and sexual#relationships/situations/etc aren’t actually interested in exploring what that looks like. they just want to see the Character#in Romance Dynamic and Sexual Dynamic#(being a little generous there by describing them as seperate when so many people treat sex as part of romance dynamic but whatever)#and part of me suspects it’s because they literally don’t know what to focus on without that if they’d even care to#plus whatever lingering weirdness they have about aromanticism and asexuality in general of course#i’ve literally seen it said ‘sorry i want the characters to CARE about eachother’#re: having the characters be romantically/sexually involved#and i think that nicely sums up what a lot of people seem to really think about it#people just don’t think platonic relationships can carry a story#or even have like. weight. value. significance.#a lot of people just don’t think you can explore or add anything (that isn’t romantic or sexual tension) to a relationship#that isn’t romantic and or sexual#idk sorry for the rambling in the tags i think op is aro/ace(?) so they’ve probably thought about all this before#and this was just a quick post complaining abt it#but yeah. as an aro/ace who Does Not Care abt romance/sex most of the time people’s refusal to value any other kinds of relationships#is deeply frustrating for like ‘veering into actual problems with societal attitudes about relationships’ reasons#but also stop decimating the results when i sort by gen and weed out whatever was missed it’s so irritating please and thank you

was talking to a coworker and realised i could not for the life of me remember his name but i was too embarrassed to ask because we've spoken multiple times so mid-conversation i started concocting a plan to nudge the conversation towards the ID photos on our building passes so that i could be like oh my ID photo is awful haha the camera they use to take these has a real talent for making me look as unphotogenic as possible and then he would say oh yes me too haha everyone says that (because they do) and then i would be able to say well let me see yours it can't be as bad as mine! and he would show me his ID because we are coworkers and why wouldn't he and this would allow me to see his building pass which of course would have his name on it and then i would be able to say well yours is perfectly nice it must be me that's the problem! and then we would have a polite chuckle about it and i would have his name without needing to ask for it and he would be none the wiser and all would be well but then before i could execute this fine plan a little voice in my head went "so this is some light yagami bull shit you are about to pull" which was such a violent reality check it shocked me completely out of my embarrassment and i went "hey im so sorry your name has slipped my mind could you remind me" and he did and it was fine.
