"That’s all of life. All we can hope for. You mustn’t think about the fact that it might end, because then you live like a coward, you never love too much or sing too loudly. You have to take it for granted, the artist thinks, the whole thing: sunrises and slow Sunday mornings and water balloons and another person’s breath against your neck. That’s the only courageous thing a person can do."

"But now she saw that it was just a bar, filled with people she didn’t know... It was never really hers, and it would carry on fine without her."

"Good writers borrow, great writers steal. —T. S. Eliot (but possibly stolen from Oscar Wilde)"
#this had a slow first half but the second half really got going#i did have the twist figured out but i enjoyed the ride nonetheless!#also had some hometown stuff in it for me which was an unexpected surprise#bookblr#the plot#february 2025

"... she doesn't see a landline, either. Only a brass button on the wall by the light switch, labeled Please press for immediate service. The sign strikes her as... prissy. Maybe it's the font or the little roses in the corners. The bell does not want to be pressed. They will not welcome her interruption. The please feels like a threat."
#this is... very bloody but it's fun if you like horror!#it's not a deep read but it's quick and easy and fun (sort of)#some reviews likened it to Kill Bill which tracks#bookblr#february 2025

"There are things in this universe that we cannot control, and then there are the things we can. . . . Let fate, coincidence, and accident conspire; human beings must act on reason."

"Adventurers and loners, romantics and desperadoes, eccentrics and slow suicides—the luxuriousness of the place, its seduction and savagery, calls to the wildest among us. Alaska, the land of black moons and midnight suns."
#an enjoyable but not seasonably appropriate read#very dark and very tragic. but fascinating#i feel like this book would have benefitted from more of the case records being available#which is the fault of the US government and not the author#december 2024

"The way she offered her hand. The way he accepted it and followed her, without a word. And of course they would feel this quiet closeness; they grew up in the same small town. Have overlapping friend and family circles. Went to the same schools. They know each other in a way none of us could ever know them."
#this is a little slow but i really enjoyed it#fairly predictable but an enjoyable ride nonetheless#bookblr#november 2024

"Sometimes, a perfect sandwich is not just about the sandwich itself, but about the setting. The experience of eating the sandwich. Context can elevate a great sandwich to a spiritual experience."
#unfortunately this was a miss for me#i really like cmq but this felt less like a book than a list of beautiful places people and desserts#i wound up being more interested in the side characters than the main ones and honestly was tired of them by the halfway mark#it's not a bad book but it's not really a great one either#november 2024
