lookwhathappens: The Pain of Silence How can you let something so wonderful die without saying a word? from Anonymous to Mary, 10-12-2010 Several years ago in a public library I found this letter that speaks to the pain caused by silence. I don’t know Mary or what happened to her, but I do know the pain caused by silence. Please, if you have a estranged relationship with a fellow human being – family, friend, or lover – despite your own confusion, pain or indifference, remember he or she has a heart; even if you have nothing to say, consider at least saying that. Don’t let your silence create avoidable confusion, fear, and pain.

The Pain of Silence
How can you let something so wonderful die without saying a word?

To be sensual, I think, is to respect and rejoice in the force of life, of life itself, and to be present in all that one does, from the effort of loving to the breaking of bread.
James Baldwin, “Down at the Cross: Letter from a Region in my Mind” in The Fire Next Time  (The word present is in italics in the original text.)

Do not try to save the whole world or do anything grandiose. Instead, create a clearing in the dense forest of your life and wait there patiently, until the song that is your life falls into your own cupped hands and you recognize and greet it. Only then will you know how to give yourself to this world so worth of rescue.
Clearing - Martha Postlewaite
A fantastic poem Tara Branch recited during a dharma talk at ATSMS in Santa Monica friday

I Live My Life in Widening Circles
by Rainer Maria Rilke
I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world. I may not complete this last one but I give myself to it. I circle around God, around the primordial tower. I’ve been circling for thousands of years and I still don’t know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a great song?

On Some Other Planet You May Be Right
“On some other planet you may be right, but not here.” In the middle of talking you shifted to a silent weeping, as people shift from blue to black in the middle of a letter when a pen goes dry, or as they used to change horses during a journey. Talk grew tired, tears are fresh.
Seeds of summer flew into the room we were sitting in. In front of the window there was an almond tree growing black: one more warrior in the eternal battle of the sweet against the bitter.
Look, just as time isn’t inside clocks love isn’t inside bodies: bodies only tell the love.
But we will remember this evening the way swimmers remember the strokes from one summer to the next. “On some other planet you may be right, but not here.”
by Yehuda Amichai translated from Hebrew by Chana Bloch

To be human means to dwell in the openness of time, in defiance of the oblivion of nature, and hence to be governed by memory.
