A risky contrast. These words might describe exactly what I was planning to do for the test of Liza Pavlova. Test tells a story about the model. It is easy to cross the boundary upon which test turns into a clothing demonstration or a depiction of atmosphere. Me, Olga and Liza walked up along this edge intentionally (and carried Evgenia with us).

Evgenia Barkova — a fashion designer — makes garment with spirit. The tender pastel toned feathers seep through the holes burnt in tightly woven black fabric. You see the holes only when you are near. From afar, they appear to be a complex texture, like volume enveloped in air. Liza has spirit also, but its vector is opposite. “Liza, we can publish the result if the designer likes it” — “Let's go with what the designer likes”.

Gentleness of the slightly parted lips, the dreamy eyes, the careless bun and the large but supple hands are against the bright orange-blue flames. All are on a nondescript gray background lit softly. Liza holds a pivot.

The word Liza used when viewing the proofs for the first time: ‘Chickabiddy’ (‘Ptènchik’ in Russian). Newly born, driven to move by a powerful inner force, fed by eternal flames, protecting its essence, both powerful and gentle at the same time.

It is a little ‘ptenchik’ which discovers the world around it with interest, a compound of womanhood and childish simplicity.

The lighting is an important aspect of the effect. Olga Popova — a FAD student of British Higher School of Art and Design — created the lighting. We used frostframes instead of common softboxes to imitate complexity of natural lighting.

One person, one garment, one source of light, one background.

No retouching was made. It is another key feature of the series. When I contemplate a test, I prefer naturalness.

Образ для модельных тестов Лизы Павловой, которую представляет в Москве Modus Vivendis, создавался на рискованном контрасте. Модельные тесты — это история о модели. Легко перешагнуть грань, после которой тесты превращаются в демонстрацию одежды или атмосферы. По этой грани я, Оля и Лиза намеренно прошлись (Женю за собой увлекли).

У Евгении Барковой, дизайнера одежды, изделия с Характером. Нежные пёрышки пастельных тонов прорываются сквозь выжженные отверстия в плотной чёрной ткани. Прожиги видишь вблизи, издалека же — сложная фактура и воздушный обволакивающий объём. У Лизы тоже характер, только с противоположным вектором. “Лиза, если дизайнеру понравится результат, то мы сможем опубликовать эти фотографии” — “Сделаем, чтобы понравилось”.

Нежность приоткрытых пухлых губ, мечтательный взгляд, небрежно собранные в пучок светлые волосы и крупные, но податливые кисти рук, против ярких оранжево-голубых языков пламени. Всё это на неприметном сером фоне и в рассеянном свете. В руках у Лизы стержень.

Подхватив слово из уст Лизы, так и назвал эту серию: “Птенчик”. Недавно появившийся на свет и движимый внутренней силой, питающей бесконечные язычки пламени, крепко держит свою основу и, одновременно, не боится быть мягким и расслабленным.

Маленький “птенчик”, с интересом познающий мир вокруг себя. Сочетание женственности и детской наивности.

Важная составляющая эффекта — свет. Им занималась Оля Попова, студентка FAD БВШД. Мы использовали фрост-рамы вместо софтбоксов, чтобы имитировать сложность природного освещения.

Один человек, один элемент одежды, один источник света, один фон.

Ещё одна особенность этой съемки — отсутствие ретуши. Решая задачу тестов — показать возможности модели — я выбираю естественность и натуральность.

After a worthy product a well-organized team stays. Alongside good design and production, an eye-catching presentation of a product provides the cherry on the cake.

The task was as follows: what do you need in order to effectively present an authentic and extraordinary jewelry collection? If you were to answer the jewelries itself, its author, and a face for the collection, you would be right. A photographer, a hair stylist, a make-up artist, a retoucher will be also be necessary.

We performed the shoot of the WoodERN by Kate Tolstosheeva (under the brand KATE TOSH Jewelry) in the photo studio of Kate’s alma mater; British Higher School of Art & Design. BHSAD is one of the most influential institutes in Russia that provides higher education in arts and design.

A combination of Kate’s hard work and talent, alongside the rigorous mentoring of Igor Komov - the program leader of the Jewelry Design course in BHSAD - give birth to the unique jewelleries. They are made from palisander with the devices silver 925 sterling and gold gilt. Daniel Libeskind’s luminaire inspired the style and sophistication of the limited collection.

Extensive preparation before a shoot results in a higher quality level.

While Kate is visualizing the objects and giving orders to the jewelry production, I dive into the pre-production. My duties are to grasp the idea from the designer’s description, to write down a visual concept, to sketch a storyboard, to cast a proper model, to choose an ace hair stylist and a first-rate make-up artist, and to concertedly get a retoucher familiar with the task. Nowadays a commercial photographer should be able to manage lighting and angles as well as line producer’s and the art director’s duties, and to give a smartphone to model when a routine occurs.

It is an interesting subtask to assemble a team of bright minded personalities and streamline it working out the result: if your goals are stated clearly and precisely at the start of the process, then the quality level of the finished product will be higher.

I have previously enjoyed successful partnerships with the large modeling agency ‘ModusVivendiS'. It helped to choose the face. Kate confirms the choice, but it appears the model can not pose topless neither in lingerie. As these features were included in the pre-production concept, the search for a model had to start again. One more database of models; free or already booked; in Moscow or flown away; the aura of mature sexuality: not Beaujolais but Bordeaux.

Eventually, Evgenia Bazarova whom RFMODEL management represents, met all of the requirements, and Kate chose her immediately.

We found the HMUA quickly since ‘beautiful face’ + ‘cool idea’ + ‘willingness to do the task conscientiously’ is equal to ‘have a choice’. I met Tima Leo on the production for HENDERSON male fashion house and gave credence to his experience and mastery. Tima’s clients are state television companies, Conde Nast, Banana Republic, Casio and other industry leaders. During considering the HMUA task for the shoot, my point on the hair style differed to Tima’s. ‘Let your team tell you what to do. Not vice versa’ is the principle guiding me when I am in charge of production.

Dmitry Zhdanov was responsible for the post-production since he makes hi-end images for commercial photography with a huge amount of artistry and taste.

The day of a shoot is like landing an airliner with side wind and disabled engines. There is complete silence in the passenger cabin, but the cockpit becomes a hive of mad activity: heads continually turn 360 degrees, and the pilots are forced to grow an extra pair of hands.

I have to build the lighting, to add and to remove, to take up and to take down, to reflect and to absorb, to tell Evgenia what we are shooting (only kidding! I provided her with the visual concept in advance). To continue with greater enthusiasm after client’s ‘That’s it!’

Evgenia was near born for her role. Every movement she makes is worth a click. As the beautiful shots appear on the screen the sharp 'destructive' shapes of the jewelry contrast with the smooth curves of her body, and emphasize its feminine nature and fragility, make a gentle touch of pizzazz to the look.

A day after the shoot, Kate chooses the shots to pass to the post-production while I work on still-lifes with the jewelry. When everything is completed, the retoucher takes over. He prepares two variants; one is more colorful,and the other is more natural looking. The client eventually opts for the ‘more commercial’ look.

With the task completed, at the final presentation Kate was awarded an excellent mark!

Любой достойный внимания продукт — это огромная работа команды. И качественная подача готовых изделий не менее важная составляющая, чем само их создание и производство.

Итак, задача. Что нужно, чтобы презентация оригинальной и необычной коллекции ювелирного бренда прошла на отлично? Правильно — сами украшения, создавший их дизайнер, модель, которая их продемонстрирует. А еще фотограф, стилист, визажист, ретушер.

Съемка WoodERN — новой коллекции Кати Толстошеевой (бренд KATE TOSH Jewerly) — прошла в фотостудии Британской Высшей Школы Дизайна, одного из самых значимых высших учебных заведений в России в сферах искусств, дизайна и авангардных технологий.

Результатом таланта и труда Кати и опытного наставничества Игоря Комова, куратора курса "Ювелирный дизайн" в БВШД, стала уникальная коллекция ювелирных украшений из палисандра с фурнитурой из серебра 925 пробы и позолоты. Вдохновленная объектами современной архитектуры Даниэля Либескинда Катя создала стильную и изысканную коллекцию с ограниченной серией выпуска.

Уровень съемки напрямую зависит от проделанной подготовительной работы.

Пока Катя моделирует будущие украшения и раздает задания производству, у меня pre-production. Моя работа — сложить воедино всё, что показал и рассказал дизайнер, описать визуальную концепцию съемки, отрисовать раскадровки, выбрать подходящую модель, найти классных стилиста и визажиста, аккуратно поставить задачу перед ретушером. Современный коммерческий фотограф — это и свет, и ракурс, и линейное продюсирование, и навыки арт-дирекшена, и подать смартфон модели.

Собрать команду, где каждый — творческая яркая индивидуальность, и сработать в едином понимании поставленной задачи, достойная подзадача. И тем выше уровень результата, чем точнее обозначены цели, прозрачнее критерии отбора и методичнее выстроена профессиональная и личностная коммуникация.

Так, предыдущее мое успешное сотрудничество с Modus VivendiS, их обширная база определяет выбор модели. Катя утверждает кандидатуру, но в процессе выясняется, что модель не может сниматься ни обнаженной, ни в белье. А это выход из концепции. И снова поиски… Несколько баз, нужные варианты в зоне доступа, в Москве; зрелая сексуальность в образе: не Beaujolais, а Bordeaux.

В итоге, Женя Базарова — представляет её RF MODEL management — прекрасно подошла и была одобрена Катей сразу.

Визажиста и стилиста по прическам в одном лице мы нашли быстро: красивая модель + классная идея + желание сделать на совесть = выбор. С Тимой Лео я трудился на съемках для дома мужской моды Henderson и безоговорочно доверял его опыту и мастерству. Федеральное телевидение, Conde Nast, Banana Republic, Casio и другие лидеры своих индустрий — сфера сотрудничества Тимы. Мое видение прически было иное. Но в роли линейного продюсера у меня действует принцип: «Подбирай команду так, чтобы тебе говорили, что делать. А не наоборот».

На post-production я пригласил Дмитрия Жданова, ретушера, создающ��го изображения hi-end класса для коммерческих проектов, с чутьем и способностями художника.

Съемочный день как посадка авиалайнера в боковой ветер с неработающими двигателями. С пассажирского кресла выглядит “вжух и сели”, а в кабине пилотов — гормональный всплеск: головы крутятся на 360 градусов, временно вырастают вторые пары рук.

Выстроить свет. Добавить и убавить, поднять и опустить, отразить и поглотить. Рассказать Жене, что снимаем (шучу; она получила описание визуальной концепции заранее). С большим воодушевлением продолжить, услышав от заказчика: «Да-а, вот так!»

Женя словно родилась для своей роли — каждое движение стоит «щелчка». И вот уже на экране красивые фотографии. Резкие деконструктивные формы украшений контрастируют с плавными изгибами тела, подчеркивая женственность и хрупкость, добавляя изюминку всему образу.

Ещё через день, пока снимается та же коллекция в виде предметных композиций, Катя выбирает фотографии. Согласование. Дальше работа ретушера и координация. Из двух подготовленных им версий — насыщенной цветом и сбалансированной «натуральной» — заказчик останавливается на более ярком «коммерческом» варианте.

Катя защищает проект на «отлично»! Задача выполнена.
