your dream life is jealous of how much time you spend doomscrolling.

hey sweethearts!! mindy hereeeee, so i've realized something… like how we're all literally addicted to our phones?? and how our dream lives are sitting somewhere in the corner of our minds, pouting and wondering why we never hang out anymore??
i had this moment last week where i realized i'd spent THREE HOURS scrolling through videos of people organizing their fridges (which like… is satisfying but also?? what am i doing with my life). and then i had this thought that actually shook me: what if my future self could see how i'm spending my time right now? would she be proud or would she be like "girl… what are you DOING?"
the truth is that our phones are literally engineered to be more interesting than our real lives. they're designed by actual geniuses who understand our brain chemistry better than we do. it's not a fair fight!! and yet we blame ourselves for not having "enough willpower" which is honestly just mean??
✧ why we're all trapped in the doom-scroll cycle:
our phones deliver perfectly timed dopamine hits (the happy brain chemical!!) that make us feel momentarily good but leave us wanting more
the algorithm knows exactly what will keep us scrolling (it's literally studying us)
our brains are wired to seek novelty and our phones offer infinite novelty
real life has friction and requires effort; scrolling requires zero effort
we use our phones to escape uncomfortable emotions that actually need processing
the comparison trap makes us feel like we're "researching" our dream life rather than building it
i realized something that changed everything for me: the time i spend consuming other people's lives is time i'm not creating my own. and like… that's the whole game??
✧ how to break free (in ways that actually work):
identify your "scroll triggers" - for me it's when i feel anxious about my work, when i first wake up, and weirdly when i'm hungry?? once you know your triggers you can create little alternate pathways
create "phone-free zones" in your home - i have a little basket by my front door where my phone goes when i come home, and my bedroom is completely phone-free (i bought an actual alarm clock like it's 2005 and honestly?? life-changing)
practice the "dopamine pause" - when you feel the urge to reach for your phone, pause for 60 seconds. just sit with the discomfort. often the urge will pass, and if it doesn't, at least you're making a conscious choice
redesign your home screen to be boring af - delete all social apps from your home screen, make everything grayscale, turn off all notifications except calls/texts from actual humans who matter
schedule specific "input" and "output" times - block 30 minutes for consumption and 90 minutes for creation. your ratio should always favor creation over consumption
try "analog hour" before bed - read physical books, write with pen and paper, stare at the ceiling and let your mind wander (this is where all my best ideas come from tbh)
use the "future self" visualization - whenever you're about to fall into a scroll hole, close your eyes and visualize your future self. what would she want you to do with this precious hour of your life?
create ✧ focus-core ✧ routines - these are deeply satisfying rituals that give your brain the same dopamine hit as scrolling but actually build toward your dreams (for me it's making fancy coffee while listening to a specific playlist, then writing for 45 minutes)
practice "productive procrastination" - if you absolutely must avoid your main task, have a secondary important task ready (like if i don't want to write, i'll organize my study materials instead)
implement the "touch it once" rule - when you pick up your phone, have a specific purpose and do ONLY that thing, then put it down
the hardest truth i've had to accept is that there's no magic hack that makes this easy. creating a life that's more interesting than your phone requires actually building that life brick by brick, day by day. and the beginning is SO HARD because your brain is literally withdrawing from its favorite drug.
but i promise you something magical happens after about two weeks - you start to feel… different?? more present? more alive? and you realize that all along, the life you were searching for in your phone was waiting for you to look up.
your dream life is waiting for you to stop watching other people live theirs and start building your own. it's jealous of your phone, yes, but it's also patient. it knows that eventually, you'll come home to yourself.
xoxo, mindy 🤍
p.s. if you catch yourself scrolling after reading this, please don't feel bad!! just gently put your phone down, take a deep breath, and remember that you're breaking a literal addiction. be kind to yourself through the process, okay? tiny steps in the right direction are still steps. 💗

Most computers and phones can track this for you now, but if you can't find that data, answer with your best estimate.

Obey Me! Random Headcanon #8
The Brothers' Screentime
Lucifer
Average: 2 hours per day
Mostly for emails and texts; other work is usually on paper.
Occasionally spikes into 5 or 6 hours for R.A.D. projects or business trips.
Mammon
Average: 6 hours per day
We know he's probably gambling and playing mobile games (*coughs in the emoji game*), but he also spends a fair amount of time gambling in person when he's frustrated.
Spends up to 14 hours straight if he's waiting for a reply from MC.
Leviathan
Average: 19 hours per day
Obviously a gamer, anime watcher, otaku. You can't get a better candidate for ridiculous screentime.
Cuts down on electronic use when going to cons or when his family demands that he does.
Satan
Average: 4 hours per day
For reading, why else? I kid; he's obviously binging funny cat videos in between reading novels and textbooks.
Can spend more than 36 hours straight reading if he finds a series he can't put down.
Asmodeus
Average: 8 hours per day
For pure socials. He spends 8 hours per day updating his pictures and chattering with fans. Of course, this also supports his modeling gig.
Caps his screentime at 9 hours, since he usually hits the 8 hour mark around his bedtime. The last hour is exclusively reserved for MC.
Beelzebub
Average: 45 minutes per day
Mostly to text his brothers, but there are the occasional sports matches and food prep videos mixed in there.
Sometimes leaves his phone on while looking at recipes. He already knows how to make the food, so the phone just stays on without him looking at it.
Belphegor
Average: 20 minutes per day
Like his twin, mainly uses it to text his brothers. Unlike his twin, however, Belphie has spikes of activity rather than a constant stream.
His average shoots up to 2 hours if MC texts him first.
-- Caramel: Friendly reminder not to do what Levi does and get some sleep. It's good for you. --

andor spoilers for the latest set ahead!

how are we feeling about the s02e06 downer, folks? on a scale of "this was a thematically resonant and genre-appropriate death in a show about revolutionaries and spies dying when the people around them get sloppy; these three episodes are an obvious meditation on the benefits and drawbacks of Luthen keeping revolutionary lovers apart; literally everyone in this show except Mon is slated to die and we all knew that going in; three episodes ago a beloved straight white guy side character died and a formerly allied straight white guy got assassinated for being a liability to the rebellion" to "this is a straightforward instance of Bury Your Gays because a queer woman died which is Bad" to "however well done it was, I will probably always feel some kind of way about a queer brown girl dying on a Disney show that is overwhelmingly straight lightskinned people" all the way to "this is just fucking Tara from Buffy, they literally pulled a fucking Tara from Buffy on us, holy fuck"

sometimes i wonder if i actually have adhd or just too much screentime :/
Sent June 15, 2024
Too much screentime is a problem, and things like TikTok reinforce the short attention span aspect. However, I think that sometimes ADHDers end up addicted to screens because screentime just fits with how our brains work.
I for sure spend too much time in front of screens, but I do my best to do other things as well, and I have also tried to make sure that I can have screentime that is actually part of my work and my writing, or I pair it with something like making art, crocheting, or knitting.
Followers, what do you think about screentime and ADHD? Do you spend too much time in front of a screen, and why? Have you got any tried and true methods for cutting back?

ways to reduce phone time:
Starting this by saying that my screen time use is AWFUL. I spend upwards of 7 hours a day on my phone. This shouldn't continue for the school year because it is time I should be using for other things.
Set app limits- this method works for some people. I don't love it, because it's so easy to bypass, but my goal is to put up as many walls as possible for accessing my phone- even if they're paper.
Deleting distracting apps- this one works well for me. I hate logging into apps, and I don't like waiting to re-download them, so it is a great block for things like tiktok. I do want to post on tiktok and have fun with it, but I can't use it in a healthy way right now, so I'm putting it on hold.
Figure out why I'm on my phone and replace it with something similar but more productive- this one is pretty self explanatory. I spend most of my phone time reading fanfic, and I want that time to be spent doing something more productive, so if I always have a book on hand- one that's easier to get to than my phone, I will usually go for the book.
Make my phone hard to access- for me, this means putting it inside my backpack at the bottom of the front pocket. It is difficult to reach, and usually I just can't be bothered to get it out.
Obviously, these are pretty specialized towards me, but hopefully this is some level of helpful for others hoping to decrease their screentime.

Hii I just saw you post about how to reduce screen time and I don't know if it'll help you but are some things that seem to be working for me.
• Uninstall social media apps that you spend to much time in. You can still access them through the browser, but it takes more effort and it'll stop you from ramdomly opening them to scroll.
• I use the app forest, you set a timer for the amount of time you want to NOT use your phone and it starts planting a tree. If you enter another app during that time your tree dies :(( which for me works because I don't want the tree to die even if it's a virtual one. I use this maily when I'm in class or at night when I should be sleeping, rather than when I'm stidying, but it still works.
• Carry a book around. Sometimes you'll be able to make yourself read it instead of looking at social media.
The most important thing to me has been to change things gradually, if not it can be too much at the same time and I end up going back to old habits. Hope this helps :))
this is so useful 🙏 thank you very much. i'll leave it here for anyone who needs it.

Colin Bridgerton has about 20 minutes of screen time in both season 1 and 2 combined. His screen time in season 3 (his season) is a little over 1 hour.
Benedict Bridgerton has also 20 minutes of screen time in both season 1 and 2 combined. However, his screen time in season 3 (polin season) is about 25 minutes.
People like to claim Polin's shorter screen time in comparison with other seasons has to do with they having screen time (as a couple) in previous season. But polin's previous screen time is a little less than 20 minutes - wich is still about 5 minutes less thanBenedict's and the same as Francesca's in season 3.
While Daphmon got about 113 minutes and Kanthony 89 (in their season, with 12 more in S3), polin's screen time in S3 was 78 minutes.
