Undine froze. The girl's eyes grew dim, her smile faded, and tears rolled down her cheeks - the last drops of life, which were negligible in comparison with the endless salty sea, in which they dissolved into sea foam, which first absorbed the broken heart, and then covered it with a soft blanket. the body of Undine, who once fell in love with the sea prince.

The girl's heart beat even faster than before, her eyes shone, and her lips were touched by the most beautiful and gentle smile in the world. Undine, without wasting a second, rushed to her, to her dream.

Calling out to the mermaid, she poured out her feelings to him with all her joy, sincerity and love. And then Ondine looked hopefully into his beautiful eyes. But they were as cold as an iceberg and as empty as an abyss. After all, newts are dumb fish without a heart, empty creatures of the sea, in whose bodies a soul has never lived in a single century.

The girl's legs turned into a beautiful emerald tail. At first, Undine, screaming in surprise, jumped back in fright. But quickly pulling herself together, she wiggled her fin with curiosity and smiled. Now she was sure that the distance to happiness is equal to the outstretched hand, it remains only to catch it. And, feeling an incredible surge of strength, the girl went to conquer the depths of the sea without fear.

For exactly three days Undine sailed on the waves of the sea in search of her newt. She did not feel tired or hungry, and all her thoughts were striving forward into a happy joint future with her chosen one.

"What if…"

The words of the sorceress hung over the poor girl like an alarming shadow until morning.

"Nonsense! My love can overcome everything, otherwise my heart would not be beating so hard, dreaming of breaking out! " - thought Ondine and, having drunk the broth, jumped through the sea surface, dividing her world into "before" and "after".

The same one, apparently appreciating the determination and despair in the eyes of the girl, began to look for the necessary recipe, rustling with old books and muttering something quietly.

Exactly thirteen quarters of an hour later, the potion was ready. All this time, Undine gazed with awe at her reflection in the cauldron and imagined a bright and happy future with a beautiful sea creature. The witch, laughing again and handing the jar, suddenly spoke in a serious, almost threatening voice:

- Remember, child, having drunk the potion at dawn, you will immediately turn into a mermaid, but if your chosen one rejects you, your heart will turn into sea foam, and you will be with him ...

In it, in front of the fireplace, idly turning over the pages of an old book and swaying in an armchair to the beat of the cat's rumbling, sat the mistress of the lighthouse. The witch, immediately sensing the presence of the girl, asked:

- What brings you, child?

- Please… turn me into a mermaid!

The witch laughed out loud:

- Why do you need this, dear?

- I met love!

The mistress of the lighthouse shook her head unkindly, continuing to open her mouth in an insane smile. Undine was not in the mood to retreat and, despite her fear, she forbade herself to look away from the witch.

In it, in front of the fireplace, idly turning over the pages of an old book and swaying in an armchair to the beat of the cat's rumbling, sat the mistress of the lighthouse. The witch, immediately sensing the presence of the girl, asked:

- Why do you need this, dear?

- I met love!

The mistress of the lighthouse shook her head unkindly, continuing to open her mouth in an insane smile. Undine was not in the mood to retreat and, despite her fear, she forbade herself to look away from the witch.

All week she could not find a place for herself, and her heart relentlessly tapped out: "ON-ON-ON", literally driving the young girl crazy. And so, towards the evening of the eighth day of her throwing, her legs themselves led Ondine to the old lighthouse, where a witch lived, who, according to the townspeople, could work miracles for a small fee.

That morning was the same as thousands of others, but it was this, it would seem, gave her new wings. Sailing near the sea rocks, she saw the most beautiful creature in the world - a newt.

I saw - and fell in love at first sight. In pale, almost transparent, skin, dark curls and eyes, which each time more and more pulled her to the deep bottom of the unknown. Undine woke up only when the smooth shark skin of the rusal's tail disappeared behind the water surface.

It was a long time ago, no one, probably, will even remember: neither that lonely city, nor that lonely sea, and even less so that lonely girl that all the townspeople called Undine, because she lived on the shore in an old fishing hut. She had little contact with the residents and almost never smiled.

Every morning, with the first rays of the sun, Undine set out to sea in a small boat. Just as she cast the line, the corners of her lips slightly lifted from warm memories. It seemed to her that through the sound of the waves, she still heard the magic melody that her father whistled, luring the largest fish from the seabed.
