Thank you so much!! I'm already at negative merits because I didn't turn in the assignment on time. The least they could have done was actually teach us this rather than assume we remembered it from real life.

Yes. YES. I do keep getting math problems. And no, they didn’t mention math in the introduction. You know what they did mention? Eternal consequences. The fragility of the soul. Death, trauma, et cetera. Nothing—nothing—about trigonometric ratios.

When I died and washed up on the ghost shore of the afterlife, I was told we’d be “exploring the self,” “reclaiming identity,” “finding meaning in death,” and “learning the ways of the Threshold.” At no point—and I mean nowhere in the orientation packet (which was damp, by the way)—did anyone say:

“Also, you’ll need to re-learn pre-calc, because death isn’t free and the Deans hate you.”

I asked Poppet about it once and she just said, “A balanced mind requires numerical discipline.” Then she took three merits for “emotional overreaction.” I wasn’t even yelling. Yet.

Now, regarding tangent ratios. I—listen. I didn’t know either. But then I lost a bet to August and had to “study sincerely for once” so here’s what I know:

The tangent of an angle in a right triangle is… deep breath… the ratio of the opposite side to the adjacent side. That’s it. That’s the whole thing. They could’ve just said: “Divide the one across from the angle by the one next to it.” But no. They had to call it tangent like we’re all born knowing Latin.

And then they hit you with stuff like: tan(θ) = opp/adj And then the spectral geometry quiz asks you to solve it while a shadow wisp thing breathes on your neck. Real cool. Real healthy.

I don’t even know what I’m learning this for. Is there going to be a pop quiz in the afterlife? Is the Threshold going to ask for my unit circle knowledge before letting me through?

I’m half convinced this whole thing is made up. There’s no math. There never was. This is psychological warfare. Spiritual Sudoku.
