My Little Fire
Chapter 10
First < Previous > Next
Azriel:
Rhys, Feyre and Amren had been at the Summer Court for a few days and had returned the previous night with the other half of The Book of Breathings, that was in Adriata. Cass and Mor had stayed to take care of the city and I helped them when I wasn’t at the human side of the wall. Cass had gone to visit my mate and her sisters this morning, so then I could sleep more, since I would return to work at nightfall. He had still to return and I had no doubt that my mate was involved in his sudden disappearance.
I laughed at the thought. Her, pushing him inside to answer a bunch of questions. A burst of jealousy erupted at my chest, inevitably, even knowing that my brother would never do anything of this kind, the bond affected me dearly. Even with her being human.
A few minutes later I heard the front door opening and Cassian’s footsteps. He came into the dining room where I was having breakfast and I observed him with an arched brow. He understood my silent question.
“I also didn’t want to be rude.” I smiled, knowing that my mate had offered something that he would never refuse.
“She made pancakes, didn’t she?”
“How do you know that? Have you been spying on us? Are you jealous brother?
I looked at him with anger. Cass still wanted to annoy me, even knowing that the bond had an effect on me.
“You smell like flour and your clothes and hair are white. I don’t have to spy on you to know things, I just need my eyes.
Cassian shook his shoulders and sat across from me. Some minutes later, Rhys and Mor came in and sat to eat with us. They both looked at Cassian and laughed.
“Did some kind of cake monster attack you on the way home, Cass?” Asked Mor between giggles.
Cass made an angry face, but didn’t answer, so I said: “It’s more like a pancake monster.”
“No, who made pancakes for you? Poor criatura, they don’t know where they got themselves.” Said Mor.
Cassian looked at me then, with a grin on his face. For him. Then, I understood why he was making that expression. My mate had cooked for him. Alright, not for him, for the both of them, and it wasn’t even that important, but still, it made me angry. Not at her, never at Aideen, especially because she didn’t know anything about the bond. But with Cassian, because he wanted to annoy me.
Cassian noticed that he was making me angry. He knew what I was thinking. And kept smiling.
But he wasn't a fool. As soon as he saw the shadows that were hovering above my shoulders, ready to attack if he said the wrong thing, he swallowed, knowing that I wouldn't hesitate.
I loved my brother, but I would punch him until he begged me to stop and apologized. With my shadows he and rage as fuel he wouldn't stand a chance.
Rhys, who knew what was happening, got in my mind. He caressed my shield with his claws and I opened a crack for him. He retreated a little when he felt the pure rage burning inside me.
Calm down, Az, he said in my mind, you know that Cass only wants to tease you.
How you'd you feel if it was Feyre?, I contested in a growl.
He was confused, he didn't know I had this piece of information. But he answered nonetheless.
If it was Feyre I would be mad, but I would not hurt Cassian for that, even if he deserved for irritating me.
I knew he was right, I shouldn't be this mad over some teasing. But the rage was still raw under my skin.
Calm down, he ordered. His tone, the High Lord's tone, made me a little better. Enough to stop the desire to to send my shadows across the table.
When I came back to my senses Cass noticed and his shoulders relieved some tension. Mor, thank the Gods, hadn't noticed the exchange between us and was still eating.
"It was one of Feyre's sisters. She offered as thanks, for bringing the letters she wrote." Said Cassian.
The letters, Aideen had written more than one.
Feyre entered at that moment and sat beside Rhys.
"What are you talking about?" She asked.
"Your sister, she asked me to bring a letter for you." Cass took two envelopes out of his pocket and handed one to her. "And… one for Az."
My eyes widened, just like the other's. I took the letter and instantly knew that Cass hadn't read it, since the wax was untouched.
"She said she had some questions and that you had agreed to answer. And since she didn't know if you'd be visiting the next time, she wrote this." Explained Cassian and the tension on my shoulders lightened.
Fayre didn't say anything, she just looked between my letter and hers. Until Mor butted in.
"Az's letter is thicker than Feyre's. I think we already know who is your sister's favorite Fae." She said, elbowing Feyre.
I had to find a way out of this without any suspicions.
"Aideen is just curious. I told her a little about our lands and, as it seems, I just made her want to know more. So I told her that I'd answer any question she had."
Then Feyre laughed and I almost fell from my chair from relief.
"It's really like her. She had always been curious. And, by the way, she fooled you Az. I'm sorry to say, but she'll never cease from asking tons of questions. You're in her hands now."
But, what she didn't know, was that Aideen already had me in her hands way before I accepted to end her curiosity. And she would always have.
-------------------------------------------------------------
I've spent the rest of the day searching something that might help me at work in Velari's library. I hadn't seen anyone after breakfast and was avoiding Cass, because, if I saw him, I might throw him in the Sidra.
That night I went in the human realm's direction once again. I spent the whole night searching for any kind of information. Until dawn. Until my stomach growled and my wings hurt.
But even in that situation I changed directions to pass in front of the mansion.
To see my mate.
I hovered above the house unseen, thanks to Rhys' magic.
But when I saw her, sitting by the window with her knees tucked in close to her chest, wearing a cobalt dress - the same color as my siphons - and with a book in her hands, I almost hit a tree.
She was so beautiful that I got distracted to this point.
I left before she saw me. Since Aideen and her sisters could see through Rhys' spell.
I arrived at Velaris and went straight to Rhys' house, to inform him about the investigation. Not successful at all, again.
After leaving, I went to the House and took a shower. Then I sat at the table in my room to read Aideen's letter.
I was delaying this moment as much as I could. I wanted my head clear to read it. And now was the best time. Before I went to sleep and had to go there without answers to questions I didn't know.
So I broke the seal and opened the letter.
Dear Shadowsinger,
I wrote this letter to ask you some questions. I hope you don't mind, but I didn't know if it would be you to visit next time. And, as you might have already noticed, when I'm curious I can't wait too long to find the answers. I didn't want to ask Cassian, even knowing that he wouldn't mind, I'm still afraid to be a nuisance. So I wrote to you, Azriel.
I'd like to ask especially about the traditions that one day we, humans, shared with your people and after the wall was built no more. I've already read a little about the matter, but every book that I find is either too old to be able to be read or in Fae's ancient languages. I wasn't successful at all in my research.
I also have another purpose in writing this letter. I dare say, and I hope you can agree with me, to a friend. I came here to ask how you have been and how things are in the Night Court. Since I don't know how much time we won't be able to see each other. Because that's what friends do, they care for each other. And I hope, in my heart, that you accept my friendship.
With love,
Aideen.
With love, friend, care. Those were the words that passed on a loop in my head when I finished reading. She wanted us to be friends. She wanted to be my friend. And that took my breath away. It got difficult to breathe and there was a knot in my throat.
I never had a lot of friends. They were the Inner Circle and nobody else. To know that she wanted to make part of this small world of mine warmed my heart.
I had to fight the instinct to go back flying to the mansion and kiss her senseless.
I wouldn't write an answer. I would see her in a few hours. So I went to sleep as fast as I could, to go find her as soon as I woke up.

My Little Fire
Chapter 9
First < Previous > Next
During the day after Azriel’s visit I spent the whole evening writing the letters I would ask Cassian to take with him. At least until Elain called me for dinner.
Nesta and I still hadn’t spoken since the previous day. After our fight. I almost didn’t see her at all, and if I had I might have tried to squeeze some sense inside her head. I didn’t want to argue again so soon. So I avoided her too.
I sat on her left side and Elain in front of me. Nesta took the head of the table, just like she had been doing since our father left. We didn’t look at each other, didn’t talk to each other, but when I saw her expression - distracted and light, different from her hard exterior - I knew she was thinking about what had been said the day before. And I hoped she would understand what was happening.
I went to my room after doing the dishes. I laid on my bed but didn’t sleep. Through hours and hours I let my thoughts travel. I let myself imagine what the Fae lands would be like. So similar to the fairytales I read about.
I thought especially about the Night Court, where I had a better description.
As soon as I fell asleep my dreams were about a shiny city, surrounded by high snow capped mountains. A river cutting its middle and the sea on the horizon. While I flew above it, side by side with the stars.
-————————————————————————
Waking up early in the morning I didn’t want to lose dawn. So I ran to the outer side of the manor still in my sleeping gown, and only a robe to protect me from the cold. I went to the furthest part of the garden, so then I wouldn’t be seen by anyone who could possibly be spying through the manor’s window.
I climbed up one of the trees to have a better view and waited.
Minutes went by and soon the firs bursts of light apeared, spreading and covering the land. It gave life to the dark sky and shooed the mist clinging to the air.
Then I turned around to see the night, still dark and cold, on the other side of the horizon. Their balance was mesmerizing. Night and day, moon and sun, cold and warm. It was peaceful.
I stayed there, sitting on a tree branch for a couple more minutes. Just feeling the sun warm
my skin until I could not bare the warmth any longer.
I climbed down back to the ground and cleaned the barbs that were stuck on my dress.
But then I heard something behind me. Close. I clenched my fist tightly and spun around fast. Too fast. But not fast enough. The person held my fist and, when the blur on my vision eased and the adrenaline flowing in my blood calmed down, I saw who was standing in front of me.
Cassian.
He grinned, noticing the movement I would have made, was it not for him.
“Good morning for you too, clever girl.”
“Cassian,” I said, “you scared me. I thought it was someone with bad intentions.”
“I pity the poor human being that ever tries to harm you. If you hit them with the strength that you were about to hit me with they could easily faint.”
I smiled at - what for me - was a compliment. He was a warrior after all, the leader of the Night Court’s tropes, as Feyre had told me.
“Thank you.”
“But your posture is not good. If you didn’t blank them out your ribs would be exposed for a punch that would leave you breathless, and you wouldn’t be able to react. You’ve got the strength, but you’re missing the tattics. Who teached you how to fight?”
I didn’t know if I should say this. Fighting was a secret that I kept from everyone, no one knew. And I liked it that way. But I trusted Cassian, even if we had only met a few days ago.
“I learned alone.” His eyebrows knitted together and lifted almos above his hairline. I wanted to laugh at his face, but I held it so I could explain. “I was afraid of the men from the village, so I decided to stop fearing something I didn’t need to be afraid of. I started going to the forest every morning to punch trees,” it was kind of ridiculous now that I was speaking it out loud. “I would protect my fists with a piece of old cloth and release all the tension and anger in each punch. I got as strong as I could, since I didn’t have enough food to get the energy from. I used to get the techniques from a book or two. But gratefully I never had to use these abilities, especially when you’re saying I’m doing it wrong.”
When I finished Cassian had a look that I knew well on his face. Pity and comprehension. But also determination.
“I’ll teach you. If you want, I mean.”
I looked at him gaping. A fighter wanted to teach me, not only that but a warlord, a powerful one, if the seven siphons were any indication.
“Cassian, I - I don’t even know what to say. Yes, I’d love it! Thank you so much. How can I thank you?”
“Take me down, one day, on the ring, and I’ll know it wasn’t in vain. It will be more than enough as a thank you.”
I smiled broadly to the gentle male in front of me. Nesta didn’t see this, that’s why she hated the idea of him.
“When can we start?” He smiled noticing my excitement.
“I’m training your sister everyday. But with you, it will have to be different. I can’t come here all the time, going through the wall is dangerous when done frequently. So we’ll have lessons once a week, maybe two if I come in Az’s place more times. In the morning, right before dawn.” I smiled, because he remembered that I liked to see the sunrise. “And I also want you to practice by yourself, understood?”
“Understood.” He smiled.
“Well, now that we’ve got the lessons settled, I came here on a mission. Did the queens send news?”
“No, not yet.”
Cassian snorted. He was frustrated with the answer. But he went on.
“And what about your sisters.”
“We’re good.” I said looking at my feet. We really were good, but not between us.
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
“Nesta and I, we argued. She still doesn't trust Feyre, even after everything that happened.”
Cassian froze, his face blank, leme he was suppressing something. Then I saw his browns knitting and knew he was angry.
“You sister have the ability to make me angry instantly, she really can.” He grunted.
I almost laughed. Knowing that my sister, who barely reached his shoulders, could make him this angry was comical.
“I’ll fix it. At least I was able to make her think about it.”
Cassian nodded.
“In that case I’ll take my leave then, I’ve got to give a lesson to your sister.”
“Don’t you want to come in and eat something? Azriel dined with us, it’s only fair that I offer the same to you.” Cassian laughed.
“Thank you little one, but I prefer to avoid your sister as much as I can.”
“My sister is still sleeping and I have flour to make pancakes. Are you sure that you don’t want to stay a little? Either way I’ll have to go inside to take the letters.”
“Letters? Which letters?” So Azriel hadn’t told him. He might have forgotten, he looked really tired two days before.
“Azriel told that if I wanted I could write letters to my sister and you would take them to her.”
“Oh, okay. So let’s get those letters and make some pancakes.” He grinned and I did too.
I took him to the kitchen and asked him to search for the ingredients from the recipe while I went upstairs to get the letters.
I went to my room and wrapped up the papers in different envelopes, sealed them up and signed.
When I got back downstairs I saw Cassian smiling shyly, with flour covering everything. The floor, his clothes and hair. Even the other side of the kitchen.
“Cassian! How-how did you make this?” I asked, suppressing my laughter.
“I… also don’t know?” He said more like a question.
I shook my head slowly. I sighed thinking about the mess I’d have to clean. I looked at him then and couldn’t hold it anymore. I laughed so hard that my stomach hurt. He was covered in flour and embarrassed.
I kept laughing for several minutes until his embarrassed left and he sent me an angry look. Which just made me laugh harder.
Thankfully my sister did not wake up with the noise.
I prepared the pancakes and we sat at the counter to eat. Cassian said that he didn’t care where we ate if he could put the pancakes in his stomach.
“You illyrians destroy my kitchen.”
“What did Az make?” He asked surprised. “He’s usually so under control. What did he make?” He would without a doubt talk about it with him.
“He almost burned the food while I was doing something else. Then he distracted me and I forgot about the food in the oven. Thankfully he remembered about it before it got burned. And lastly he got foam from the dishes all over my face and water on my dress.”
Cassian laughed with his cheeks full of pancake.
“You know, Az is a very good male. He knows how to cook, he’s gentle and loves kids. Did you know?”
“No… I didn’t.” I couldn’t understand what Cassian wanted with this. He was speaking strangely.
“And handsome, don’t you think?” He arched a brow.
“Yeah… I think that… you could say so.”
Cassian smiled satisfied.
“Any female that had him would be lucky, no?”
I grinned.
- Ah, já entendi Cassian, pode deixar, não vou chegar perto dele, e não contarei a ele também - “Ah, I get it Cassian. It’s okay, I won’t get close to him, and won’t tell him anything either.” Cassian looked at me confused. “That you’re in love with Azriel.”
Cassian choked with the pancakes and I laughed until my muscles were sore.
“I think you like to choke with my pancakes Cassian.” I said between giggles.
“Don’t cry when I make your muscles melt during the training.” I laughed even more at his threat.
We finished eating and I took the letters in my robe’s pocket to give to him.
I never cared about dressing up. I only wore dresses to please my sisters and don’t hear about it later.
Cassian watched the envelopes curiously.
“Two? Whose is the other one? I thought it was only for your sister.”
“Ah, this one is for Azriel. He said I could ask him some questions that he’d answer. So since I didn’t know if he was the one coming I wrote to him.” I smiled a bit shy.
“Sorry to say but he is the one coming next time. To tell the truth, he’ll come most of the time. I’ll be coming when he is tired and Rhys makes him sleep a little. Az have been having a hard time at work. He dedicates himself so much that sometimes he forgets to eat and sleep.”
My heart jumped to learn that Azriel would come more times. But it ached at hearing about his lack of care for himself.
Cassian noticed my mood and changed the subject.
“I’ll give him the letter anyway.” He put both of them away in his pocket. “I’ve got to go now, otherwise your sister will get used to waking up late. I’ll be back in a week for training, okay?”
“Okay. Thank you, Cassian.” I stood up and hugged him.
He seemed surprised at the act, but hugged me back after the shock had passed.
"You’re welcome. And thank you for the pancakes, even at this side of the wall they’re delicious.”
I laughed imagining how it would taste above the wall. I guided him outside and saw him depart with a gush of wind that blew my hair.

My Little Fire
Chapter 8
First < Previous > Next
I got back inside the mansion and went straight to my room, or at least I tried, because Nesta was waiting for me beside the stairs.
“What do you think you are doing?” She asked angrily.
“What are you talking about, Nesta?” I asked, faking innocence.
“You know pretty well what I’m talking about. I’m talking about you inviting that Fae to dine with us. They are dangerous, Aideen. They can act like normal people, but they aren’t.”
“Don’t talk like that about Azriel. He did nothing against you or any of us. Actually he was really polite, soothing you weren’t. So please, Nesta, don’t talk about something you know nothing about. You barely know him, you can’t judge him.”
“And you know?”
My blood was boiling inside my veins and I had to hold back my hand, avoiding slapping her face.
“No, I don’t know him. But Feyre does, and I trust her judgement. Otherwise she wouldn’t have sent him here.”
“Feyre is one of them now. I’m not sure I can trust her anymore, at least not yet.”
“She’s our sister, Nesta. You can’t be serious. She fed us for years, took care of us alone. How can you not trust her when it’s thanks to her that you’re still alive?”
I was almost screaming at her. She evaporated all of my patience, as always. I saw Elain with the corner of my eye when she entered the room.
“Nesta, please. Feyre asked for a restart, you said that you would accept, so at least try.” She begged sweetly.
Nesta, who was looking at Elain, turned to me again. I hadn’t even blinked. My face must have been as red as The blood that flowed underneath my skin, burning me from the inside, pure rage. Even after all this time, after Cassian’s words, after all she did for us, Nesta still didn’t trust Feyre. Fae or human, she was our sister. We should love her, because she would still love us.
Nesta didn’t say a word, as she turned her back to us, as straight as a tree, and climbed up the stairs to her room. I didn’t look away until she had disappeared from my sight. My jaw tense.
I saw Elain on my peripheral, coming closer. She put her hand on my shoulder, trying to calm my tempers.
I sighed loudly, tired. I gave her a look, trying to apologize for the mess I’ve made. She brushed it with a kind smile. I relaxed my tense shoulders and went to my room. All I wanted now was to spend some time alone, only with my own thoughts. That they could calm me down a little.
—————————————————————————
Azriel :
I have spent the whole flight back home thinking about Aideen. By the way she looked at me when I said that Cassian was the one coming for the next check up, I knew she was upset. And it only cheered me up more for my next visit. I would be going more times than my brother, since I had to do my work finding out what I could about the queens. He would be going only when I needed some time to rest and sleep, before continuing on my search for information.
I know I’m not good enough. She deserves only the best. Being so smart, prettier than anything I’ve ever seen and as sweet as a flower, she deserves someone better than me, someone that was not broken inside, or full of problems and scars, on the inside and outside. But I can’t keep myself away from her.
She must have a bunch of wooers on her door. And only thinking about it makes me sick, her in someone else’s arms.
I threw this thought to the back of my head before I went back there and took her to Velaris with me. I thought about her smile instead. It took my breath away just to remember. Her beautiful, dark brown eyes. I could lose myself in them for hours. Her silky wavy hair. Which smelled just like her. Her soft skin, that I got so close to touching with my lips I could feel her warmth.
She was perfect, in every way.
Her curiosity and intelligence. Everything in her attracted me. Even my shadows wanted to be with her. When away I felt like a part of me would always stay with her, keeping an eye on her, my shadows.
I was so caught up on my thoughts that I didn’t notice when Velaris came into sight. Almost passing the city.
Here above, seeing the shiny lights reflecting on the Sidra, I could only think about how I wanted Aideen in my arms. Flying over all this beauty that didn’t reach hers.
I arrived at Rhys’ state to find Cassian on the couch and Mor on the armchair in front of him. They took a good look at my body, searching for wounds. When they didn’t find any they smiled, relaxing.
“Welcome back, Az” said Mor sweetly.
After finding my mate I asked Rhys and Cass to keep the discovery a secret. They didn’t tell Mor, Amren and even Feyre. I didn’t want them to know, didn’t want their opinion and guesses. Just how I knew Rhys didn’t want them too about his mate. I had found out his bond with Aideen’s sister as soon as he brought her to Velaris. He had made everything to keep the city a secret for almost half a century, it wouldn’t be then that he would corrupt it.
When I stopped to demonstrate any kind of romantic feelings towards Mor, almost two weeks ago, she seemed to relax more when I was around.
“Welcome, brother. Where have you been? You were supposed to have arrived some hours ago. You left us waiting. They didn’t let me eat until they were sure you wouldn't be coming. Don’t tell me you were with the clever Archero.” Said Cassian. And all I wanted now was to punch his face until he bleeded for talking about Aideen in front of Mor.
She looked at him with curiosity and confusion in her eyes. Arching a brow. “Who?”
Cass' eyes became wide understanding his mistake. He looked at me and opened his mouth to answer, but I stopped him.
“Feyre’s sister. As it seems, she enjoys learning about different cultures and asked me about ours. That’s why I was late.” I said between clenched teeth looking straight at Cassian. He shrieked a little. He knew we would talk later. Or maybe use our swords.
“That’s so unfair.” Said Mor. And I looked at her confused. “You got to meet them while I had to stay here with Amren.”
Cass laughed at her complaining.
“Thank the mother you don’t know them, at least one of them I mean.” I knew he was talking about Nesta. It was true. The older sister wasn’t as gentle as the others. Even with Aideen’s temperament being unpredictable as I noticed.
Mor grimaced. “Well, now that Az is back, I’ll go to bed. Good night boys.”
We bid her good night. When her steps faded down the corridor upstairs I turned to Cassian and hit the back of his head.
“Hey! What was that for?” He exclaimed, massaging the back of his head.
“You know pretty well why I did this.” I murmured still afraid that someone would hear, even with my shadows keeping me informed.
“Yeah.” He said with his face scrunched. “Do tell now, you were with her, weren’t you?”
I let the silence reign while I thought if I should tell him.
“I was. She invited me for dinner and I didn’t want to be rude.” I ended saying.
“Okay, rude.” Said him with irony that I decided to ignore, only rolling my eyes at it. “Did you find anything about the queens though?” He asked. Changing the subject for my sake.
“No, nothing. I couldn’t even infiltrate my spies. Not even I could enter.” I sighed massaging my temples.
It irritated me more than anything. Not being able to do my job, be useful. It made me nervous.
Cassian moved closer and landed a hand on my shoulder.
“You will succeed, brother. But now you should sleep a little. Otherwise you will fall while flying.”
I followed his advice and went straight to the House of Wind. I got to my room and freed myself from all the leathers. And entered the tub to try and relax.
But as soon as I got in, and the hot water touched my skin, I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t Aideen. My mind swirled, passing through every memory, every piece of her.
Until that moment in the kitchen. When I got so close I could smell it when her scent changed. Became sweeter. With desire.
Her scent changed something inside me, so strong that I had to take a step back. And only to remember it now made every muscle in my body become rigid. And when I looked down, I knew I wouldn’t be sleeping too soon if I didn’t calm myself down. So I changed the water to cold and prayed to the gods it would be enough.
At least then I would be able to sleep without making something I would regret later.
