Mastery Journal Post-production Thesis.
The fact that Post-production is relied on to bring the film to life is very important. After taking my Post-production class I realize there are so many stages and gates a film must pass through during the post-production process in order to better create a good picture and quality sound.
One of my biggest achievement was learning how to edit a movie with AVID media composer software. With this knowledge and skill, I believe I can take on any industry standard project and also create a good cut. I have also been exposed to industry standard coloring software like Davinci Resolve. The best quality every editor should have is being able to create a good story with what he has with pace and also maintaining the structural formation of the story. Editors are meant to create a suspension of disbelief in the mind of the viewer by the way he chooses his footage and assemble them. My instructor also made me understand the importance of reactions from actors during a cut.
Media requirement is also an important information every producer or director should bear in mind in order to have a better content format for distribution purpose and also to make sure you produce the right deliverable for the right media. I believe every filmmaker should pass through this class in order to better understand the art and also gain multiple experiences. As a director, learning the post-production process can give you foresight on the output of the project. As a cinematographer, you would understand where to place the audience’s concentration on the screen while blocking your shots. I believe this knowledge has made me very flexible in my profession. I also realized how important copyright products tracks are in our career and how to escape such a scandal. With this exposure, I would love to experience the real world protocol in major studio’s. Thanks, Professor.

Mastery Journal - Production: Thesis
Creating contents has always been a passion and my thesis production has guided me through all the faces of creating a movie from pre-production to production, and so far, it’s been a lovely experience learning from my ever-motivating instructors here at Full Sail University. My initial goal was to learn the process of creating a movie from the producer’s level to the P.A level, and also understand the equipment’s that are you used to shoot a standard Hollywood project. I achieved all these goals and much more, and I believe I can work on any standard movie set with the skills and set etiquette I have acquired from my thesis production class. I got the opportunity to learn from industry professionals like Larry Kats, who thought me on how to be a responsible PA on any movie set and also the positions usually assigned to them, and I believe this is the first knowledge any filmmaker must understand to gain set experience and also easy credit on major movies. A good PA is praised, but an outstanding PA is usually referred. Furthermore, I was the Director of Photography on our thesis project and I realized how much pre-production plans can help make life easier for me. As a beginner, I feel this was the best way to start my journey into the industry. I was able to understand the use of the light meter and also how to shoot with an industry standard camera like the Sony F65. With the guidance of my Instructor on set, I got to understand a few mistakes filmmakers make on set that usually results in a reshoot and also avoided these problems. Another basic skill I learned was fast problem solving on set to save time. Thesis Production classes have given me more purpose in my career and so did Pre-production classes, because without pre-production, there is no production, and I can proudly call myself a filmmaker today.

Mastery Journal. Thesis pre-prodcution
The Short film “The Black hole” as directed by Phil Sampson and Olly Williams.
After a photocopy error at work, a sleep-deprived office worker explores limitless possibilities.
The theme of this Dark comedy can be described as greed and invisibility, and the film has a dark tone that allows the audience to sympathize with the hero through his journey. The inciting incident of this story came at the early stage where the only character spotted a print error from the photocopy machine which created a black hole and dropped the error sheet on the side. Losing his drink in the black hole is the first plot of the story that drags the attention of the audience into curiosity as well as the character. This curiosity led the character to explore the possibilities of this mysterious error by testing it on a vending machine which is the second plot point. With a series of comical expressions yet seriousness, the character expresses his emotions in a way that carries the audience along. He further experiments this gift on his boss’s office where the safe is located and this is the midpoint of the story. Greed catches up with him as he finally locks himself up in the safe with the help of this mysterious hole, thereby leaving behind his ultimate treasure where he just came from, outside the box. This includes the climax and denouement of the story. Curiosity kills the cat. The setting of the film is a stereotype office setting and the set almost looks like it was built on a sound stage. With good use of perspective and angles the director successfully created a suspension of belief that puts the audience in a late-night office situation. Lighting and set designing also helped to create this impression. The costume also played a special role in the film by portraying stress and tiredness from a modern office worker. Showing he has a proper outfit that looks undone in several ways. His shirt looks untucked his tie knot is a little loose and his shirt is also rolled up to show he has been working hard most of the night. The set dressing had props in the right corners of the room like the printer which was properly placed in front of the camera and the vending machine placed in a lonely corner creating a good Arial perspective. The exhibition of computers in the room also shows that he is isn’t happy working at the office while his colleagues are at home. This helps tell the story. Hair/makeup was on point, The character had a rough hair which shows he had been thinking and also depicts stress and his face was a little oily which also show stress. The Cinematography of this movie was very straight to the point, the director had used a very dull and dark lighting style leaving the lightest part of the picture on the actor’s face. This Dull lighting also depicts a very moody character. He also made use of a lot of medium close-ups to give the audience a closer look at the characters stressful outfit and lots of close-ups on the actor’s facial expression to put the audience in the mind of the character. The film also started with a lot of insert shots from a close perspective during the photocopy to show pace and brevity. The final shot was my favorite, it was a dolly pull out showing the safe and money in the lonely office. This wide shot helped to show that our Hero is now finally in a lonely place. Diegetic sounds were the majority in this film, the film started with the sound of printing and also has a quiet office ambiance. In this film, a special detail was given to every sound around the character and it was also specially mixed, especially when the character was knocking behind the safe. The knock sounded like it could be heard from a padded metal container. The black hole also had a sound effect that can be heard by the character, thereby making it a diegetic and non-diegetic sound. The movie had no dialogue. Editing was very pacey and had started from the photocopy machine to close up of the character and to other aspects of the environment, thereby giving the audience a sense of the location and environment. There was also a good use of eye line which helped the editor transit to the next shot and this was best used from the greedy look of the character from the vending machine to the office where the safe is located. With the help of pace between shots, the editor helped to establish great suspense at the final climax of the movie and finally ends the movie with a slow dolly-out shot.
I had chosen the film blackhole for my analysis because I believe it is related to the thriller project I’m working on, Websight. The major styles I hope to emulate from this short film is the camera angle and the use of eyelines to transit to the next shot. Since my character will also be making use of a similar prop, which is a laptop, I hope to establish some good shots in relation to the laptop and the character, thereby showing the audience how strong my character is connected to the laptop. Though my lighting is a little different and has more warmth, I hope to make my character lighter in the frame to single him out especially when he is alone. The set which would be a library and is also bright background would have less lighting because of the walls, unlike this short film which has dark walls. I hope to achieve a lot of tracking shots with the help of a dolly and also make use of the vector lines I spotted at the library to create a cool perspective to frame my characters. Shallow depth of feel and deep space framing would also be utilized creating a foreground, middle ground, and background in every shot. The use of both diegetic and Non-diegetic sounds will be utilized because of the presence of dialogue and multiple characters, and special attention would be focused on the computer sound effects and jump scares. Finally, editing would be very pacey during the suspense aspect of the story and also proper use of insert shots to show details around my character that would help tell the story. I will also focus on how I can make a good montage cutting along with the sound score. I believe analyzing this film has helped prepare me for my project and I am even more confident now that I would produce a great film.

My mastery Journal VST
My initial goal when preparing for Visual Story Telling classes was to understand the technical operations in camera operations and also Blocking, but now I have realized there are more to apply when creating a good image especially when making a film.    I understand every picture must tell a story and it could also be ambiguous. The way a picture is lit and its perspective also help direct the audience action towards where the artist wants. I had a good amount of hands-on experience with lights and also studied several types of light, the way to use and also how to use them in a movie set, a photo section or event.    As the Cinematographer of our Thesis project, this class inspired me so much taking away doubts of handling this position. I believe after my experience on set I would be strong enough to be the Director of Photography in future projects.    I also got the chance to watch the team that shot the movie “Save The Date” this month as the role of grip and I prayed close attention to the cinematographer and learned a lot. I helped position lights and its placements.    Photo recreation has helped me understand a huge concept in lighting. Creating a subject exactly how it’s to look like without the help of any editing software has made me see movies in a different direction. Now I understand how films are lit and how to create a mood with the help of lighting.    The use of perspective in a picture when taking a shot, whether interior or exterior also creates an object direction and feeling. I have also operated the thesis camera made by Sony and felt the feeling of how good our thesis movie will turn out, especially after post-production.    As an editor, I love pictures and love to play with footages and sounds when editing movies, but bad images sometimes affect my skills, so I had decided to do it myself and create great images that can be played with during post-production. This is one of the reasons why I love handling the camera and I am also interested in how the lighting in the picture affects the story.    Editing has given me a good amount of experience in the movie industry in Nigeria and I have had the chance to edit great movies, but still, some of these pictures were not strong enough to tell a good story, if not for the help of good post-production. So, learning the art of creating a good image has given me the ability to work on any project and create something good.    I also hope with this lovely experience I would continue to familiarize myself with future equipment’s as they upgrade. The urge to know what’s new in the lens industry, Camera industry, and lighting world, so as the movie industry upgrade, I will upgrade as well. My instructor has given me a better way to watch movies as a filmmaker and learn so much more from every aspect of the movie.

The Black Hole (UK, 2008), A simple and funny short film directed by Phil Sampson and Olly Williams, still makes me laugh every time I watch it. The writer told a story that can happen to anyone because like Oliver twist we all want more. The premise of this short film is simply about “ a late night office worker, that Discover’s a black hole on a paper”.  The theme of this story is definitely “greed”, because his curiosity led him into discovering something unique, but his greed got him consumed by this discovery.
The genre of this short should be “Dramedy” or “Dramatic Comedy”, because its got this dramatic feel at the start and even after the funniest part, Drama ends the short. The tone of the short film also has this dark feel to it, more like Bluish Dark dramatic feel.
Inciting incident – The only Character discovers a black whole on a sheet on paper from the printer.
Plot 1 and 2 - He finds out it’s not just any black hole or error, but some special error.
Midpoint – He tests the power of the black hole on something minor.
Climax – He uses the black hole to rob his Boss by accessing the safe in his boss’s office and gets trapped by this greed.
Resolution? well that’s where it ends. The story left and Open ending for viewer to fantasize about.
The Production Design of the set was very detailed. Its either the production was held in an actual office location or a built set. I feel it was a location because of the boss’s office. But what matters most is that everything was in place from the safe to the vending machine. The costume also fits for some average office man and it was also rough like he has been in the office all day and is also working late. The set designer also played with few colors like blue and red which simply depicts office style. The Props was Good, just that I’m wandering her someone can fit into a black hole on an A4 paper. The safe made more sense.
The Cinematography of this short Film is very Creative, the Director got his blocking pretty well leaving enough space around the character to create a depth of field. It also looks like he used a prime lens to achieve this. The lighting was mild and pronounced to create an evening feel. The characters face was also well lit. So, the cinematographer deserves thumbs up because its evening, but I can spot every object in every scene.
Obviously, there was a track and dolly shot especially at the beginning of the film to properly introduce the character and a lot of tripod shots and no handheld. The reason for this, I feel is to show how calm the scenario is. Handhelds and unsteady shots sometimes means “someone is watching”. But obviously the character is the only person in the film. The director also obeys the rule of third in this short.
The short also has no dialogue and I must praise the writer for such a well-constructed story, because it’s not easy to capture an audience with a non-dialogue film. This short has about twenty-two million views too. There was no music, just folly and sound effects every time he sticks his hand into the blackhole. The Folly was also properly mixed and matches every action. There was also a room ambience behind every sound that let lets the audience feel he really was in an office environment even if they were listening to just the audio alone.
Editing, Superb and precise. The cuts were very pacey and understandable. The grading also matches the mood and location and also the actual film timing. The colorist played with blue and green to show its actually evening in the film and also depict boredom. No continuity problems I spotted, no jump cuts, just quick transition without dissolves, there was also no montages in this film.
In my Zero-low resource film, I would like to apply the directors style of blocking, creating a depth of field for my character and also make use of smooth camera movements with the help of track or a Ronin. I would also like to apply a pacey style of cutting in order not to bore my audience. Sound is very key, and because I have dialogue on my script, I want to make sure I get a clear audio recorded and also make sure I get good ambience to add to it. The color tone would be a mix of warm for day and blue for night. Warm because it’s a Dramatic film. Folly is another aspect I want to pay proper concentration to bring my film project “Snooze” by Marina Capretti Vecchito life.
