One of my favorite things about Bail Organa is the fact that he never lost faith in the Jedi.

He personally went to the Jedi Temple when it was on fire just to see if the Jedi needed help. He witnessed the death of a Jedi youngling at the hands of the clone troopers and barely managed to escape with his own life.

He is the only senator who knew Palpatine was Darth Sidious, a secret he had to carry with him because he knew more than anyone else just how dangerous Palpatine really and truly was. Revealing that knowledge would have proven to the Emperor that he knew of at least one Jedi survivor.

He adopted the daughter of a fallen Jedi and kept her true parentage hidden from the Empire because he knew Palpatine would do anything he could to turn the children of Anakin Skywalker into his own personal weapons. Leia's faith in the Jedi was cemented when Obi-Wan Kenobi (an old friend of her father's) rescued her from the Empire at 10-years-old.

He was one of the very first rebels within the senate. He held onto the secrets of several Order 66 survivors, the knowledge that Vader was Anakin, that Palpatine was Sidious, rebel cells throughout the galaxy, Fulcrum's true identity, the locations for both Skywalker children. He possessed knowledge that Palpatine would have gladly tortured out of him.

He managed to get away with helping the rebellion despite the fact that the Empire was always watching him, and when he died, all of those important secrets died with him.

It was a fascinating casting (and set design? worldbuilding?) decision to make the people of Ghorman not only posher, richer than Ferrix or Aldhani, in terms of their architecture and costuming and overall material culture, but also largely whiter. Ferrix is an industrial-scrapyard city, Aldhani is loosely based off the Scottish Highlands, a place of rural shepherds and goatherds, but Ghorman is a well-known, highly visible exporter of high-status luxury goods. It's harder to disappear Ghor because people know and care about the Ghor in ways they don't know or care about the Dhani. They are visible and high status: they can still be killed or deported, but it cannot be done without a good and credible and controlled narrative. They are "just like us" and it takes the Empire concerted effort to make them into a "them." And to convey this in-universe fact, the showrunners decided that their city looks like France with a hint of North Italy, they have little cafés, their costumes are vaguely mid-century French, they speak Obvious Space French, and many of the actors are white French, or other Europeans with like very Old World faces.

Interesting worldbuilding choice, that's all.

I think one of the reasons Bail does not work for me in Andor is because the character of Bail Organa as he has been in pretty much everything else we have ever seen him in just doesn't WORK within the world of Andor for many of the same reasons that the Jedi and Sith characters don't fit within that world and its parameters.

Andor, far more so than even Rogue One, lives in an extremely morally gray world where your hero characters regularly do unconscionable things. Andor wanted to posit that many good people fighting for righteous causes will need to do some bad things in order to reach that goal, and it puts them up against characters like Syril and Dedra who are doing exactly the same thing but for a different cause and asks the audience to consider why one of them is still clearly a good guy and the other clearly a bad guy. This is something that's a LITTLE more difficult to do when you're dealing with the larger cosmic themes of the Skywalker saga and psychic space wizards where the sides are quite literally color coded for you. The Jedi and Sith exist in the world of the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy where the rebellion is undeniably full of good, heroic people and the Empire undeniably full of evil megalomaniacs or footsoldiers who tell themselves that they're "just following orders."

Andor isn't telling that story and it needed many of those kinds of characters to be removed from its story in order to tell it correctly without the waters getting muddied. This is why we never get to SEE characters like Palpatine or Anakin or the Ghost crew or Quinlan Vos or anyone else who's canonically wandering around at this time period. This is why Luthen was never going to be a Jedi of any kind, former or otherwise.

But the Jedi and Sith characters weren't the only ones who existed within that more black and white world. Bail Organa did, too.

Bail Organa has pretty regularly been represented as a paragon of justice and truth and bravery and strength and resilience and heroism. Bail Organa is a beacon of light and hope for the future. He is the one whose image you see when you join the rebellion, greeting you with a smile on his face and kind words on his lips. That's why Rogue One chose to play the literal FORCE THEME when he walks into frame for the first time. Jimmy Smits doesn't even have any lines for that entire scene, but he walks out of the shadows to those few notes from THAT THEME and it's like a hero of legend just showed up for a moment. THAT'S who Bail Organa is within the story of Star Wars. He's not morally gray, he's not someone who can truly exist within a story that wants to question how far the rebellion can go before it becomes the enemy it's trying to destroy. That's not the purpose of a character like Bail Organa, and to try to turn him INTO that kind of a character is to misunderstand how to utilize him.

Bail Organa never should've been in Andor. He can be MENTIONED, it's his rebellion after all, and Mon Mothma would know him and have spoken to him, obviously. But I think having Bail Organa in Andor as a larger presence was a mistake, and it's why many of the scenes with him in them just didn't quite hit right for me. The quick cameo where he's leaving Sculdun's party and says hello to Mon as she's coming in is fine, having him introduce Mon for her speech is fine, but all of the extra things he's in just seem to add more confusion to his character and to the story than any real depth and it took away from the opportunity to explore the characters who were more relevant to the story they WERE trying to tell (like Perrin, or Luthen, or Bix, or Cinta, or Vel). Those precious few minutes they had after condensing four seasons into one were misspent on a character who didn't fit within the story they were trying to tell. Forcing Bail into a position where he's morally gray just simply isn't the best use of the character or their time.

genevieve o'reilly's performance as mon mothma is, quite possibly, my favorite performance in all of star wars. she has brought such life and depth to this iconic character, who, when she first appeared in the original trilogy, hardly existed at all. genevieve o'reilly has been playing this character for two decades now, and before andor, she had been given crumbs, and those crumbs were largley cut, and still, even then, she brought such incredible grace and power to this role. it's truly remarkable, and she deserves all the praise in the world

The one thing Andor did that had me cackling is showing how utterly ridiculous Bail Organa is. Like Luthen has 8000 secret identities and Mon Mothma is tweaking out all the time and meanwhile Bail is rolling up with C3PO and R2D2 and his multiple Jedi contacts and his force sensitive daughter and his rebel cell that keeps blowing up star destroyers and literally no one in the empire ever does anything about it I love him

Jedi culture & community fics, my beloved! They're a bit of a rare breed for what you're specifically looking for, specifically focusing on positive Jedi worldbuilding, so if anyone has genfic recs outside of the ones I know, please feel free to add them! But these should help scratch that itch for you, each of them has at least some focus on Jedi philosophy or how Jedi interact with each other or the lessons they teach! It's been awhile since I've read some of them, so there might be some that aren't quite as in-line with how I see the Jedi these days, but they're all ones I felt portrayed them pretty positively and they're all genfic (except one that I made an exception for) and all really lovely fics I remember enjoying for the Jedi worldbuilding aspects! There's one thing in Star wars fanfiction that I've seen for the past few years that still seriously throws me off : the characterisation of Anakin Skywalker

Actually I'm pretty sure I have a hard time seeing him in a kinder light because of it. And please hear me out before killing me in the comments.

Why is he written as so gullible and childish so often ?? Give the man some agency over his thoughts and actions, the corny dialogue from the prequels shouldn't mean that everything that about him feels like a preteen ! The Clone Wars showed us he behaves like a young adult (especially in the later seasons) !

He's owed some emotional maturity that actually matches his age, ESPECIALLY with what comes with being a war general and raising a teenager. He's competent and very capable of complex/critical thinking, Vader didn't become an efficient warlord overnight, he was all of those things before albeit much less corrupted by anger and hatred !

I've been thinking about how being a Force empath can big time screw with the way you perceive people and social cues, but as a neurodivergent 20yo who also struggles with this whole socialising thing, I'm still having a hard time seeing him as poor clueless baby uwu.

Emotional balance is hard to achieve for sure, that doesn't mean he's a doll to be filled by other characters' opinions the second he interact with them.

And I'm not saying he should be entirely cast off and left to rot or something ! That man needs so much therapy let's be real, like a proper sit down and talk about being groomed and manipulated, but in an adult way. You wouldn't like being treated like or thought as an angry teen the minute you open your mouth ? Well don't do it to him !

I guess my best point of comparison about that is how Aayla Secura is usually written vs how Anakin is. They're nearly the same age with VERY similar backgrounds and they very likely grew up near eachother with their respective masters being friends and all. And yet Aayla is characterised according to her age, Anakin isn't.

And I'm not discarding the whole "creep Chancellor having access to a literal child alone for years" thing, which is terrible on its own ! I'm mostly saying these two things can cohabit without cancelling eachother out.

The other part of the conversation is how treating him like a child is just an excuse to spread anti Jedi views but that's not something I feel like talking about in this post.

TL;DR : Anakin Skywalker deserves to be treated with the emotional maturity he has in fandom works, he needs more agency over his thoughts and actions like the nuanced human being he is.

Also being pro-Jedi and being pro-Anakin shouldn't be as opposed as it feels in the fandom.
