WRITING CHARACTERS TIPS
If you already have details for the character (ex: they like classical music), ask why. It helps to flesh out the character (ex: their older sister used to play it while they had tea parties, they play it when they miss her)
Make your characters want things, that want controls their actions. Also, MAKE IT MATTER! What's stopping them from getting it? What happens (or what do they think will happen) if they don't get it?
Most of the time strengths and weaknesses are the same thing. Your character may be a strong leader and that's great sometimes, but they can also become (or seem) bossy/controlling.
You are not creating real people; you are making the illusion of one. Don't be afraid to play God. Sure, you can throw events at characters to force them to make that decision, or you can make them the kind of person who would do it anyway. You don't have to know they're favorite food, unless it would come up in the story. Include some details, but make sure they have a purpose (see tip 1)
The characters first line should say something about them and they're last line of the story should say something about them. I like to use it to show how they changed.

I remember seeing this post about the idea of a character who, instead of nursing a secret soft side in their abuse, are simply nothing but masks down to their core. nothing but an empty shell of themselves.
now I’m obsessed with this concept. There’s so much you can do with this because like was sacrificing who they are worth it in the end? Was creating utter isolation in order to protect themselves worth sacrificing the ability to love? Do they still have the capacity to rebuild themselves or was that sacrificed too?
The concept of trauma response in fiction is so fascinating to me because you can create circumstances that are unfeasible in reality and force a character of your own creation to endure it as an experiment.
Like I want to write you into an empty shell of yourself so I’m gonna give you the worst life imaginable.

Characters who are so compassionate that it borders on self-sacrifice. Characters who are so broken by the cruelty of the world that they make it their mission to save as many people as they can. Characters who don't know how to and don't want to be selfish. Characters who are collapsing on themselves but still devote themselves to others' wellbeing. Characters who hate themselves but have an uncanny ability to see past others' scars and mistakes.
Just... characters who are so hellbent on being kind to others that they don't notice their own self-destruction.

one of my favorite tropes if when a character goes from a weapon to a guard dog. like. they forced you to have this strength and they made you do unspeakable things with it. they made you train. they only kept you because you had a use to them. then you left. you grew. you found someone to trust. you lend them your strength to protect them. you trust that they won’t leave you when you’re weak. you give them your reins and you don’t doubt them for a second. you know you can take your leash back anytime yet you let them hold onto you. can anyone hear me i’m going insane.

I love a ship that consists of 2 grumpy, bitter, sour, and salty assholes. They aren’t just soulmates... they’re saltmates. 🥰

when the piece of media explores themes of humanity versus monstrosity. on one hand, it’s “how far can I go before I am just as monstrous as those I deem my enemies? the further i go the more certain i am that i’ve crossed a line. am I even human anymore?” and on the other hand it’s “was the monster always a monster? what makes it evil, what makes it inhuman? what has it done that i fear it?”
in both cases it is “i am looking at the creature I am fighting and i see a mirror of myself. was i always this way? was it always this way?”

they're divorced. they weren't even married. this isn't romantic. they're definitely not platonic. they're cinematic parallels. they are fighting the narrative. they slowly built their relationship. they rely and trust each other. they were aggressively thrown into this. they want to bite each other's head off. they kill for each other. they live for each other. they should kiss. they would put each other in a blender. they're insane. they don't even realise. they're fully aware of it.

Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone's a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.

A solid snow pack makes it difficult for bluebirds to find food which is not good but it brings them out of the park to visit the suet here and I like seeing them.
