See a pin and pick it up, All the day you'll have good luck; See a pin and let it lay, Bad luck you'll have all the day.
We found this corroding straight pin in the gutter of our 1616 Ben Jonson book, The Alchemist. The binding of the book is relatively new so the pin is not contemporary to the publication and since the green corrosion was rubbing off onto the paper we decided to remove (but keep) the pin. A journey down the internet rabbit hole of straight pin history informs me that the pin is probably a copper alloy lending to the light green corrosion. Before the 20th century pins were broadly used by men and women to secure clothes, hats, wigs, and paper items. They could be costly so were highly valued, leading people to save up their “pin money”.
I’m stumped about the age of this pin, if it was used in the binding process, fell out of a reader’s clothing, etc. Why would it be just laying in the gutter of this book, any ideas?

I find more recipes stuffed into vintage novels than I do vintage cookbooks. I just love that! It adds a whole other layer of storytelling to both books and cooks:) This recipe is for Boodle’s Orange Fool which is a trifle-like dessert that originated in England in the 1700s. I don’t who Lize is but I like to imagine that in 1974 she was the best boodle maker on the block:) . . . . #oldrecipes #paperephemera #boodle #typewritten #1970s #vintagerecipes #vintagebaking #foundpaper #foundinabook https://www.instagram.com/p/CHDsjZcAKX7/?igshid=mre27mg6rz93

Oh the strange things we find within the pages of secondhand books…. Here is a letter and a shocking newspaper clipping I found in this copy of Adventures in the Skin Trade that @drummingonthecover sent me. The article is from 1965 and is about how according to one doctor chastity would “remove the fears of mixed marriages resulting in children of mixed blood that are becoming an increasing problem."😱 😡 I can’t make out the word in quotes in the letter but I like to think it means something like "trash” and that it’s from a woman in an interracial relationship writing to her lover. . . . . . #bookstagram #bookworm #bibliophile #igreads #libri #instalibri #lettura #adventuresintheskintrade #dylanthomas #secondhandbooks #foundinabook

Dear Suzanne - I don't think that Judy was very good at following your instructions; I bought this at a used book sale. I'm looking forward to reading it, and hope to love it as much as you once did. Found in a book, this 1876 partial letter to “Aunt Mary” details a whale carcass viewing in Beer in southwest England. The letter states that the whale was found floating and brought to shore by fishermen, then “proprietors” fixed an “avenue of brown sails” around the whale so that only those who paid could get in to view. It goes on to say that “Thomas, the chandler in Exeter has purchased the carcass; so we shall have a chance of some real”....... unfortunately, the letter ends abruptly so we don’t know exactly what the writer was hoping to have a chance at. A chandler was a candle maker and household goods seller of oil, soap, and such items so I imagine the writer is referring to the chance of obtaining real whale oil products, maybe.
Found in: The anatomy of plants : with An idea of a philosophical history of plants; and Several other lectures read before the Royal Society (1682) / by Nehemiah Grew.

I just love it when you find an old recipe in an old book. This one - for 7Up Cake - was written on the back of a vintage Bi-Rite Grocery pamphlet. It was found amidst the pages of an early 1970’s edition of The Cosmo Girl’s Guide to The New Etiquette, which focuses primarily on the etiquette of all things love, sex and dating. Oh my, cake on a mission. Perhaps someone was being wooed;) 💕 - - - - - #paperephemera #oldrecipe #7upcake #birite #cosmomagazine #cosmopolitan #foundinabook #1970s #etiquette #handwrittenrecipes #foodwithlove #retroillustration https://www.instagram.com/p/B7TwKzTAuJg/?igshid=107yohxl3a768

When working with #rarebooks that have had a long life even before making their way to the library, you'll sometimes find traces of previous owners. Two types of small delicate flowers, pressed between the pages of this small pamphlet book, make our #FromTheVault copy unique. The book contains advertisements and a testimonial for E.T. Hazeltine's Piso's Cure, as well as stories for children. #foundinabook #books #librariesofinstagram (at Alden Library)
