November is National Native American Heritage Month
About National Native American Heritage Month: What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S., has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose. (https://nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/about/)
National Day of Mourning
The National Day of Mourning is an annual demonstration, held on the fourth Thursday in November, that aims to educate the public about Native Americans in the United States, notably the Wampanoag and other tribes of the Eastern United States; dispel myths surrounding the Thanksgiving story in the United States; and raise awareness toward historical and ongoing struggles facing Native American tribes. Learn more about the National Day of Mourning and its close ties to Massachusetts history at the GBH news story: https://www.wgbh.org/news/local-news/2020/11/26/for-native-americans-its-not-thanksgiving-its-a-national-day-of-mourning

MassBay Land Acknowledgement
Massachusetts Bay Community College wishes to acknowledge that the Wellesley, Framingham, Ashland campuses sit on land that was appropriated by the US Federal government from the Nipmuc, Massa-aschu-es-et (Massachusetts) and Pawtucket tribes. MassBay cannot change the past but what we can do is honor the land, the ancestors, and the indigenous traditions as we at MassBay use this sacred land as a communal place to nurture learners to move forward and make a more inclusive world.

2022 Election Day is TOMORROW, Tue, Nov 8

Election 2022: Vote on Tuesday, November 8
The following 2022 Election Voting information was provided by The Civic Engagement and Student Advocacy Club (CESA) and their advisor: Heidi Getchell-Bastien.
The midterm elections are coming up on November 8, 2022. Midterm elections happen two years into a president's term, and they don't get as much attention as the presidential elections that happen every four years. However, the midterms are extremely important.
Although neither of our senators are up for reelection this November, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs, including the 9 seats for Massachusetts. The party that gains control of Congress will decide important things like reproductive rights, climate change legislation, and voting rights, among other important topics. Many political observers believe this is one of the most important midterm elections that will ever happen this century.
Learn more about what will be on the 2022 ballot and learn about voting in the US in general, at our dedicated "Voting and Elections" Libguide:

Celebrate Banned Books
We celebrate and honor banned books every week at the MassBay Community College Library, but last week was officially Banned Books Week. That is, we are proud to carry titles that are often banned, challenged or censored at other institutions around the country and globe. And for the month of September we featured a Banned Books Libguide and Book Display at our library campuses.
MassBay does not ban books. In fact, we carry a comprehensive collection of children's books, fiction and non-fiction titles that have been banned and/or challenged around the country.

July Is Disability Pride Month
Disability Pride Month an important time to honor the diversity and uniqueness of each person in the disability community and celebrate people who have disabilities.
Disability Pride Flag
The Disability Pride Flag was created by Ann Magill, a disabled woman, and each of its elements symbolizes a different part of the disability community.
The Black Field: this field represents the disabled people who have lost their lives due not only to their illness, but also to negligence, suicide and eugenics.
The Colors: Each color on this flag represents a different aspect of disability or impairment.
Red: physical disabilities
Yellow: cognitive and intellectual disabilities
White: invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
Blue: mental illness
Green: sensory perception disabilities
See the Disability Pride Month Libguide for More Information
