Philadelphia recently stepped into the harm reduction game with the first Safe space for use of illicit drugs in the US. A controversial method of harm reduction that many do not necessarily understand. But, if we shift our perspective on poor behavior choices to a poor coping mechanism for feeling shame, guilt, disappointment, and detachment, then these spaces make more sense. Rather than a trap house or back alley, people can use with trained medical professionals that care for them and can help. The hope is that with love and caring these people can begin to see a path out of the darkness and start working on a new life. Recently a client was asked to write an essay on #maitri and how it applies to her life. What she presented was an essay on the difference between #nice and #kind. She identified that nice comes with a level of plastic, superficiality, and fakeness. Kind on the other hand is #true, #genuine, and #real. She discovered being nice would cost her her #dignity, #self-respect, and #self-love. But kindness, it cost nothing. Kindness actually gave her more dignity, self-respect, and self-love. Happy Valentine’s Day to those that happily celebrate this day. Today’s message focuses on breakups because rather than focus on love many of us focus on the lack thereof on Valentine’s Day. Recently a client walked into my office and said “ever break up with a guy and think, I’m really glad that guy never got me pregnant.” Ironically just days prior she discussed how this guy was her soul mate and they had an amazing connection. Sometimes when we’re in the throws of the infatuation stage of relationships we don’t notice the signs and signals that would typically be red flags. Those lovely rose colored glasses, how evil they can be.
