“Screen time”: the magikbee perspective
Concerns over the effects of screen time on young brains are almost as old as screens themselves. Parents today will remember warnings of eyes going square or fears that development would be stunted by too many hours parked in front of the television. Indeed, some of those concerns were, and still are, justified: some studies suggest that too much screen time early on in a child’s development can slow down language learning and reading.
However, more recent studies underline a crucial point: not all screen time is created equal. In fact, researchers on both sides of the pond — at the LSE in the UK and from the American Academy of Pediatrics — point out that rather than arguing whether young kids should be exposed to screens at all, we should be considering the quality of time spent in front of smartphones, tablets, and televisions. Clearly, apps that teach spelling or maths can’t be lumped in the same basket as violent cartoons.
A further argument that has been gaining traction is that children need exposure to digital devices, as we live in a digital age; screens are part and parcel of day-to-day life in 2017. So should parents trade in activities of old — think tree climbing, kicking balls around, drawing pictures — for screen-based alternatives?
The answer is, of course, absolutely not. Those activities remain as important as ever. The key is balance, and choice; dividing time thoughtfully, and choosing digital activities that can contribute to a child’s development, rather than work against it.
At magikbee, it is our mission to provide screen time solutions that will not only be fun for the youngest kids, but will help educate them and prepare them for school. So, in summary: don’t get rid of the sandpit in the backyard, but make sure that when your little one is campaigning for some screen-based entertainment, you are providing them with the right outlet. kiddZtube — our new, teacher-curated video-quiz app for preschoolers — is a good place to start ;).
