Hello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura!
We’re approaching the 2/3rds mark of the series’ volume count as we head into the first half of the 11th omnibus! Not only that, we’re entering one of the strongest periods for the series to date, and this volume in particular is filled with classic chapters that offered so much to talk about that we went on for two hours on just the first half alone! We had good reason to, however, as we discuss iconic stories like the “Blue-White Flames of Anger” arc and pivotal character-building chapters centered on Ataru and Lum’s relationship like “The Glove of Love and Conflict” and the deceptively emotional “Lum Becomes a Cow!” We also discuss the various hilarious chapters in-between, from the absurdly extravagant festive farce of Mendo’s Christmas Party to transformation antics gone unthinkably wrong! We also spend a lot of time discussing recurring themes and notable details that pervade the series in these chapters, like Kosuke and Torajima becoming more prominent, the Ryunosuke/Shinobu ship, the differences between Lum and Oyuki as alien royalty, the shift in Lum’s relationships with both her friend group and Shinobu, and a whole lot more! It’s a podcast stuffed full of surprises and while we haven’t hidden a bomb inside, we still think you’ll have a blast!

Well, technically we already returned in last month’s episode, but there was actually a year-long break in between recording that and this episode! Think of it as like how there was a break between Viz’s original publication of “Lum” that prompted their continuation being re-titled “The Return of Lum.” Except we’re not re-titling this podcast; it didn’t work in the 90’s and it ain’t happening now.
Anyways, because it’d been so long since AC and I recorded the show, we decided to spend this episode going through all the UY volumes Viz has released in the past year and share our thoughts on them! We discuss our favorite chapters, characters, the translation, lettering, and pretty much everything! Oh, and you KNOW we ranted about the whole “Hot Springs Emblem” situation. I really hope Viz reconsiders that name…
Afterward, we dive into the Urusei Yatsura fan community, exploring its history and current state now! Look forward to our next episode where we’ll dive into our experiences collecting Urusei Yatsura merch and memorabilia!
Oh, and of course, if you haven’t heard the news that Discotek has relicensed the Urusei Yatsura movies and plans to release them on streaming and blu-ray later this year – yeah, that’s happening! We’re more than excited and looking forward to discussing the new and the films in future episodes!

Long-time listeners may remember that I previously recorded a spin-off podcast called #LumSquad last year where I and my friend AC discussed the first volume of Viz’s new omnibus edition and explored some of the series’ history there. But we always intended to cover Urusei Yatsura on Manga Mavericks as well, and we’ve got a great balance of first-time readers and long-time fans on today to talk about it; our good friend and frequent guest Vix, and first-time guest Dawn from the Anime Nostalgia Podcast!
Together we discuss how we got into the series, mine and Dawn’s thoughts revisiting the early parts of the series, and Vix and Colton’s impressions as first-time readers. We also explore the differences between Viz’s original 90’s releases of the manga and the new editions, and Dawn shares anecdotes about AnimEigo’s release of the anime and being a UY fan in the early 90s! Plus, we rant about a certain inexplicable name change, gush over the possibilities of a modern UY anime, and share our favorite chapters from these early volumes! All in all, we spend over two hours celebrating the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s magnum opus!
But wait, there’s more! If you’re looking for more thoughts on the Urusei Yatsura anime, check out the second episode of #LumSquad! AC and I explore the anime’s production history, how the show changes over its run, the incredible production staff and vocal talent on the show, and tons more! Just like this show, we spend over two and a half hours discussing the series, and we’ve barely even scratched the surface of what we wanted to talk about! Urusei Yatsura is a treasure trove offering a wealth of topics to explore, and I’m really excited to talk more about the series and everything I love about it in future episodes of #LumSquad!

Since we covered the manga on our first episode, for our second installment we’re diving deep into the anime! We explore the anime’s production history, how the show changes over its run, the incredible production staff and vocal talent on the show, and tons more! Plus, we rant about Mamoru Oshii’s influence and question common assertions made about the show’s quality, while sharing some thoughts on the show’s eclectic musical score. To top it off, we answer a ton of fan questions, and talk about our favorite episodes of the show! All in all, we spend two and a half hours discussing the anime, and we’ve barely even scratched the surface of stuff we plan to cover in future episodes!
Thank you guys so much for being patient with this and looking forward to more #LumSquad! We received a lot of enthusiasm for the first episode and a lot of people asking about when the second would come out over the past months, and I hope you’ll enjoy this episode enough to forgive the wait!

http://all-comic.com/2019/lum-squad-01-hello-darlings/ Hello darlings! We’re the #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! As longtime Manga Mavericks fans know, Urusei Yatsura is LumRanmaYasha’s favorite manga, and they’ve been wanting to make a podcast about it for a long time. Teamed up together with AC, the leader of Twitter’s #LumSquad and the #DailyLum, we’re starting up a new monthly podcast dedicated to discussing the series! In our inaugural episode, we introduce ourselves, our history with the series, and our thoughts on the first volume of Viz Media’s new omnibus editions of the series! Plus, we analyze the complicated character of the lecherous simpleton Ataru Moroboshi, and answer a ton of Q&As, including what episodes we’d recommend to newcomers and how…”effable” is Mendou! Let’s put weird and weird together, because space is super weird, and we’re going to talk about it! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @Lum_Squad, on tumblr at lumsquad.tumblr.com, and subscribe to us on Youtube! You can follow the hosts on twitter at @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally.
