I’m so excited to finally get to share this with everyone. I hope this piece does justice to Natsume’s Book of Friends.
Writing this article was a really emotional process- I put a whole lot of myself into it, and while writing came to some powerful realizations of where I am right now and how I want to look at my life and move forward. It’s amazing how fiction can guide us and make us see truths like that.
Natsume is a show that’s really dear to my heart and I really wanted to do an article where I could capture why it resonates so powerfully. I wanted something accessible that gives people an idea why this show is special and worth checking out, more succinct than my billion word liveblog. I hope this article succeeded in that.
Our journeys of recovery are a part of our story just as vibrant and interesting as any other part. Please always remember that.

OMFG i’ve heard rumours AOT was heading a bad direction but never knew it was going to be so fucked up....
attack on titan is not worth caring about and i am deeply disturbed by its existence. not because of the vore. not because of the gore. but because i am caught up with the manga and know where it goes.
and here is my personal advice: if attack on titan is your big thing and you are not caught up on the manga, just…start looking at other series. try. you might not be completely crushed by the things that end up happening but
not worth it. it is not worth it to care deeply about or defend, there is not really any defending the horrible things it does…do not feel the need to defend it because you love it. please examine it critically if you are caught up and just accept that horrible awful terrible fucking decisions were made. i will not be a ball of anger at anyone who still is entertained but
do not defend it. there is no way to defend writing a story about shocking horrible violent vore for the sake of shock and horror and having it be about what it is
season 2 is coming out and if you watch it please…do not keep your hopes up for the rest of the series even if the season is well-made. i have no idea how far it will animate this time but i have reason to doubt that the entire manga will be animated or that it will be animated faithfully.
and i sure fucking hope it does not, or that at least it does and it gets enough backlash to open up conversation…

Hinata (talking about the girls who betrayed her who keep contacting her to try to apologize): Do you think I’d feel better if I forgave them?
Shirase: You want to forgive them?
Hinata: If it would make me feel better, I might. But when I imagine them looking all relieved afterwards, it gets under my skin.
Shirase: “Piss off”?
Hinata: Yeah. (voice cracking) I’m a pretty petty person, aren’t I?
Shirase: (moving forward suddenly to speak to the girls who keep contacting Hinata) Before we start, may I say one thing? I beg your pardon, but can you leave Miyake Hinata alone? You might think Hinata has been holding a grudge against you since she quit school. That she spends every day crying, thinking about what happened to her. But…but…
Kimari: But that’s not true! Hinata-chan is having an amazing, super fun time with us! She’s having a really fulfilling trip of the sort you can’t get where you are!
Shirase: Hinata is already looking forward! She’s already walking! She’s taking her steps with us! Unlike Hinata, I’m a real jerk, so I’ll say it outright. You can’t live your lives in this halfway state forever! You hurt someone and made them suffer! Now you have to live with that! That’s what you get for hurting someone! That’s what you get for hurting my friend! You think you can come crawling back now? Piss off!
A Place Further than the Universe is really excellent all around but this scene is really something special. I love Shirase so much, and I love how unapologetic and bold she is, I love how she sticks up for her friends, and I love how Hinata is supported, rather than shamed, for the fact she doesn’t feel like forgiving people who hurt her, for the fact she wants nothing more to do with them.
These girls were not respecting Hinata’s wishes. They continued trying to talk to her even after she didn’t respond to them, they tried to force a reconciliation when she just wanted to move on with her life. It’s clear they didn’t care about making HER feel better, but wanted to alleviate their own guilt. But they did something bad, and sometimes that can’t be fixed or glossed over. They just have to live with their guilt, because they earned it. They don’t get to MAKE Hinata let them off the hook. She has a right to her anger. It’s not petty.
You don’t get that message all that much, that you don’t have to forgive someone just because they apologize. If it helps you feel better and move forward, sure, but if it doesn’t? If it would be just something that helped the person who hurt you feel less guilty, if you don’t feel like forgiving them, if you just want to cut ties completely and move forward that way? That’s also fine. You don’t have to forgive wrongs done to you to heal and move forward! It’s not up to you to make them feel better about what they did. This scene hammers that in a really great way. And I just love the support and true friendship shown here.

It’s been soooo long since I came across a really cute but AWESOME anime! If you have ever felt the need to do something different for once in your life, you can start by watching this anime because trust me, it feels super relatable!!
Sora Yori Mo Tooi Basho (A Place Further Than The Universe) is one that depicts the beautiful journey of 4 high school girls going on an expedition to Antarctica and how they overcome challenges along the way. I really love the way this anime portrays friendship and how one should resolve/come to terms with a failed relationship. It is so emotionally realistic and each of the four main characters is absolutely lovable. I’m really glad to have not missed out this anime as its plot and visuals are one of the best I have ever seen.
Winter 2018 Anime Overview: A Place Further Than the Universe
Tumblr media
Mari “Kimari” Tamaki is worried she’s wasting her youth and wants to go on a big advenure. She meets a girl name Shirase who is mocked for her obsession with going to Antartica. It turns out Shirase wants to go there because her mother went missing while on a research trip there three years ago. She invites Mari along. With the odds stacked against them, the girls begin the long, difficult journey towards Antartica- and make a few new friends along the way.
It’s going to be hard to do justice to just how GOOD A Place Further than the Universe (or Sora Yorimo Toi Basho) is and put it into words, but I’m gonna try my best. Bear with me.
I’ve heard plenty of folks say this is the kind of anime you can reccomend to people who don’t watch anime to let them know how good it can be, and that is 100% true. It’s such a grounded and genuine series that treats its characters with respect and never takes the easy way out. Where a lot of shows rely on shortcuts and lazy archetypes, A Place Further than the Universe always treats characters as complex people.
Tumblr media
Take Shirase. At first blush, you might peg her as the typical stoic dark haired girl with a squishy center, but she proves to be so much more than that. She’s withdrawn, but also extremely blunt and expressive. She’s got a confident presence, but is easily embarrassed over certain things. She’s a skeptic who takes a while to trust, but once she makes friends she is fiercely loyal and ready to fight for them. She has a temper, but not in the typical over-the-top anime way- her anger is always warranted and treated seriously. She’s openly vindictive and spiteful. She takes satisfaction in proving people who hurt her or her friends wrong and rubbing it in their faces. She’s knows she can be a jerk and she’s proud to own it. She can also be silly and rush in without thinking- she’s not at all as mature as she first comes off.
She has a complicated relationship with her grief over her mother- she’s resentful, she’s lonely, she has a lot of questions, she wants to understand, she’s in denial about the unlikelihood of her mother being alive, she doesn’t know how to feel towards her mother’s friend…and that’s not even scratching the surface of the character. She has so many contradicting qualities yet they all feel organic to her, like they would to a real person. I love her.
Tumblr media
And she’s not the only great character. All of the main four are very distinct, with their own character arcs and unexpected qualities and motivations. Whether it’s Shirase dealing with her grief, Kimari’s struggle to break out of being dependent on her friend and the conflict that causes, Hinata coming to terms with the reason she dropped out of school or Yuzuki trying to make friends for the first time, they’re all interesting and emotional to watch in their own ways. They all come together beautifully for this coming of age story.
Tumblr media
On top of all that, the series has absolutely gorgeous animation. There’s beautiful scenery and direction, and the art style is just super pleasing. The solid, thick lines, the interesting colors, the beautiful eyes, the relatively realistic proportions- I just very much love all of it. Especially since all the girls actually look like high schoolers. And they act like them too- they’re adorbs, but they’re never cloyingly cutesy and they don’t have their rough edges sanded off. There were so many messy emotions in this show, so many real interactions- the girls really felt like friends who talked shit with each other, had trouble communicating, sometimes clashed but nevertheless had a strong connection.
It also obviously super awesome this series is about teenage girls going on a scientific expedition thanks to their determination and tenacity. But the series also has plenty of adult women in prominent roles too!

Slapstick in FMA and Arakawa's other work- a.k.a. "Arakawa's slapstick knows no gender, leave Winry alone"
So, I’ve been wanting to do this post for a while.
I’ve seen a few people complain about Winry beating on Ed and how it’s domestic abuse and such, and that Winry only gets away with it because she’s a girl.
It’s not, and it’s sort of bizarre and semi-offensive to say manga slapstick where everyone recovers immediately is real domestic abuse? Also I find it really sexist that Winry is always singled out when just about basically everyone perpetuates slapstick against Ed in FMA. And Ed does it against others, including girls.
On a broader level, slapstick in Arakawa’s work is not gendered in the least. Looking at FMA, Raiden-18 and Stray Dog, you see guys using slapstick violence against women as well.
But you don’t have to believe me. I’ve bought visual aids.
1.Serious violence vs. slapstick
First of all, let’s talk about how serious violence in Arakawa’s work is represented.
Arakawa is pretty amazingly consistent about showing the effects real injuries have. Sure, it’s shonen so everyone seems to bleed a lot and not die, but she actually acknowledges that blood loss makes people dizzy and weak during Ed’s fight in Lab 5. Whenever anyone fights a bad guy, their injuries just don’t go away quickly. Roy got stabbed in his fight with Lust, went to the hospital, checked out a little too early and so in the next fight his stitches popped open and he had to cut outta there. And Lust is a woman. So any idea that Arakawa doesn’t think women can *really hurt men*- have you seen the damage her women deal out to men in their serious fights? Did you read this manga?
People wrote in asking why Ed has a cut or bandage on his forehead so much, and Arakawa said he got his forehead sliced in the laboratory, and from then on kept getting in fights so soon after the cut had barely closed up it just kept getting reopened again.
In fact, there’s a scene after the laboratory incident in the manga that perfectly demonstrates the extreme difference Arakawa places between slapstick violence and her *real violence*. And also shows that men “abuse” Ed just as much as Winry does. Winry rushes into the hospital to find that apparently Major Armstrong has put Ed in a full body cast because he hugged him too hard or something.
