now that it’s basically canon that sebastian gets out of the blacksite via innoinc submarine, i'm thinking about an au split off of who i see where he doesn’t go to see you until after innoinc reverses the mutations done to his body.

chapter one would pretty much go the same way with your hallucinations and long term grief. except, instead of sebastian poking his head out of the water or even just watching you straight up for weeks, you get a knock on your door.

you’d just gotten back from work not too long ago and had been about to shower. glancing towards the door, you wonder who the hell could be bothering you at this hour—and when you’re so far out by the coast, too. at the corner of your eye, fake sebastian lounges across the couch in front of the television, and you notice his head turn towards you as you walk over to open the door.

it takes you a moment to process what you're seeing.

who you're seeing.

this sebastian is... taller. not by much, you don't think, but it's noticeable as your eyes flick up to freeze on his face with a sharp inhale.

same warm brown skin. same messy, black hair. same familiar blue eyes, albeit they are much brighter than you remember. or... or maybe you're remembering wrong. maybe they've always been like that.

he's missing the piercings on his eyebrow and his lower lip. there's a scarf wrapped loosely around his neck that hides something on his skin, though you can't quite make it out. a certain exhaustion lines the skin under his eyes. this sebastian is so blatantly older than the one who haunts you on the daily.

but what really gets you is the lack of a rough scar across the bridge of his nose.

he looks at you with lips pressed tightly together and the corners of his eyes pinched. his hands are tucked into a black, leather jacket, and he almost seems to hunch himself over to look down at you.

slowly, you turn your head to look over your shoulder. fake sebastian still lays across your couch. he watches you with a tilted head.

you turn back.

other sebastian's gaze flicks over your face, analyzing. a sort of achingly hopeful expression within bright, teal eyes. he opens his mouth. "he—"

you slam the door shut.

"what the fuck," you wheeze as you spin around and clutch at your chest. "what the fuck."

there's a silence beyond the walls of your cabin that does not lend itself in a positive way to your sanity. you swallow thickly. that— that couldn't be. that couldn't be—

"i think you should open that door," fake sebastian tells you quietly, interrupting your thoughts.

you ignore him in favor of breathing in deeply, then out. in, and out. you close your eyes and ground yourself in the here and now.

you are home. you are in your living room. your back is pressed against the wood of your front door. you can hear the faint roar of the ocean waves against the shore.

and there's a man outside your cottage who looks exactly like your dead husband.

there's another knock behind you—one that you can feel vibrate against your back. you open your eyes.

you are alone.

turning around, you slowly reopen the front door.

saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.

her enthusiastic "i'm a very nice and bubbly person, i swear! but i love writing angst and major character death :)" nearly took me the fuck out.
