Mastery Journal Entry #1

My name is Ricardo Derose. My friends and family call me Ricky, thereon came my stage name “ Ricky Derose.” I have an Associate Degree in Communication & Technology, a Professional Degree in Recording Arts & Sound Engineering, a Bachelor in Music Production and I am currently getting my master’s in Film Production at Full Sail University.

                       By the time I was 3 years old, it was clear that singing was my passion. I would sing to my mom with closed eyes in an intense and engaging performance. The songs I would perform, were love songs. Of course back then, I did not know anything about the love of a boyfriend for a girlfriend or husband for a wife, but everything that was pure and beautiful represented the love that my mom gave me and the love I feel for my mom.

The beauty of the words in these songs drove me into writing poetry. So at 5 years old I wrote my first poem, dedicated to my mom and few years later on, I have turned that poem into a song. As the years went on, my lyrics have gotten stronger and it did not take me long to be on stage and perform. In elementary and high school, I was this guy who use to rhyme about everything and anything. My Journey as a recording engineer started when I was about 9 years old and had my first recording studio, which was a double deck radio, with a cd player that I used to play back the instrumentals from all the releases back then that would include the instrumental of the hit songs at the end of the albums. A mic hooked to the front, rehearse my rhyme, and structure my flow. I would use tapes to record my hook while the instrumental is being played on the cd player, then insert a second cassette tape to layer my vocal with the previous tape I have recorded my first hook and on a third tape I would record my verses while the second tape with my layered hook and instrument is playing on deck one.

As early as 3 years old I have discovered my passion for music, at 5 I wrote my first poem and through poetry I became warmer of musical lyrics and now my entire life is revolved around songwriting, poetry, screenwriting and everything else that is part of creating visual and audio arts.

I have spend my childhood studying dictionaries, reading poetries and studying song structures as a result I was appointed by the Haitian government in 1995, to write and perform a song that would educate to young adults of the importance of participating in the elections by voting. I have made the first cut for the 53rd Grammy’s in 2010 with my song “Be A Humanitarian” in the category for Best R&B Recording by Group or Duo. I have won the Runner Up Awards for best songwriter of the year in 2011. I have articles written about my works in Soul Bounce Magazine, Habitat for Humanity News page, NY1 News, and have written songs that are performed by over 50 independent artists.

Coming from a Haitian Cultural Background studying music, as a major in college was not a subject that would debouch to a career. So, after High School, I went to college for an associate degree in communication and technology. Then I continued my education for a Bachelor in English and education. I wanted to be a history professor. My turning point occurred in my junior year at St John’s University, when I released my third EP album “Prevention, Intervention [H.I.V/Aids] that I realized that I can teach and educate people on a wider variety of subjects through music instead of just one subject as a historian professor.

I hope to learn everything there is to learn in making movies and music video for the next 12 months. My dream is to one day open up entertainment centers around the world, to help independent artists with musical subjects that have purposes to educate, heal and giving a voice to the oppressed ones. These entertainment centers will include some vegan restaurants, live venues, recording studios (audio & video). Later on I want to produce short movies or series about the Haitian’s history. I want to make movies based on the books of Zecharia Sitchin.
