The skies they were ashen and sober;
The leaves they were crispèd and sere—
The leaves they were withering and sere:

The Highest Mountain
On the trip back from Monteverde we came to what I think was the highest point in all our driving through the mountains, and what appears to be the highest point for as far as the eye can see.

Golden Orb Weaver Spider
These things are all over Costa Rica. They're not particularly menacing, but they are gigantic and they do make vast cities of three dimensional webs where MANY of them live together.

Sunset From a Mountaintop in Uvita
Josey and I decided to walk up to the top of the mountain that our house was on, so we could see the sunset. We had precious little time to make it back to the house before it got dark and that's when we got lost. By the way, mountains in Costa Rica are not well-lit after dark and it takes about 30 seconds for the spiders to drape webs across everything.

This Vexing Butterfly
This blue morpho butterfly has brilliant blue wings when it's flying. When it sees a camera, however, it stops flying and sits on a leaf until the camera goes away.

Volcán Arenal
I was pretty certain that Arenal Volcano was going to erupt upon my arrival, despite the repeated assurances of various Costa Ricans that it was "inactive." It didn't, and it also had a thick, heavy layer of clouds around it that wouldn't let go. I got as much distance as I could, and found that from the right vantage, an inactive volcano shrouded in clouds wasn't so disappointing after all.
