          Mello will be damned when she hears Matt repeat himself to her, louder and clearer. Not only that, but he’s pretty quick about it, too.

          If she’s honest, she kind of wants to deck him in the jaw. Why in the hell does he think he can just say that?

          “No. No, you aren’t. You’re drunk, and you’re sleep deprived. Go to bed, dumbass. Take advantage of your day off, because you won’t be getting another one anytime soon.”

          There’s a subtle bite in Mello’s tone, discernible even alongside the slight, ever-present mean-playfulness, that she’s certain Matt will be able to distinguish as irritation.

Matt laughs.  No, he doesn’t laugh, that’s not the right word.  He cackles, sounds the alarm like a hyena.  A hyena’s laugh is a warning, perhaps Matt’s is too.

“Tell yourself that, Mels.  Tell yourself that I’m drunk and sleep deprived and fucking ignore all the shit I’ve done for you when I’m like this.  I couldn’t possibly know my feelings when I’m like this, right?”

His grin doesn’t leave his face while he brushes off his legs and stands, stretching.  Matt’s back sounds like the percussion section of an orchestra.  “Sure.  Anyways, I guess I’ll go do what you say, while I’m on my day off.”  He waves over his shoulder as he turns to head to his bed.

Matt doesn’t think, that’s the overwhelming answer. Matt thinks of nothing, prefers to act to avoid the void of his thoughts constantly rushing at him. Matt doesn’t think. Instead, he drinks, he speaks, and he regrets. Another tally on a long list of mistakes. It’s no biggie. “Jus’ that I’m in love with you. Don’ worry ‘bout it…” Perhaps they’ll both forget about this by morning… He throws his drink back and savors the burn, embracing the heat.
