Lost and Found in Books
4 posts
McNaughtan's is a second-hand and antiquarian bookshop in central Edinburgh. We often find fascinating things tucked amongst the pages of books we price and catalogue. Old letters, dry bugs, photographs of children and loved ones, old receipts, tickets, shopping lists, funny notes - you name it! We love those moments and share them with you on this page.

This 1931 letter written in German was sent to Professor Stefan Jellinek, the founder of electropathology, from Dr. Manoilov in Leningrad. The letter accompanied the 1927 Russian translation of Jellinek’s work on electricity-related accidents, and was found inside the book. Professor Jellinek signed his name on the endpapers in both Latin and Cyrilic scripts. We think that Stefan Jellinek was based in Vienna at the time of the letter (he later moved to Oxford and eventually Edinburgh).

This letter was written to Stefan Jellinek, the first and only professor of electro-pathology, who carried out pioneering work on electrical accident prevention. The letter, written in 1956, was found in a 1955 book about Michael Faraday, the 19th century British scientist, a significant contributor to the study of electromagnetism and electrochemistry.
