Dear college students: an A is not the only good grade

That's the tl;dr. I am taking a break from grading because recently I had one student say they submitted incomplete work at the last minute because they were "so discouraged" about the grades on their previous assignments. They were consistently earning Bs. I had another student earn a C on their first paper because it had no thesis; I offered encouraging feedback on how fixing that one thing would boost the overall grade significantly on the next. The next I got from them was AI-generated.

Anyway. My takeaway from this (as part of a much larger pattern in which students will even drop courses because they aren't on track to earn As) is that a lot of students somehow become convinced that they're failing if they're earning average or even good grades, if those grades don't make the benchmarks for excellent work. This is frankly bizarre to me. It also suggests depressing things about the number of students who embrace a fixed rather than a growth mindset, but that's another topic.

It's funny how when you're a kid you see your parents and their friends in their 30s and think wow these are grownups, I guess I become grownup at some point. but now you're 30 and you do things like ride on the front handlebars of your friend's bike at midnight on a rainy Brooklyn street or make dumbass music and side to side into people one night a week and like. You don't have to be grown up at all really you can just do this forever

Some pics I took today! Today was an extremely taxing day. I had to go to the company I worked as intern in since HR requested my presence on a matter about my certificate last time. And had to go to the review center for review and studied in a nearby cafe but stopping by Angkong as recommended by a friend to try out their fried dumplings. It was good and honestly worth the price. Went to a small cafe and studied to pass the time of rush hour since it's Friday again in the metro. Anyways, off to rest since tomorrow I have graduation photos.

The heat is intense today at Metro Manila, the news last night it'll be rainy but there was not even a cloud in sight. Currently at the review center now, I missed a class last time it was all about leaching and I haven't had the chance to study for it. Well then, today's lesson is about liquid-loquif extraction so I need to focus later!
