baseball book recs
the long season, by jim brosnan sports memoir/diary of a single year (1959) of pitcher jim brosnan.
where nobody knows your name: life in the minor leagues of baseball by john feinstein a super raw and emotional book profiling a number of minor league players, minor league umpires, and minor league coaches at all different stages of their professional careers.
i should have quit this morning: adventures in minor league baseball by kathy diekroeger another profile of minor leaguers, but this one is comprised of long player quotes with small sections of author discussion in between. the author, a mother of two baseball players who interviewed their old teammates for the book, passed earlier this year, so buying this one will support the family.
a fan's guide to baseball analytics: why war, whip, woba, and other advanced sabermetrics are essential to understanding modern baseball by anthony castrovince this is a casual, lighthearted, and super comprehensive intro to baseball stats that doesn’t take itself too seriously. it’s a really good introduction to sabermetrics!
baseball scorekeeping: a practical guide to the rules by andres wirkmaa a dense, but accessible, reference guide to official scoring, how to score in different situations, and breakdowns of mlb rules. it’s a great start (and finish) for learning how to score more than just hits, strikeouts, and runs.
infinite baseball: notes from a philosopher at the ballpark by alva noe i can’t recommend this one enough. it’s a short read, but a deep one that muses on every aspect of baseball and puts into words why it’s so important to us and why we love it so much. this one fucked me up in all the best ways possible.
eight men out: the black sox and the 1919 world series by eliot asinof this is a super theatrical and visceral recounting of the whole black sox fiasco that breaks down the scheming beforehand as well as the actual plays that were thrown. the author also goes into the personal motivations of each player to cheat, and the reaction of the united states after the scandal broke.
the art of fielding by chad harbach a novel about college baseball drama at a small, fictional, liberal arts school. i dont wanna say anymore about it because it’s really good and i don’t wanna spoil anything. also, there is gayness.

being a true cubs fan doesn’t mean being from chicago or following the cubs before 2015. it means waiting until the off season to thirst for craig counsell
