Kenya Expands Petroleum Pipeline to Boost Regional Fuel Trade
Kenya is advancing plans to expand its petroleum transportation network by extending the Eldoret-Kampala-Kigali pipeline, aiming to enhance fuel supply across East Africa. The project targets regional partners, including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan, to facilitate efficient distribution of refined petroleum products.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, speaking during the unveiling of a new pump station in Ngema, Nakuru County, said the initiative will solidify Mombasa’s role as the region’s primary and most cost-effective fuel gateway.
Tumblr media
"Uganda is fully utilizing the corridor, while Rwanda is at 70 percent. Extending the pipeline from Eldoret will integrate more countries, driving sustainable development and economic prosperity across the region," Wandayi stated.
The newly commissioned pump station, developed by the Kenya Pipeline Corporation (KPC) at a cost of KSh 1.3 billion ($10.9 million), will increase the product flow rate along the 14-inch western Kenya pipeline from 330 cubic meters per hour to 510 cubic meters per hour — a 69 percent boost.
The project, part of the second phase of the Line IV (Nairobi-Eldoret) Capacity Enhancement Project initiated in 2022, follows the installation of pumping stations at Nairobi Terminal (PS21) and Nakuru (PS24).
KPC Managing Director Joe Sang revealed plans to further optimize the pipeline’s flow rate to 757 cubic meters per hour upon completion of the third upgrade phase. He also highlighted an upcoming reconfiguration of the Nairobi Terminal to a 2+1 mode, ensuring uninterrupted operations with two pumps running and one on standby.
"This achievement demonstrates the growing capacity of local expertise," Sang said, commending Strata Industrial Ltd, the Kenyan contractor responsible for the project.
Strata Industrial Managing Director Francis Njogu praised the collaboration, noting, "This project proves that indigenous companies can deliver major infrastructure projects on time and within budget."
The expansion aligns with KPC’s long-term strategy to modernize petroleum infrastructure, reinforcing Kenya's position as a regional petroleum hub and strengthening economic ties within the East African Community.

EU Team Raises Alarm Over Slow Electoral Reforms in Kenya
The European Union Election Follow-up Mission (EU EFM) has raised concerns over the sluggish pace of electoral reforms in Kenya, just two and a half years before the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Nairobi, EU EFM head Ivan Stefanec highlighted the lack of progress in implementing key recommendations made by the EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) after the 2022 elections.
“We’ve observed limited advancement in adopting the recommendations provided by our mission in 2022,” Stefanec stated.
Tumblr media
The delay in appointing new commissioners to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was cited as a major concern. According to Stefanec, this has stalled critical electoral processes, including pending by-elections, boundary reviews, and continuous voter registration.
“The IEBC’s reconstitution must not face further delays, and adequate funding should be allocated promptly to facilitate preparations for the 2027 elections,” he urged.
The EU deployed the follow-up mission earlier this month to evaluate Kenya's progress in electoral reforms. Stefanec noted that of the 21 recommendations outlined in the EU EOM’s 2022 final report, only one—the IEBC Amendment Act—had seen significant progress.
While acknowledging the role of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) in shaping electoral reforms, Stefanec pointed out that many recommendations, such as activating the campaign finance law and ensuring freedom of expression, remain unaddressed.
Priority reforms identified by the EU Observer Mission include:
Adequate funding for continuous voter education. Regular audits and consultations for electoral technology. Implementation of the Election Campaign Financing Act. Clear definitions of hate speech aligned with international standards. Repeal of restrictive sections of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act. Streamlined procedures for tallying center operations.
Stefanec emphasized the importance of establishing an independent and functional IEBC well ahead of the next elections, a sentiment echoed by multiple stakeholders.
The EU team also extended condolences following the passing of former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.

AfricaIRA Empowers Taita Taveta MSMEs with Insurance Awareness Training
Sixty Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Taita Taveta County have completed a two-day training on insurance awareness and risk management, organized by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA).
The initiative aimed to equip entrepreneurs with essential knowledge on insurance products, business sustainability, and strategies to mitigate financial risks. IRA's Director of Market Conduct, Anne Chelagat, emphasized that many MSMEs remain vulnerable due to inadequate risk management practices.
Tumblr media
According to a recent IRA study, 63% of Kenyan MSMEs lack insurance coverage, relying instead on informal methods that expose them to financial shocks. The training sought to bridge this gap by promoting a proactive approach to risk mitigation.
The 2023 Insurance Industry Report highlights that Taita Taveta is among 40 counties contributing only 7% of Kenya’s total insurance premiums, compared to Nairobi's 82.3%. IRA hopes that localized consumer education will boost insurance uptake and strengthen financial resilience among MSMEs.
Participants gained insights into assessing insurance needs, selecting suitable products, and integrating risk management into their business operations. IRA plans to expand such initiatives across the country to enhance informed decision-making within the MSME sector.

KQ Partners with London Metropolitan University to Boost Aviation Training
Kenya Airways (KQ) has signed a partnership with London Metropolitan University to establish a world-class aviation training center at the Pride Centre in Nairobi. The collaboration aims to equip aviation professionals in Kenya and the wider African region with globally recognized skills.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, who witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, highlighted the partnership as a milestone in bridging the skills gap in the aviation sector. He emphasized that while Kenya serves as a regional aviation hub, it faces a shortage of technical and vocational training institutions.
Tumblr media
“This partnership is a crucial step toward addressing the skills gap in Kenya’s aviation industry while enhancing our competitiveness in the global aerospace economy,” Ogamba stated.
The collaboration will provide aspiring aviation professionals with access to internationally recognized qualifications. CS Ogamba noted that Kenya currently lacks university-level aviation degree programs, leaving many with limited opportunities to advance locally.
The Kenya Airways Pride Centre, certified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), has been pivotal in aviation training since 2007. Ogamba praised the institution for setting high standards in aviation education, emphasizing that a skilled workforce is key to economic growth.
“Expanding access to world-class aviation education will directly contribute to Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals, ensuring a globally competitive workforce,” he added.
Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr. Korir Sing’oei, represented by Ambassador Joseph Masila, commended the initiative, saying it aligns with Kenya Airways’ transformation as the Pride of Africa. He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting inclusive access to quality aviation training.
London Metropolitan University Vice-Chancellor Julie Hall expressed pride in the partnership, encouraging Kenyans to seize the opportunity. “With the Ministry of Education’s support, this collaboration will open doors for many aspiring aviation professionals,” she said.
KQ CEO Allan Kilavuka reaffirmed the airline’s dedication to future-focused training. “This MoU symbolizes our commitment to delivering quality aviation education for the region,” he stated.
The partnership is expected to strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional aviation leader while providing pathways for professionals to excel in the global aviation industry.

Speaker Wetang’ula Urges Unity and Transparent Leadership at Mzee Mkweha's Funeral
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called for national unity and transparent governance while paying tribute to Mzee Kingi Mwaruwa Mkweha, father of Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, in Kilifi County.
Speaking during the funeral, Wetang’ula praised Mzee Mkweha's life of service and sacrifice, urging Kenyans to embrace similar values. “His life reminds us of the importance of unity, wisdom, and community dedication,” he stated.
Tumblr media
The Speaker also emphasized the need to rally behind Kenyan leaders vying for international positions, including Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship. “Success is defined not by falling but by how quickly we rise,” Wetang’ula noted, highlighting Kenya’s history of producing global leaders.
Addressing recent criticism about government communication, Wetang’ula defended the administration's duty to keep citizens informed. “Government is not an advertising agency, but it must communicate its progress transparently,” he remarked, responding to comments from Archbishop Anthony Muheria.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi echoed these sentiments, stressing that public participation is a constitutional requirement, not propaganda. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki further emphasized unity and hard work as key drivers of national progress.
Wetang’ula concluded with a call for patriotism, urging Kenyans to embrace Mzee Mkweha’s legacy of integrity, service, and community development.

CS Kagwe Calls for 10-Year Jail Term for Fake Seed and Fertilizer Dealers
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has proposed strict penalties for those selling counterfeit seeds and fertilizers, advocating for a mandatory 10-year jail term without the option of a fine.
Addressing the National Assembly’s Agriculture Committee alongside Principal Secretary Dr. Paul Rono, Kagwe emphasized the need for tougher legislation, labeling fake agricultural inputs as a threat to national food security.
Tumblr media
“When farmers plant counterfeit seeds, they lose months of effort and their families suffer,” Kagwe stated. He urged MPs to pass reforms that would criminalize such activities, ensuring culprits face significant jail time.
The proposal follows increased reports of farmers falling victim to fraudulent vendors, causing widespread financial losses and poor harvests. If adopted, the new laws would mark a major step toward protecting farmers and strengthening Kenya’s agricultural sector.

JKIA Named Africa's Top Cargo Airport in Global Awards
Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has clinched the title of African Cargo Airport of the Year at the prestigious STAT Times International Awards for Excellence in Air Cargo. This recognition underscores the airport's pivotal role in facilitating trade and logistics across the continent.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) hailed the achievement, calling it a landmark moment for Kenya’s largest airport. The award reflects JKIA’s commitment to operational efficiency, innovation, and continuous improvement in cargo handling.
Tumblr media
Cargo Hub for Africa JKIA remains a vital hub for air cargo in Africa, handling 112,000 tonnes of cargo in the first quarter of 2024 alone. In 2023, the airport processed 372,249 tonnes, solidifying its status as a leading cargo gateway.
Cargo operations also play a significant role in Kenya's economy. In 2023, Kenya Airways (KQ) earned Ksh12.46 billion from cargo services, representing 7% of its total revenue of Ksh178 billion.
Beating Regional Giants JKIA outperformed major African competitors, including Cairo International Airport (Egypt) and O.R. Tambo International Airport (South Africa), further cementing its regional dominance. However, on the global stage, JKIA’s cargo volumes remain modest compared to airports like Hong Kong International, which led globally in 2023 by handling over 4.3 million metric tonnes.
Adding to a Growing List of Accolades This latest win adds to JKIA’s expanding collection of awards. In October 2024, the airport was crowned Africa’s Leading Airport at the World Travel Awards, triumphing over top contenders like Cape Town International, Casablanca Mohammed V, Julius Nyerere, and Kigali International Airports.
Kenya's Aviation Sector on the Rise Kenya’s aviation sector continues to shine globally. Alongside JKIA’s triumph, Kenya secured several other prestigious accolades in 2024, including:
Africa’s Leading Airline: Kenya Airways Africa’s Leading Airline – Business Class: Kenya Airways Africa’s Leading Airline Brand: Kenya Airways Africa’s Leading Business Travel Destination: Nairobi City
While Tanzania was recognized as Africa’s Leading Destination, JKIA’s latest victory reinforces Kenya’s position as a regional leader in trade, travel, and logistics.
